Hmm, ok, hazzben has correctly called me out for generalizing...something I have called out others on here in the past and then went and did myself.  Guilty plea entered by me.

I will say, those that post on the NAIA board lean towards the extreme.  Anyone remember that fake Central poster that was banned on this site?  That is pretty much your average Northwestern poster.  Not representative of their fan base as a whole, but representative of 99% of their messageboard posters.

Every time I go on that sad message board I'm reminded how good we have it here at d3boards.com. It has to be one of the most confusing, convoluted sites out there. Threads all over the place with no sense of unity.

And yes, I'm ready for some football as well!!

I think we can kill two birds with one stone by adding Grand View to the IIAC. Not only would that bring the conference back to nine teams, we could actually get some media coverage in the Des Moines area. The only thing that is more frustrating about the lack of IIAC coverage here in the center of the state is the overblown coverage Grand View gets. Even though they are a glorified junior college they are looked at as a mid major program around here because they offer "scholarships". They would be a bottom half team in the IIAC in every sport except basketball.

At my wife's side of the family easter dinner this weekend this came up.  Her cousins live in Des Moines and said Dubuque should go D2...like Grand View and offer scholarships ::)

I started with "Grand View isn't D2, they are NAIA"  That was met with confusion.  Then I told them that D3 schools with healthy endowments can often offer kids a better finantial aid package than your typical D2/NAIA school.  I then went on to tell them that in the NSIC they divide 24 scholarships up among 85 players so most kids aren't really getting much of a "scholarship" to play football.

They then asked again if I thought Dubuque might move up.  I replied that I think Dubuque is happy in the IIAC, so only if the conference moved up together...but I don't see that happening.  I like the D3 model.

Just another example of how D3 is misunderstood. I get tired of hearing of how one athlete or another is going to school on a (insert sport here) scholarship, when all they're getting is a minimal amount of money, probably not enough to cover books. But they're "on scholoarship" By God!

They should all go to Wartburg. They get everything paid for, or at least a roofing job in the summer. ;)

Have any of you ever heard of a semi pro football team called the Emmetsburg Celtics?  The Des Moines Register ran stories on this fictitious team.  Why because someone made up the results of the game and sent them in.

There was a student at Dubuque when I was there that would take stories the UD SID wrote and white-out the UD quarterbacks name and type his name in, and then send the story to his home town paper up in Wisconsin and they would run the stories.  After a few weeks of this, the paper called UD to ask if they could interview the coaching staff because they wanted to know what the Dubuque coaches were able to do to get a kid that didn't play high school football into a record setting college QB.  This was during the Roger Wailiea era of the late 80's.  This all made for some good comedy around campus after everything came to light.

Pardon the interruption- just wanted to say thanks for sharing that very funny story. Sounds like he might be the sort of guy w many other schemes that would be fun to hear about.

It is totally misunderstood.  These athletes get the financial aid whether they play or not.

"We have a great group of men on this team. We have students from the University of Dubuque, Loras College and Clarke (University). We have teachers and firemen, service workers and engineers. Rugby is a brilliant game, played by brilliant people."

I know coocoo recruits Coe and Cornell football players after they have finished their college careers for his Cedar Rapids Headhunters.  I guess these college students playing for the Gentlemen of Dubuque were high school football players that didn't go on to play in college and this is their way staying in sports (and gaining the attention of females).  Is there any sort of NCAA rule that would prohibit kids from playing a sport that isn't NCAA sanctioned during their off season?  I would also think a college football coach would have a heart attack if one of his kids were playing rugby during the off season worrying about injuries!!!

It is my understanding the authorities know who the person is. I guess it was a Luther student who did it on a dare & to get out of his class that evening (he didn't realize they wouldn't close Luther for a bomb scare @ the Wart). They identified him when the receptionist  offered "may I ask who is calling" & he responded with his name & the fact he was a student @ Luther.

I wonder if this will deter Wartburg from offering too many roofing jobs and free rent this summer  :o  :o  :o

I doubt that there's a rule against that. I played club hockey during baseball season. I know there were some soccer players that played club lacrosse.

Cali played football, rugby, AND hockey.  I'm now waiting for him to say those weren't quite enough of a challenge for him so he did a little MMA on the side, just to get a good work out  ;D

I hope not.  Little Warthog wants to have his place under roof by the time two-a-days start.

After the offending student was kicked out of school for his actions in Waverly, he was asked by the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier for a quote.

He replied..."Seven years of college down the drain"

Will Little Warthogs new place include a garage big enough to park the stripper bus you, NKD, and footballdaddy purchased last year ;)
