My daughter asked me to buy some pretzels for her.  I had thrown a bag of "Old Dutch" pretzels in the cart when I realized Dubuque plays Central this week.  The Old Dutch pretzels went back on the shelf and I bought a bag of Rold Gold pretzels instead.

As for this weekend in Pella.  I think both defenses will have a hard time stopping the other team, but I think Dubuque gets a few more stops of the Dutch offense than the Dutch defense can find answers for the Spartan offense.

For sure...especially considering the Dutch are down two defensive starters...hell down two dbacks

Picks
Wartburg 37 Simpson 31
I don't see the Storm scoring 31 this yr!

Oh I think theres more than a few people who think that well within the realm of possibility...I think most impartial opinions would say Wartburg scoring 37 would be a much bigger surprise than simpson scoring 31

I am one that believes that Simpson is going to have a very hard time putting up 37 points on Wartburg.  The current #10 team in the country put up 21 points on what is a good Wartburg Defense.

Simpson is one dimensional, their ground game has been nowhere to be seen so far.

Which Simpson game would you point to that would tell you they have an offensive juggernaut that will roll the Knights defense for 37 points?  :-\

Oh I don't think the storm will Put up those numbers or that their offense is that good. I just the knight offense is that bad and the storm puttin up 31 is more likely than the knight offense puttin up 37. To be honest I don't think either team will reach the 30s

Wartburg fans have Central fans that are talking about Simpson and Wartburg right where they want them???   ;D

I'm guessing my family will see a number of Wartmobiles heading towards Indianola tomorrow as we make our way to Pella.  Good luck to everyone...except the Dutch, I'm breaking out the ol' lucky lawnmower this afternoon after a few years of retirement.

I hope the offense plays as bad as they did against Carthage scoring less than 30 (27). A little bit of the recap:

Wartburg dominated the time-of-possession, 43:27 to 16:33.  The Knights rolled up 458 total offensive yards, 249 yards passing and 209 rushing, while Carthage had 208 total yards, just 18 of that on the ground and 190 in the air

"It wasn't much of game," admitted Carthage coach Tim Rucks.  "We got handled in every phase of the game.  Wartburg did what we thought they would do, but they came more ready to play than we did.  Their offensive line set the tone for the game.  They had a lot of long drives and just ate up the clock.  The two offensive lines were the story, how good theirs was and how little protection we offered our quarterback.

I'll take Simpson over Carthage anyday so not sure how this matters ???

Good luck to everyone this weekend and especially the Spartan Nation!!

Didnt realize Carthage was a such a power.  ???

why are wartburg fans so easily offended and feel the need to argue with people who don't agree with em? I honestly don't know jack about either team and I actually care even less. For all I know it could end 62-55....I was just giving an opinion. Take it or leave it, Im not losing sleep about the outcome either way

I took the afternoon off from work and brought the lucky mower out of retirement.  The ditches and front yard have been mowed.  Should that provide enough mojo to help the Spartans to a victory over the Dutch tomorrow?  Or should I finish up the back yard...and maybe the barnyard as well (the neighbors took their horses back last month and it could probably use a trim)  decisions, decisions...

And I thought this was a message board for such conversation??

Carthage isn't a power and again I ask you which Simpson win you were hanging your hat on that they were more likely to score 30+ on us then we were on them?

You can't have it both ways, if you didn't care you would not have commented in the first place right?  :P

No sir I think that more than did it...in fact, for sake of a somewhat competitive game, I urge u to go lay some fertilizer or sod or something to offset some of the damage you've done

Conference rankings...surprised to see the IIAC high water mark as 8th.  Is that the right call?  If it is...is it a result of the bottom or the conference being relatively weak?  I can think of some Dutch and Wartburg teams in the past 10 years that would be competitive with just about anybody in the country.  Coe has been tough too in the recent past.  In addition, there were some teams in conference that are not traditional contenders, that gave those teams a run for their money.  That leads me to believe we had to have had a conference that was stronger than 8th in the past.

Save the backyard in case we need some extra tomorrow.

GO SPARTANS!

Iiac is a weak football conference.  How many times in last 15 yrs has a team made it to final 8? And the bottom of the league is a complete joke.

I'm afraid the lucky mower may be more than enough if the Dutch QBs don't stop staring at where they are passing the ball from the second it is snapped.  Not to dish my gender, but if a woman can see where to go for a pick, the Dutch turnover margin is only going to get bigger and in the wrong direction.  As to the starting line-up, I hate to second guess a successful coach but I would not spend any more of the season getting game "experience" to a senior QB who is as good as the others, but not stepping it up.  Why not give the time to someone who can help in the future?  And Osborn was my choice for running back last year and that has not changed.  He is quick and can get some tough yards, but the hand offs have to be faster since they are anything but deceptive.

I have more confidence in the defense, though they are suffering some injury losses, but the offense has to give them a rest and cut down on the turnovers.

It is going to be a long season for the Dutch because we don't have a strong QB stepping up and taking over when things are going tough.  Snead was good, but I would give anything to have another Tim C. or at least have him coach the QBs on how to move your eyes around the field, you might actually see an open man if they tried it.

Welcome to Pella Doolittle.  I fear your trip back home may be a lot shorter in more ways than one than Central's last week.  It had to be a long one for the coaches knowing this may be the year they don't have a non-losing season.  I have faith in the coaches, but they have their work cut out for them this year.  We do have some real talented players, just not enough of them.
