After all the excitement of last week, this sad news arrives.  Once again athletic success is put in a less important perspective.

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A member of the Wartburg coaching staff has confirmed that former wrestler Aaron Wernimont has died.

Coach Eric Keller received a call around 10 a.m. Tuesday morning confirming that Wernimont died in Indiana. Keller says Wernimont woke up and was gasping for air. Wernimont's wife Kahri, also a former Wartburg athlete, called 911. He died on the way to the hospital.

During his time wrestling at Wartburg, Wernimont won two individual national titles and helped lead the team to two consecutive Division III NCAA titles.

Wernimont was from Pocahontas.

This is sad.  Condolences to his family and wife as well as all the Knight family.  Any word on cause of death?  Warthog what year was he at Wartburg.  Just wondering about his knowing my son or if he was older or younger.  I will pass this along to Matt.

Aaron Wernimont was a 2009 graduate. Wernimont was a two-time NCAA National Champion at 157 lbs. (2008, 2009) and placed sixth his sophomore year (2007).  He was a team member of the 2008 and 2009 NCAA National Championship teams for the Knights.

Michael Zweifel participated in the ISU pro day yesterday.

Zweifel stopped the watches in :04.56 in the 40 yard dash, peaked his vertical jump at 35 inches, leaped to a standing broad jump length of 9'-11", ran a :04.20 in the 20 yard shuttle and ran a :06.52 in the three cone drill. Zweifel's time in the three cone drill is the second fastest by a potential draft prospect this year.

Hey ... thanks for that.

How can he be 40 years old already!

Not much of an article.  It reads as though it were written by a 7th grader.  Nice job DMR.

The DMR has come a long way (down) from the days of the peach section.

If it's not about the Hawkeyes or Cyclones is doesn't exsist to the Register. I've heard parakeets won't even poop on it.
NKD: "We need a f**king touchdown, excuse my French"
FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."

The Gazette & D3 do however give some Kohawk love!  Nice little write-up on Freddy.  Must be ex-Coe Running Back appreciation month or something in Iowa.

The Gazette with Coe and Cornell and the Telegraph-Herald with Dubuque and Loras give us decent D3 coverage.  The Waterloo Courier, during football season...and a little less so during basketball and wrestling season give us decent coverage of Luther, Wartburg, and Upper Iowa.

Unfortunately, the Register has become horrible...which is a shame.

What I find interesting is that with the Gazette you will find more information about Luther than Wartburg.  I only find it interesting because Waverly is much closer to CR than Decorah.

During the 2008 football season I emailed the Gazette regarding their lack of coverage of Wartburg's playoff run and I included the number of players on the roster that were from the Cedar Rapids / Iowa City area which I believe was over 40 players.  I got the obligitory appology and we will do better next time response.  :-\

22 weeks from today IIAC teams kick-off their season.

GO SPARTANS!

What is most likely to happen...

A - IIAC stays at 8 teams for the forseeable future

B - IIAC adds a school/or schools from outside of Iowa (what schools would it/they be)

C - IIAC adds a school/or schools from inside of Iowa (what schools would it/they be)

D - More schools leave the IIAC bringing an end to our conference

Multiple posters on the NAIA board have mentioned the Graceland president wants to either stay NAIA and join the Mid-States footbll league which has Iowa schools Waldorf, Grand View, William Penn, and St Ambrose...or move to D3 and join the IIAC.

Hazbeen on this site mentioned Northwestern and Morningside are interested in D3 and the IIAC...not so sure about that.

Every now and then I hear Nebraska Wesleyan is interested.  They are NAIA for football, but D3 for every other sport.

Augustana???

Anything???   Bueller???  Bueller???

Pat Coleman

I doubt Augustana wants to leave the CCIW. I would love to see Nebraska Wesleyan get into the IIAC, for what it's worth.
