I'm with D-Dog on that one.....I'll let the players do the talking the final 2 games and what is meant to be, will be  ;)

I did enough talking anyway for one day. Duhawk, from what I know of Joe Chalpaty, his love for UD is definitely not a "hatred" for Loras. He loved the way the people at UD treated his father, a man he deeply respected, and that UD gave him an opportunity. He had a great experience and made life long friends.

Isn't that what all of us want for our children? To be treated well, to be given a chance, and to enjoy the experience along the way. That pretty much sums up why I love UD too....

Is it just me or has the board slowed down the past week? I know Mondays are slow but we are getting close to 2400...we have to keep on pushing through the season and finish strong right?

I might also just being making pointless posts to get me closer to my 400th post  ;)

Central fans dissapointed they aren't heading into this weekends game against Wartburg as two undefeated and top 10 ranked teams.
I don't know about other Central fans, but I'm okay with Wartburg not being undefeated.   :D :D :D  I do wish the Dutch had a chance to rematch with UD again though.  That and the BV games were the worst I have seen Central play.  At least with UD I gave much of the credit to the Spartans making us look bad.  But after the BV game, I'm not so sure we didn't sink our own battleship that day.  Not saying we would have won, just that we didn't help our own cause.  I still think UD has a great team and only hope that they will slip up one more time.  Which is tricky, because if Central doesn't win out, I would prefer that UD does.  I'm still on the UD bandwagon, just hanging onto the edge until I see which Dutch team plays the last two games.

Okay, DF1 and I have new jobs that are not allowing us to monitor the board like we used to AND LOVED.  But it seems like Dutch and WB fans are definitely quieter this year, not even much being heard from Charlie and the other Coe fans.  When was the last time UD fans dominated this board???  There's something happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear... or something like that.   ;)

So COY and POY at this point and to this Dutch fan seem to be leaning towards Coach Z and his son.  I'm going with Michael Z over Hanus because it would be such a one time thing for the outstanding coach and player to be a father/son combo.  It shouldn't matter, but it would be pretty cool, much more so if it was a Central father/son, but anyway.   ;) ;) ;)  Either player would be extremely deserving, but given that MZ plays offense, defense, special teams, snack bar, announcer, parking lot attendant...  :D  I don't know if UD will win these awards, but given that Central, Coe and WB are all having a sub-par year for what they and there fans expect, I don't see it going anywhere else.  But if there was a best internet video school, it would be UD hands down.  I have said that on more than one occasion and IMHO, it is incredibly impressive.  I only wish the rest of us knew how to do it that well.  HINT, HINT!!!

Wish the Dutch were not having to play so many teams after their bye week.  I know there are good and bad things about a bye in terms of breaking momentum and normal patterns it is a bad thing, but watching at least 3 Dutch get injured against Cornell while WB had a chance to get some people with minor nagging injuries some rest, I give advantage WB.  Hoping none of the Central injuries were too serious, but I really haven't heard anything.

Hoping that the pattern of the visiting team winning continues for this one last year.  Sure would make the ride home a lot more fun.  I am worried about the Dutch, they will need some big scoring plays IMO because WB seems to have a real strong goal line stand.  I prefer to just avoid facing it and score from outside the redzone, even though you have to like a redzone as a Dutch fan.   ;)  Would love to see Kevin Sheldon surpass Viggers record this weekend for PATs attempted and made.  I hope the Dutch can keep the Knights big play offense off the field other than by them scoring.  I only saw them play UD and and the big plays were a killer for the Spartans.  That has to be a concern.  Sadly, one of Central's new big play players was injured and who knows if he will even travel this weekend.

Good luck Dutch!

I know you're mostly right Willie but I have actually have heard that some of the Chlapaty support of UD stems from his hate of Loras.  It must be really strong if that's the good sources. [/u] I wonder if there are any other colleges that are less than a mile apart that compete against each other in the same conference.  It has to be a pretty unique situation.

UD/Loras conflict is more than I had ever imagined.  St. Olaf and the Carls are another cross-town rivalry but I don't think it has the bitterness spoken about between UD/Loras.

St. Olaf, Concordia both have cross town games.  They seem to co-exist well enough.  Maybe that is "Minnesota Nice" as contrary to Iowa.............. .  ??

I've been awfully quiet on the postboard for much of the season. I don't believe in giving constant individual "props" to players.

But, in case anyone hasn't been following closely and if my math is correct, Michael Zweifel currently has 425 Receptions, 5581 Yards, and 50 TD's in his college career. The All-Time NCAA (All Divisions- D-I; D-IAA; D-II; D-III) Reception Record stands at 436.

I am sure Luther and Coe will do everything they can to stop him from achieving history but something tells me it's not a matter of "if" but "when".

If you can't follow your favorite team on Saturday, making a trip to Chalmer's Field on this Saturday wouldn't be a bad idea for the Spartans final regular season home game VS Luther. Otherwise, you can watch the action live http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/dbq.portal#

Your math is correct, check out our podcast from this morning or the front-page story with Zweifel in the headline.

I agree that the conversation seems a little slower than normal especially from Coe and Wart fans that usually roam the board.  I guess they don't know the feeling of following a pretty bad team.   I am looking forward to seeing the outcome of the Cent/Wart game, should be an entertaining one.

From the few times that I have met Joe and Linda Chlapaty I feel safe in saying they are donating money towards an institution they love and feel grateful that UD took in a kid who was the first in his family to go to college and he was able to take what he learned there and go on to a very successful life.  They also are big donors to Nationwide Childrens Hospital and to Lutheran Services as well as Marietta College.

I will say I am sure Joe Chlapaty saw even more than what I saw when I was at UD, that in general, we got along well with Loras people but it was the Dubuque locals that had an almost scary attitude to anything that wasn't Loras or catholic affiliated.  It now seems to only happen below the bluff, but you still see in Dubuque where locals will act like they have never even heard of UD and are confused about this supposed school you are telling them you attend.  I can't tell you how many times I would be in a store with friends of mine and a very friendly store owner would ask if we went to Loras and when we told him we went to UD they would suddenly frown and say they don't know anything about that and walk into the back room of the store.  We used to wonder if people were coached on it.  It would really freak us out.  I suppose we could have been over reacting.  And again, we almost always got along well with people that worked at Loras and other Loras students.  It just seemed to be old time Dubuque families and their attitude towards UD.  I wouldn't be surprised if Joe Chlapaty has mentioned something about that in the past, but Joe and his wife Linda would not be donating all this money just to stick it to someone.

As far as POY and COY...not even going there.  I would rather see UD make it to the post season and make some noise in the playoffs than achieve honors like POY or COY.  I am sure the team feels the same way.

It's probably more that the folks from Loras envy his giving more than anything.  It's interesting hearing about your experiences attending UD, I don't think that's the case anymore although Dubuque remains a really Catholic town.  I do think the rivalry is on the upswing in terms of intensity, it would be really interesting if both teams suddenly got good, that would be fun.

Well put, I couldn't agree more Willie.

One of the things I like about reading all the posts on here is the sense of loyalty that IIAC folk have to their schools ... the good natured ribbing that goes on ... the self-effacing spirit of others ... and the friendly rivalries that persist year after year.

For UD alums ... none of us from the Spartan Nation hate Loras ... it just makes for good fodder ... although I do remember back when the UD - Loras rivalry was finally renewed after along hiatus.  It was a b-ball game played at Dubuque Senior High and some Loras student was insistent in leading Duhawk fans in something resembling a "seig heil" cheer over and over and over ... tasteless!  How I wished he had been one of my students in Speech class that next Monday morning.

I have thanked Joe C. for his generousity to our alma mater and I know he bears no ill-will against Loras or anyone else.  He is one of those special people whose gratitude finds special expression ... just as many of the Spartan faithful do in proportion to their resources.  I have been UD blue-and-white for 49 years now ... and that will never change.  "Hail alma mater ... hail to thee."

GO SPARTANS!
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

Whoa, didn't mean to start a defend Chlapaty section, "hate" was probably too strong a word.  Again, I think the rivalry is good for both schools as long as it stays civil.

All the Loras/UD talk makes me think of other conference rivals.  Is the Wart/Luther rivalry still strong as it used to be?  I haven't heard much about it since the days of planes dropping flyers onto Wart's campus, etc.

The leaflet drop was the other way around.  Wartburg students flew over Luther.  One of my favorite pranks involved one of the little Warthogs. A group of Wartburg students posed as a church youth group from Minnesota and got game tickets, free food, and a tour of the Luther campus.  During the tour they posted little Wartburg stickers around campus and took pictures of the stickers and themselves without the tour guide catching on.  Another great prank was pulled off by the Wartburg student run radio station.  They got into the Luther homecoming parade by passing themselves off as some sort of socially conscientious group.  In the middle of the parade they "cut the cheese" ala Animal House and revealed themselves.  All the time they were transmitting live reports from the Luther parade back to the station at Wartburg.

That is hilarious! I could almost see Dean Wormer there.

UD/Loras...
Luther/Wartburg...
Coe/Cornell...
What was the bigger rivalry...Central/William Penn or Central/Simpson?
Did Upper Iowa have rivalries with Wartburg and Luther?  Anyone have any stories???
Does Buena Vista have any rivalries?

I did some looking around on the NAIA board to check in on the Iowa NAIA schools fan bases.  Curious to see how those fans would be on here if their school ever migrated over to D3 and the Iowa Conference.

Morningside fans seem knowledgable and level headed.

Northwestern, like Central, is a Reformed school.  Orange City, like Pella, has a tulip festival.  Northwestern fans, unlike Dutch fans, tend to be nut jobs.  If Northwestern goes 7-3, finishes 3rd in their conference, and doesn't make the playoffs they are outraged.  3 straight seasons with a 7-3 record and no playoff appearances and it's time to run the coach out of town.  Trash talk other teams...you betcha.  Central and Nortwestern fans that I have seen tend to be total opposites.

Briar Cliff, Dordt and Graceland fans...I haven't seen on there.

Grand View and Billie Penn fans...a lot like Morningside fans.  They know the game, follow their team, hope for the best and are level headed...there just aren't many of them.

St Ambrose fans can run both ways.  Most seem like they would fit in pretty nicely around here.  Some can be a bit...enthusiastic.

No, we don't know the feeling of following a pretty bad team.
