St. Johns comes to Central next week. Should be an epic of a game with an electric  atomsphere at Schipper Stadium!! Last time the Johnnies visited in 2000 during the 3rd round they pulled off the squeaker 21-18. Lets hope for an equally exciting game this weekend only with a slightly different outcome :) I expect a defensive battle...the Dutch haven't given up many points at home this year!

Dutch..is Central's field grass or turf?  How about seating capacity?

DutchHawk

Its the newest edition of FieldTurf. Very nice, I got to play on it during the alumni game this year. Seating capacity is listed around 5000 or so I think, the visitors stands are bigger than any other in the Iowa Conference, but there is plenty of room to sit and stand around the field because its in a bowl with the grass around the end zones. Parking to the North and South of the stadium.

DutchHawk-

What do we need to know about the 2006 version of the Dutch? I remember in previous play-off games, there was a lot of smashmouth style football from your squad. Always well coached & ready to play.

2006 version of the Johnnies- Defense is solid (except yesterday) Offense is up & down. They can score at will some games and other games struggle inside the Red Zone. There is no "big horse" running back but there are multiple looks from the offense. If they figure out what went wrong yesterday it could be a battle, if not the Dutch win going away.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

The 06 version is very physical in all aspects, especially defensively. Great defensive speed, 2 track all-americans in the secondary and the other corner is just as fast. Our defenses seem real similar...statistically anyways. Offensively our workhorse is Schuring in the backfield, great vision, shifty, quick, and will run linebackers over, ask the Coe fans on that one...there were some collisions. Oline has been steady, wide recievers are talented and the passing game has really come along as of late.

DutchHawk is right.  Schuring is fast and he never gets tackled falling backwards.  To his credit he is a load.  With the first hit he will still fall forward and get some positive yards.  The passing game has improved this year.  Central finished #2 in passing efficiency.  The QB has really limited his picks this year as opposed to last year.  The recievers have some speed and have good hands.  I think the offense can be really balanced.  The defense is fast.  Linebackers flow to the ball and will come to hit you.  The d backs can cover well and have done very well with the picks this year.  I think they finished with +19 in turnover margin.  So they can cause some trouble.

The geek in me is coming out.  Here is a link to the IIAC page of a football helmet website.  http://www.nationalchamps.net/Helmet_Project/  They have current and historical pictures of team helmets of everything from the pros down to div. III  They are asking for pictures of helmets that anybody has that they do not currently have.

The passing game yesterday was stellar. Moving Connell around and letting him use his athleticism to throw the ball 10 to 20 yards down field seems to be a strength. Schuring will pound it and make you miss while the receivers have some great talent and speed. I cant wait and its only Sunday!

Johnnie fans...what about Kofoed and the offense, Ive heard his name before and know they can throw the ball this year. Also how would you say the MIAC compares top to bottom to last year?

DF1,

Were you there? Did you think that about the FG attempt.  Sorry about your losing the pickems you should have stuck to your guns.

Yeah, darn it, letting a Wartburg man beat me. :)

I think Simpson was grasping at straws...ugly.

Bring on the Johnnies! SJU took Central out of the playoffs in '99 and '00 -- I think we are ready to repay the favor..... Go Dutch!!!!!!!!

Willie U, I graduated in '92...although if I had been on track I would have finished in '90...I let fun get in the way for a few years.  Taking over paying for college is what got me on the right track.  I never played football, was just a fan of the team and the school.  I was an aviation mgmnt major and now am a real estate appraiser.  I knew they brought back nursing and I thought they also brought back some teaching majors, but I havn't followed the turn around all that closely.  My roomate from freshman year was on the committee that made the call to scale down what was offered over closing the school and was part of the process of bringing the school back from the brink.  He told me some interesting stories when he was up for our wedding back in 2000.

Even if Dubuque doesn't have an upper division finish next year in football or if the basketball teams don't finish in the upper half, at least they are making investments in the programs and the school as a whole.  That is what I am proud to see.

Doolittledog, we may have had a little fun together during one of your years  ::)
Willie U

Well in my time in Dubuque (when I wasn't busy studying ;D)  I could be found at the Dog House quite often.  I ate a lot of wings at the Ground Round.  The Shot Tower down town.  And late at night we often headed over to Mr. Hydes in E. Dubuque along with the other establishments you found on the east side of the river.  Often followed by Mulgrews chilidogs to wrap up a night.  We also spent a lot of time out at Swiss Valley park playing volleyball and just hanging out.  And we played a lot of golf at Lacoma, Timberline, and I forget the course right in the middle of town...kind of near Clarke College.

Were you ever to be found in any of those places???

Johnnie Red

Dutch fans, can we still tailgate in the lot close to the stadium where everyone was tailgating in 2000 when the Johnnies came to town?

Any hotels you can recommend in Pella? Any establishments that serve adult beverages in Pella that you would recommend? ;)

Hotel accomodations include:
The Amerihost Inn and Suites - 800-434-5800
Comfort Inn and Suites - 641-621-1421
Holiday Inn Express - 641-628-4853
Royal Amsterdam Hotel - 877-954-8400
Strawtown B&B - 641-621-9500

Now, JR, I know what a "heavy" drinker you are, so we'll try to accomodate the refined tastes you have.... I think most establishments in town sell wine coolers, so I think you should be OK. Bring your own red cups. :)

GO DUTCH!

Congrats on a HUGE win!! and great season!! 3rd place finish in the IIAC isn't too shabby.

I hate to rain on your parade, Willie U, but Dubuque finished in fourth place. Coe takes third by virtue of its head-to-head victory. Still, a nice turnaround for the Spartans. We'll see if they can keep it going minus Belleus.

Sorry Charlie, the standings will show 3rd place and Coe and Dubuque tied. Coe beat UD but UD beat wartburg which coe could not. Coe is listed ahead of UD because of their 1 more non conference win. IF UD were to have 1 more non conference win then coe, then UD would be listed ahead of coe regardless of whether coe beat UD or not. It's the same as if both wartburg and central both had 1 loss, they would SHARE the IIAC title no matter how you slice it. So, deal with it, UD finished in 3rd place in the IIAC tied with Coe.

Willie U

Sorry Willie, but the first tiebreaker, should a tie be broken, is head to head between the two teams.  With that being said, both teams will be listed as having tied for 3rd for this season, but Coe would own the tiebreaker.  No where does it say that you would have the tiebreaker because you beat Wartburg.

DutchFan2004

DustySJU,

I am sure that your coach will have your team ready as will Coach Mac.  I don't think there will be anything easy about Saturday from either side of the ball.

One note to you SJU fans.  If you want Hamms you better bring it with you.  I don't think that can be bought in Iowa.  I am just guessing but I haven't seen a place of business carry the sky brewed water down here forever.
