I wasn't overly concerned about today's game, but Wartburg's Knights better cinch up their jocks a couple notches next weekend.  I don't want the Spartans to win next Saturday, but I am glad to see them vacate the IIAC cellar.  Whether Dubuque will regain the glory of a quarter century ago remains to be seen.  For now they have taken a first step towards respectability.  The days of putting an automatic "W" on the schedule when you play Dubuque are gone and the IIAC is better for that.  Having a fulltime doormat doesn't do a conference any good.

As for the playoffs, with the AQ and a guaranteed share of the conference title, Central basically gets a week off.  For the Knights, the playoffs start next weekend.  One loss and you're out. Lets hope the Wartburg fans show up in force.

I think the Knights will get in if they get passed UD.  The only way they don't get in is if Bethel beats St Johns.  Then I think St Johns gets the pool C instead of Wartburg.

It's not limited to the West Region. Wartburg would be competing against conference runners-up nationwide.

I understand that Pat.  But a 9-1 team with its only loss to the conference champion in OT speaks pretty well for Wartburg.  I think that hurts Wartburgs chances if Bethel gets the AQ.  Puts ST Johns in the pool C.  I don't think many teams will beat out St Johns in the Pool C bids.  I guess that is what I am saying.  I think there is always a possibility of the West getting more teams in than 8.

If I am looking at the standings correctly, Dubuque can finish no lower than 4th in the conference.  You don't know how odd that looks to me.  I am very happy for them to finally have some success.

Congratulations Dutch. That was one heck of a football game today in Cedar Rapids and I'm glad to say the field conditions didn't seem to be a factor. It was good to see Ryan Coleman in town again as these two Iowa Conference powerhouses put on a show that I wish Keith McMillan could have witnessed.

Andy Tekippe saw his first action of the season and hit Jon Rife for a touchdown pass. Bobby Demoulin had another nice game also, connecting on 18 of 24 for 200 yards and three touchdowns.

Coe has now lost three consecutive home games by a combined 8 points. It really is a game of inches. A break here and there and the Kohawks would be making post season plans. Instead, we'll look to take a season's worth of frustration out on Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi.

Days like today, and actually several days this season, have made me thankful for this level of college football that we have all grown to know and love. Perusing the various message boards of our Regents institutions, there is a lot of grumbling out there. I like it because we don't call for our coach to be fired because we played for him and share laughs with the guy. We talk to them quite regularly, and they know our message board names. Not only the head coach, but all the assistants. Maybe it was our brothers, a son perhaps, or a nephew, but most likely us, that played for them, and if we called for their head, we'd probably get a personal call from them to joke around for a while, or at least an email from the Simpson SID ;D
Maybe the coach is an alumnus of our favorite school, or we'll see him and his family in church on Sunday, either way, you just wouldn;t do it.
We won't call out individual players for lack of effort of for making stupid plays. These guys aren't getting anything to play. They love the game. Some of us probably played with them, or our brothers or sons did or are. We tailgate with their parents and share a brew before the games. We watch them mature not only as football players from the time they step on campus, but as young men, and we actually know what their faces look like.
Yes, I'm very happy today to have a D3 school to call 'My Team'
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Thanks Walston Hoover for your well-chosen words. If I could give you 100 karma, I would. You said it all my friend.

Thanks for that Walston...I think you just inspired me to skip the Iowa game (damn them) next weekend to attend the historic Simpson vs. Central rivalry.

I know it's beginners luck, but I would just like to point out that I am the only one that went 4-0 this week in the picks...thank you Simpson and UD.

Saw part of the Simpson game and the offense finally got on track with a 100 yard rusher and the QB was on the mark most of the day.  Maybe an upset in the land of the wooden shoe next weekend??

Walston,

+1 Karma for you.   That is totally correct what you said.  With the excitement that was at Coe on Saturday it was great.  Where else can you go for a whole afternoon of entertainment for $6.  The kids really played their hearts out on both sides of the ball.  Yes you may wonder what the coaches are doing with some of the calls, but in the end you would never call them out and call for them to quit.  The coaches at this level are here to help our young men grow and to love the game.  Not make a million or two.

Any of the Kohawk faithful know how the two players are doing that left the game.  The linebacker with the knee and I think #22 with the shoulder.  #88 took a big shot too.  I hope they aren't hurt badly.

After playing Loras and now having played Coe I can not see how they scored 32 on you.  I know its two different games two different dates.

On the field at Coe,  I really think if you guys don't do anything with the field you should at least add more seating.  There was so much overflow.  All the seats were full and there was a huge crowd of SRO people on the track.

Yeah Show, I was in Dubuque yesterday, and you are right, Jermar is definately not deserving of all-conference QB.  Maybe if there was an award for dual-threat QB then he'd get it for sure.  Today, he was pretty good in the first half and obviously can wing the ball, pretty much has a cannon.  In the second half, however, he was extremely inaccurate, throwing at player's feet and throwing it out of bounds.  He never threw it blindly or anything, he usually took his time (no pass rush whatsoever again from the Beavers) and somtimes hit the open guy.  The Beavers again dropped at least 3 sure INT's so I'm sure he stats weren't that bad.  Spartans pretty much ran two plays all day.  QB choice and the option.  Little #4 for the Spartans did extremely well at RB and it seemed like he always got 4 yards.  Beavers often committed to #4, only to find that Jermar still had the ball-20 yards downfield.  Defense did not play very well against the run, but I thought they did really well against the pass.  One 40 yarder and a miraculous catch by Walner by the UD sidelines are the only big pass plays I can remember.  For the Beavers, once again Chris Hawkins was his indecisive self.  O-line did really really well in pass pro all day only giving up two sacks-one was a coverage sack and the other Hawk once again stepped into the pressure.  Little Row broke off a big 50 yarder and got some yards here and there, but once again we could not run the ball consistently.  Like I said, Hawk looked OK usually throwing on target.  Randy Kaufman had a big day, again and was consistently double-covered in the 2nd half.  UD's team speed is still what stands out to me.  Not many people can chase down Devin Stewart and Row and they did it, to both of them.  Their 'backers especially surprised me.  Prince Bussie, Chavis Youngblood and Orlando Walton are some special LB's.  Extremely fast for that position.  Overall, not a bad game by my Beavs, but UD just had too many athletes on this Saturday afternoon in Dubuque.

Seems like Jackson was able to make all the big plays for the Spartans today.  Someone earlier stated that he should be all-conference QB, but I think he's more of a RB that takes snaps.  Based on what I heard from the webcast today, he may struggle next year through the air without being able to throw it up for Belleus.

Wartburg may have their hands full next week...

Jackson wasn't the only player to have an impact for the spartans today or all year....the defense did come up with some big stops when they needed to, they also ran down your bro to prevent a long TD run. And on offense, give some credit to UD's other 100+ yard rusher Clayton. He has been a big reason our offense has been more successful because of having him as a running threat to compliment the passing game and jacksons scrambling ability. And lastly, belleus, although one of best all around athletes on the field and surely special, is NOT the only playmaker WR for the spartans, they have a few including #2 in the IIAC Edward McIntosh who will be back next year. A little more on Mr Jackson next post....
