We often talk on here about D1 transfers down to the D3 level.  Yesterday, there were two D3 transfers from UD that suited up for Big Ten teams.

In 2011 Tim Clary was a 3rd team TE playing behind Miles Hookstead and Tyler Dobratz.  He had 6 receptions for 28 yards and 2 TD's that year.  Yesterday, for Illinois he had 1 reception for 33 yards in the Illini victory over SIU.  He also had 5 receptions for 51 yards and a TD in the Illini spring game.

In 2011 Kevin MacCudden was a back up FB playing behind Brock Haas.  He had 1 reception for 2 yards and a TD on offence, and on special teams he had 8 solo tackles, 9 assisted tackles and 47 return yards.  He is now listed as 3rd team FB and expected to get special teams duty for the Badgers.

Someone needs to tell the kid from Luther you need to lock elbows when going for a rep record. But still, very impressive. I've always admired guys w/ that kind of strength AND muscle endurance.

Anyone know if Coach MacMartin is going to be on KNIA/KRLS on Monday nights like he was last year?

Dubuque preview up from the Telegraph-Herald.

http://www.thonline.com/sports/local_sports/article_2c18459c-1ece-50bf-8459-3a2b906ffd28.html?mode=story

From the article...

Zweifel announced last week senior transfer Brian Bradshaw, who started 11 games at Winona State, will start the opener. The Spartans don't expect to miss a beat.

"He's got great bloodlines," Zweifel said. "His dad was a starting quarterback at Northwestern, and he grew up as a football gym rat. He's intelligent as any quarterback I've ever coached. On the third day of camp he was audiblizing out of things that quarterbacks who have been with me for three seasons don't see. In that regard he's light years ahead."

That answers the "who will replace Wyatt Hanus question.  Dubuque also has another D2 transfer QB with starting experience in Zach Fry.

On defense, for the 2nd straight year, the Spartans have a D1 transfer at safety.  Unlike last year, this one will be eligible to play.  From the article...

The secondary is bolstered by University of Tennessee transfer Darren Myles, who will start at safety.

"He's what a guy from Tennessee should look like," Zweifel said. "He moves at a little different rate than the rest of our folks. He's going to be a tremendous force in our league."

Started 11 games at Winona state?  here's the stat line for last year:

PASSING            GP    Effic           Cmp-Att-Int    Pct           Yards     TD    Long Avg/G
Teigland, J     12    149.7    208-341-12    61.0    2942    24    73    245.2
Bradshaw, B     11    268.0    17-22-0            77.3    303              5    57    27.5

The stats do look strong, and it sounds like he stepped in as a second teamer his Soph year when Teigland (of Indianola) got hurt.  Looks like a good pick up, but depends how wide the gap is between DIII and Mid-level DII back up.  On the other hand a walk on from the SEC is intriguing, but many conference schools pick up a walk on or three each year.  Can't wait to see how they all measure up between the white lines!

From what I was told from a Winona St fan is that Bradshaw began his Freshman season as the backup and then got a handful of starts that season after the starter went down.  Then, as a Sophomore he began the season as the starter and got another handful of starts in before he went down with an injury.  His 11 starts were as a Freshman and Sophomore.  He didn't have eye popping stats but was considered more of a dual threat running/throwing QB.  Winona St then got a D1 transfer in last season that took over the starting QB job and led the team to a 9-2 record and a playoff berth.  Realizing his starting days at Winona were behind him, he transferred to UD.  Also, he is already taking grad classes and Dubuque offers the program he is in and Winona St did not.

The Tennessee transfer Myles, will be fun to see how he works out.  He was an Under Armour All-American recruit out of high school, not your typical D1 walk-on that realized he would never get off the bench like we've all seen come into the IIAC ever year.  Some do well and others have decent careers, while some never get off the bench even at the D3 level.  This guy should have some different expectations, though like you say, can't wait to see how they measure up between the white lines.

Loras preview is up from the Telegraph-Herald...

http://www.thonline.com/sports/local_sports/article_b2d600d6-ea29-59bb-8e8c-f3c53dfa8b96.html

From the article...

Accountability: It's what the Loras College football team is all about in 2013. It means taking responsibility for yourself as an individual and to your teammates in an all-for-one, one-for-all attitude of expecting success.

"I think this is the closest team after camp since I've been here," senior captain Will Tumberger said. "The big focus is family and one of our mottoes is expect victory. We expect nothing less."

Coming off a 2-8 campaign and a seventh-place finish in the Iowa Conference at 1-6, Loras coach Paul Mierkiewicz said the family atmosphere he is instilling in the Duhawks is all about building the framework for victory.

"It's not only the X's and O's that win football games, especially in this league because of the quality of play," Mierkiewicz said. "There has to be some other variable that comes into play. If you're in the fourth quarter and putting your hand down, you have to know you've worked as hard as the guy next to you. It at least puts you in a situation to be successful, and that is all we are trying to do."

Luckily we only have a handful of days until this happens  ;D

The QB looks like a solid pick-up, although I still feel its a considerable step down from Hanus (and thats a massive compliment to Hanus, no disrespect to the replacement). Im also very intrigued by the safety transfer...could be a real game changer if he can stay out of trouble (which appears easier said than done....but I say he deserves one more chance and I feel Zwiefel will have him on a short leash).

I said it last time there were big transfers and Ill say it again. I originally felt DBQ would finish right in the middle of the pack, but now Ill move them into the contender tier (along w/ Wartburg, Central, and Coe...similar to last year I suppose haha).
