Hey DBQ1965, be sure to schedule a trip to Dubuque for Homecoming 2014.  That is the Mu Sig 75th anniversary and the actives are already making plans for the activities.  It would be great to get some pre-1980 stories from you and others.

If you are making the trip this year, there will be a large group of us in town both Friday and Saturday nights.

Okay, the game is over and Central lost, but just have to get one more Simpson joke in before waiting another year.

I really have to give credit to Simpson for playing a special needs kid at the key position of QB.  Every time they came to the line the poor guy forgot what the play was.

Come on Simpson coaches, have some guts, make a call before you see how the defense lines up.

I'm gunna jump on it to and say that was stupid. I hate people that get over sensitive, and from the "offensive"  aspect, if you get offended by what someone says online...well you need to put things in perspective. HOWEVER, you just insinuated that central got beat by a team led by mentally challenged player, so in essence central can't even beat a team like that...doesn't bode well for the next 5 weeks

Also, central did the same type of play calling last season so don't be a hypocrite

As heart wrenching a scene as I've ever witnessed today at Coe when freshman QB Mark Atwater lay motionless on the turf after a clean, but wicked hit near the Loras sideline. Father and Coe defensive coordinator Larry left the coaching booth to be with his son while trainers and paramedics tended to him. Players on both sides knelt as the crowd stood silent. Brother Jordan, Coe's starting safety, emerged with a scared look on his face as their mom returned to the field. Mark suffered a concussion, but reportedly had feeling and movement in his extremities. But you couldn't see that from across the field. It wasn't until Larry returned to the booth that I knew everything was ok. Up 56-0 at the time, Coe certainly could have finished without him. But there was still time on the clock. And he's a Kohawk. And an Atwater.

Here's the Gazette account of the game:
http://thegazette.com/2012/10/06/atwater-injury-mars-huge-coe-victory-over-loras/

I saw the clip on KCRG last night and was uncomfortable watching the broadcast showing young Atwater being stabilized and loaded into the ambulance with his father looking on.  It's good to hear that he has feeling in his entire body and has good color.  My thoughts go out to Mark and his family.

Concussions take some time to recover from even though Mark may be up and walking around, studies show that a person's concentration and decision making are impaired for several weeks after the initial trauma.   The susceptibility to future concussions is also increased.  I know the trainers and coaching staff will do the right thing by keeping Mark out of competition for some time.

Would Mark be eligible for a medical redshirt if he sat out for the rest of the season?

Sincerely yours 5 Words or More

Pat Coleman

I don't believe he would be eligible for a medical redshirt. Once you get past game 4 in football, that's pretty much out the window.

Congrats to Simpson on the W this weekend.  The Dutch will struggle this year, but they are young, and I think things look bright for the future.  That said, something bothered me on Saturday that had nothing to do with the product on the field.  I feel as though the team deserves a better game day experience than what the college is putting on.  First of all, I was shocked to see so many empty seats for a Central / Simpson matchup (especially with Iowa idle, and ISU out of town).  I can remember seeing that place packed, and most of the hillsides full for these games, but Saturday was a joke.  Not much student support, and the fans that were there sat on there hands for most of the game.  There just isn't any excitement whatsoever.  The "pep band," if you want to call it that, is woefully inept.  Frankly, they should be ashamed of themselves...Central needs to ditch that tradition and move to canned music over the PA system.  Pella Middle School could send over some students that would do a better job...and I am 100% serious about that.  Honestly, just some simple changes could really enhance the excitement level.  I believe that a better game day experience could actually enhance the product on the field as well.

Are there any plans to improve the stadium at Central?  We saw plans for improving the soccer facility there, but noticed the football stadium looked very dated.  Gravel walkways on both the home and visitor sides.  The home side has a main stand that is small and metal roll away bleachers on each side of it.  The home side faces into the sun which seemed odd.  The Central campus looked fantastic, but to us, the football facility looked more like a high school field.  It was ok, it just seemed like a school with 30 conference titles, a national title along with multiple Stagg Bowl appearances should have a better looking place for their football team to play in.  We were told by some in-the-know that getting Dutch locals to open the wallet for sports facilities can be a hard sell, like they wouldn't want to be seen as showing off with a gleaming new stadium.  Maybe that plays into the game day atmosphere these days.

Will things change at central now that there isn't a football guy as the ad. Heard they have a wrestling coach as ad. Wrestling never good at central either.

Not quite true.  Mid 80s to mid 90's the Dutch were IIAC wrestling champions on a few occasions.  In fact I think they were the last team to have a championship before Wartburg's current 20 year run of titles.

I just heard they got a former wrestling coach to be ad. Did they get the guy from mid 80s?  If so ignore my last post. Wrestling bad during my 6 yrs of following iiac.

I remember when my son was visiting Wartburg during his high school days and it was when Central was in town about 6 years ago.  Central traveled very well then as I remember many Central fans trying to fit in the home stands because the visitors side was full.

Last year when Central was in town there was still room on the visitors side.  :-\

I know it wasn't your intent here Klompen, but for everyone who knows and loves a real special needs kid, that is a pretty hurtful joke.  :-[ I realize that's probably not at all how you meant by it, but it can still pick at a wound for certain people.

Well put.

I was at the last two home games for Central - I would agree with all that you said here
