Buena Vista coming in with the hardest strength of schedule in division 3

Central coming in at 35 and Coe following with 40

http://d3football.com/seasons/2013/schedule?tmpl=sos-template

So, strength of schedule is determinted by what exactly  ??? Central plays Osh Kosh; UD plays UW-Platteville---those 2 games a wash in my opinion but UD's other 2 UW games much more difficult then centrals. Auggie alone should knock them below UD. And Coe at 40 with non-conf games against cornell and monmouth  ???

These rankings are plan whacked out. I sincerely hope they are not used at seasons end.

Willie U

Augustana's record is 2-2, which is 2-1 when you take the Central game out of the calculation. They calculate out pretty well, actually.

From a subjective standpoint, aside from the numbers, they finished above .500 in the CCIW last year, a conference that's tougher than the IIAC. That's a good opponent.

How are NAIA opponents treated?

(i.e Dutchfan1) Henceforth, it would be so totally awesum if u would never respond to any of my posts or messages please.
Now back to what's important, the Spartans doin tha damn thang smashing Blackburn College as I said 49-6 (my predcition was 49-16) I guess I gave BB 2 much credit or not enough credit to Mr. Jay Davis Def. Coord.(Great Job coach!) (38) total yards for BB. Damn, it doesn't get better than that. But this day belonged to the offense. Jamar Jackson the most dangerous QB in the IIAC (better than Cris Lovley) threw for 5TDs and ran for 2. Impressive by any QB on any level. Amen? And catching was the best reciever in the IIAC SR. 6ft 2in 185lbs 4.54 40yrd dash Daunta Peterson 12rec 191yds 2tds IIAC player of the week!( any arguments state your case.) Oh, don't double him because soph. Torrey (prettyboy) Smith 9rec 127yds. Great Job everyone!
Now the focous is 2 Luther, who I think has the best stadium in the IIAC, but sorry the game will be played at UD. ( Tha House on Hanuted HIll) this one will be great to watch. UD  at home 20-16  UD misses a FG but blocks 2. Speacial Teams! Speacial Teams! Speacial Teams!

Whats the deal I leave 4 two weeks, come back and Luther is the best team in the IIAC. Good job on you win aganist WB I guess beating my spartans wasn't a fluke. (lol) Fight to win the conf. we need some new blood in the playoffs to keep the confrence fresh. I hate to say it but I knew the spartans wouldn't beat Simpson who has been the toughest team 2 face on Saturdays since my freshman year with Coach Mike Murray in 2000. (Funny what U get tricked into) But F all that, I have a beef with these people on here talking sh*t hiding behind these computer screens. It's all subjective.  Cornell sitting at 3-1 overall...and 3-0 when you take Coe out of the equation helps Coe out in the SOS.  If Cornell ends up 7-3 that will be better for Coe than UW-Lacrosse going 3-7 but playing in the WIAC for Dubuque.

You can argue the CCIW is tougher than the IIAC.  Last year Augustana went 4-3 in the CCIW and they lost to Central that went 4-3 in the IIAC and Dubuque that went 4-3 in the IIAC.  The IIAC champion lost by 3 points to the CCIW co-champion in the playoffs.  Now the year before Dubuque got smoked by the CCIW champion, so there you go.

But they beat Loras that barely beat Rockford. Auggies SOS is not that great.

Here's my thinking......The WIAC is by your rankings, the toughest conference in D3. But, you rank SOS for individual teams based on records of opponents. We all know that most all of the UW schools would WALK through the Midwest Conference or 70% of the rest of the conferences so it doesn't matter that cornell is 3-1 (not taking anything away from their improvement however)when you look at their opponents by comparison and the fact that Coe beat them 4?-7. My point is, in my opinion and I hope these things get considered when they count (at the end of the season), UD's SOS is 2nd to only BV in the IIAC. 3 UW colleges from the BEST D3 conference in the nation weigh much more heavily then beating auggie or cornell or monmouth or I can't remember the cupcake wartburg played? even if those schools have .500 records or better because their opponents are not that tough.

Willie U

Willie University

And Auggie may have finished 4-3 in the CCIW last year but the spartans whooped up on them last year  also when they did that. UW-SP, UW-LAX, and UW-Platteville are much more formidable opponents then Auggie.

hazzben

Those are all valid points, which is why results against regionally ranked opponents is added.

Look at it this way. UST beat UWRF and UWEC. It is killing their SOS. And neither will be regionally ranked. At least UWO & UWP will have a shot at being ranked. The losses to those teams will count for something, where UST's wins will only hurt them (SOS-wise).

But, you rank SOS for individual teams based on records of opponents.

Just so there is no misunderstanding, this is the NCAA's strength of schedule formula, using their math. We've been calculating it for years as a service to fans but the text at the top of the page should be clear about what this is. Not sure why it's suddenly so misunderstood in 2013.

Thinking about this Saturday's Spartan Homecoming Game against Luther ... I remember back in the Fall of '63 when the Norse and the Dutch were the dominant teams in IIAC football in a 9 team league that included the usual suspects plus Iowa Wesleyan and Upper Iowa ... Parsons College was on the "outs" then.

Luther was on the road against the Spartans ... and "Red" MacAleece (whose son later starred in bball for UD), the sports voice of radio KDTH (Dubuque Telegraph Herald owned radio station) was describing in his pre-game on-the-air analysis the game against the over-matched Spartans.  When the Norse ran onto Chalmers' Field, MacAleece said "And here come the lions."  UD lost 32-0 that day.  I wish for a much better out-come for this year's Homecoming.

GO SPARTANS!
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

http://www.thonline.com/sports/other_sports/article_3b89ba81-17e4-5c25-8202-39c8e5cd4d3b.html

from the article...

Luther (2-2, 1-1)

at Dubuque (2-2, 1-0)

Kickoff: 2 p.m.

Last season: The Spartans defeated The Norse, 29-0, while holding them to eight first downs and 158 total yards.

Outlook: The Spartans want to keep their momentum going after a big conference-opening win over perennial contender Central last week at Chalmers Field ... This is a game of contrasting styles. The Spartans lead the Iowa Conference in passing, averaging 273.2 yards per game. The Norse rank last in passing at 36.8 yards per game. ... The Spartans have thrown a league-leading 172 passes, while The Norse have attempted 26 passes. ... The Norse lead the Iowa Conference in rushing at 304.8 yards per game, led by Josh Vos, who leads the league with 114.5 yards per game. UD is last in rushing at 93 yards per game, but Kyle Acker has carried the load and is averaging 76 yards per game. Luther boasts the league's top run defense, allowing just 90.8 yards per game. ... UD receivers Tyler Rutenbeck and Sean Anderson share the league lead with 27 catches ... Rutenbeck's seven touchdowns are second only to Vos who has eight. ... The Spartans have played a difficult schedule through four games and despite both teams 2-2 records, expect Dubuque to improve to 2-0 in league play.

And...

Coe (4-0, 1-0 )

at Loras (1-3, 0-1)

Kickoff: 1 p.m.

Radio: WDBQ-AM 1490

Last year: The Kohawks ran away with a 69-7 victory on their way to an undefeated Iowa Conference record and league title.

Outlook: The Kohawks are ranked No. 19 in the latest DIII poll and are doing it with defense, allowing just nine points per game, which could be trouble for the Duhawks who rank seventh in the league at 17.5 points per game. ... Loras' defense has given up 36 points per game and will have to toughen up against a Coe team that is averaging 24 points per game. ... Coe is led by Greg Mohs, who ranks second in rushing at 103.8 yards per game. ... The Duhawks counter with the league's No. 3 rusher Nate Carrier at 91.8. ... This is a tough matchup for Loras, which will have to show improvement in every phase of the game to compete.
