First, I would like to make it abundently clear that not all Loras fans act like lorbeck. My apologies to the board   ;)

Second--Any wartburg guys with connections, can you answer this.? How are the Anamosa kids doing in camp?

lorbec:

You will notice I said nothing about Wartburg being the only IIAC school with good athletes and good academics.  You read way more into by post than was there. ???

You will also note that Wartburg, in the past few years, has had large numbers of seniors on their roster.  I would guess that the percentage of players that last all four years at Wartburg is similar to most other schools. :o

Finally, if Loras didn't have any freshmen hang it up the first week of practice, the DuHawk practices aren't tough enough.  Every level of football, from PeeWees to the NFL looses some players in the preseason.  At some level of competition most people realize the sport is no longer for them. :(

That is why I recommend golf and tennis to young people.  You can play years with people that have similar talent levels. ;D

D-lineman- Nick First. atleast I hope he is playing d-line.  He was my starting 3 tech and center last year.

If you could check how Jacy Bodi is doing at Wartburg that would be great. I played with him in high school and he is one of those 90 recruits

Lorbec - Yeah, I also never said Wartburg had the best academics.  Just that it was good.  I know a lot of guys who quit football at some point during their college careers.  Even though they were disappointed their FB career didn't go well, like I said, they were still at a great school and got a great education.  I would hardly consider their choice to go to an IIAC school a bad one.

With that in mind, at least Wartburg has a JV schedule to let the younger guys get some experience.  If I understand it correctly, Linfield and St. John's both have had huge number of guys go out and neither school has a formal JV schedule.  Yet, getting the opportunity to play on a great team was probably a real thrill for the plethera of benchwarmers.  I don't hear any of them complaining.

Wartburg fans--You're correct, you do have almost superior athletics right now. No doubt about that. I would have to say until someone knocks you off the championship post, it's put up or shut up.
Second-I did read way too much into the post about still getting a quality education. Players drop out at Loras, UD, Coe, Luther...etc. just like anywhere else. Some probably shouldn't have tried in the first place. One of the reasons I love D3 so much is that you aren't penalized for leaving a sport unlike the upper levels. It's just one of those things I guess, you either love Wartburg, or you hate them. BUT, like I said before I still respect the heck out of you guys.  The Rock Bowl might now be finished for the first game, but you guys are going to love it when it's done. Good luck to all! Didn't mean to sound like an ass that much....but I did; here's to a big foot in the mouth. ;D

Wartnight- I was referring to your academics as 3rd or 4th best (obviously somewhat of a subjective thing to measure, that's my educated opinion)  As far as athletics, obviously at this point Wartburg is the top dog, anyone is stupid to say otherwise.

Even the MOST loyal Wartburg fan would have to admit that it is pretty unlikely for ANY school to have the best athletics and academics in the conference. There are just too many ways in which the two contradict, even at the D3 level.  When you have so many sports competing at the national level, that is taking presedence over the academic program. Not necessarily in lieu off, but you cannot have it both ways at the top level. There are good student-athletes out there, but at some point in the process, athletics trumps academics or vice versa. Anyway, enough of that... the point was, Yes, Wartburg has the best athletics right now.. so just enjoy that.

Shoot-
My point was that no Wartburg fan brought up that we had the best academics.

I am new here, but I'm reading things about wartburg being superior in athletics?  Lets have a little history lesson here fella's, a few good years does not make one superior.  It is clear to me that Central is the leader in this conference. Year after year, they are consistanly the team to beat.

Spurrier

Pat,

see what happens when the football board becomes readily available to "basketball types". . .

central has a rich tradition, but that program is on the slide thanks to the spread offense. . .Central dominated with huge offensive lineman, a strong running game, and a good defense. . .those factors never change for winning football teams. . .is rural iowa rife with athletes that fit into a spread offense?. . .give me iowa-corn-fed-beef boys stuffing the ball down your throat any day
Why the defense ain't werkin'?

Spurrier

"battle of the bridge"  ud vs uw platteville. . .i like it

hey, duhawks. . .this is the year

when was the last time it happened?
Why the defense ain't werkin'?

That is a good point about the spread offense.  I am not sold on the new coach at Central.  Time will tell.

Walston Hoover

Wartburg has won the last 8 IIAC all-sports trophies, Central last won one now 10 years ago. The Dutch are no doubt the dominant athletic program in the conference.

Spurrier-I think if I remember right you and I were on the same side of this topic last year about the fricken spread offense. Maybe someone can clue me in here, but I doubt the great Simpson and Central teams of yore ran much spread. I didn't think I would here Steve Spurrier say that you have to run the ball to win games.
