Walston,

I have not followed the IIAC that long.  But looking on the IIAC record page Donnewerth was MVP and Kelley was not as far as I can see.  Maybe you can express some thoughts as to why he wasn't.  If he dominated two positions the way you said then were the coaches not impressed?  Let us in on your insight into this.  Just want to learn the past and get educated on this topic.

I'd have to agree with sportsknight. Jorgenson was a two-time MVP at a time when Williams was coaching, which means that running the ball always came first. And during his senior year, Jorgenson took the team to the national semi-finals. But he certainly did have the advantage of a HUGE o-line: a couple of All-Americans and I believe all 5 were all-conference at least once (if not twice). All 5 had to be around 300 lbs. I can't image there has been a more dominant o-line in the IIAC in recent years, if ever.  Donneworth had the luxury of a gun-slingin' offensive game plan, but he had to run for his life back there. As a unit, his o-linemen weren't very good. He also took his team to the playoffs his senior year.

Both were 3-year starters and obviously outstanding quarterbacks. Simpson was very lucky to have them. Down the road, I assume both will be selected for the Simpson Hall of Fame.

Anyone remember Hagen?  the older wartburg following might(being he was there for all of one season)
He spoke  to me my sr year @ denver and he  was  a complete tool.
I heard  when he decided to leave Waverly, he didn't even tell the players, just packed up and left.
After seeing this quote, that sounds about par for the course. Below is a blurb out of the ESPN article on him.  you can see it's a down time of the year for Ivan Maisel...

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/storycolumnist=maisel_ivan&id=2900584&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab3pos1

"Hagen has worked for Holtz and College Football Hall of Fame member Chris Ault of Nevada. He also spent one season as the head coach at Division III Wartburg College in Iowa, a job so hands-on that his duties included lining the field before the game.

Wartburg went 7-3 in that 1996 season, yet Hagen decided that, with one child at home and another on the way, he and his family could not live the small-college life.

"I was probably selfish taking that job, just me being selfish," Hagen said. "'You know what? I'm going to go be a head coach.' Thinking of I, me, my opportunity, as opposed to we as a family."

Walston, in regards to your question.
I'll take Cody.  It's silly really to group/compare a QB to a guy that is shutting people down and making catches and TD's all in the same game.
playing a speciality position and running all over the field is plenty tiring.  Playing both ways in college and being really good at both of them is beyond comparison.  I can't imagine conditioning being a big factor for a qb.  they take a bunch of 5 step drops and make handoffs.   As far as the MVP awards, I really can't explain that one, it's beyond me I guess.

Sportsknight,  I played against plummer. He was pretty good.  I'll take Rausch over him hands down when you talk about being a dominant WR though. He made people look really bad, quite often. (it didn't hurt he had wheels throwing to him)
If my memory serves me right, Rausch averaged a TD catch about every 5 catches his Jr year and the reason he didn't have 70 or 80 catches is because we also ran the ball pretty well and averaged over 200 yds/game running. I think...
(side note: I am slightly bias)

I remember watching game film of Shane Davis while I was in HS, that guy could flat out fly.  he put up 300 on WB his Jr or Sr year I believe.  I also saw film on  Jorgenson, he was the real deal.  Clint Head and Guy Lehman as well.  Lehman was by far the hardest running back my 3 years in the league and put up some big numbers.  Kac; well when a guy has a full page article written about him in SI, there's not much to discuss.

Donnenworth was a stud without him the storm would not have been very good.

Cody was also a stud. Without him, Wartburg would have still been Great.

MVP means to me a team can not survive without him. So donnenworth meant more to his team and was the MVP.

IF you are talking about the Most Outstanding Player.. that would have been Cody Kelly

Devine,
I had heard hagen was kind of a tool as well, but I also heard he was an offensive genius. Either way, that was a bad hire for the Knights.

Cody didn't have the defensive stats because no one threw at him.
He didn't have the offensive stats because he wasn't a full-time player and we had Winter anyway.

Anybody see that DIllon is a finalist for the open Drake job. I've never see someone with a horrible last 4-5 seasons move up as fast as he has.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Dillion on Drake list.

I think once again the "Newspaper Iowa Depends On" ?? was just throwing out names of people THEY think should get the job + why not bring one of DM's own back to town.

If I were Drake I'd talk to Willis, before Dillion.

Aaron Kampman on Coach Ed Thomas
I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

Wartburg would have been good without Kelley, but definitely not great.  People don't realize all that he did for the Knights, especially in '03.  Yes Wartburg had a really good defensive line that year, but the run support they got from the safeties was what made the defense great (McIntire, Burns), and that is attributed to the cover 4 that Wartburg played a ton of.  Need to have a lockdown corner in cover 4.  Also, add in all the special teams work he had, and the 60 catches or whatever, how can you not name him MVP?

I really have a hard time believing Dillon is actually a finalist for the Drake job.  I'm pretty sure the new AD there still wants to win.
THIS IS...OUR HOUSE!  WHOSE HOUSE?!...OUR HOUSE!  WE RULE....OUR HOUSE!!

Wasn't Cody Kelley the kid that played both sides of the ball, O and D? If I am thinking of the same player, he was amazing in any position you put him in. He was fun to watch -- he would have been more fun to watch if he hadn't had such a great game against Central that day.....

DutchFan2004

The thing about Dillon is that how many "Head" coaches are applying for the job at this time of year.  Most of the coaches, I would think, are planning there season now not looking at what is open now.  That may bode well for Dillon.  He did make Cornell more competitive this year.  If he gets the job it may be more of a timing thing than his record don't you think?

I think there were 2 long-time Drake assistants on the list the Register had yesterday as well.
A couple others along with Valley HS coach Gary Swenson. That would be too bad if they lost him ;)

If dillon leaves after one year what do you think that says about his excitement level at cornell? It would be a step up from cornell, but it just shows even an alum doesn't think they can turn it around in Mt vernon

dutchfan1

Dillon was quoted on the Cornell website as saying "[Coaching at Cornell] is a tremendous opportunity and I'm excited to take on the challenges of this job," Dillon said. "This is the job I've dreamed of having since May of 1981 and thankfully it's going to happen."

He's dreampt about this job for so long....obviously a year was enough time to fulfill a dream....now it's on to bigger and better things.

Alfred's right. I have a very, very hard time believing Dillon is a candidate for the Drake job. How he ended up on the DM Register's list is beyond me. Seriously, what a joke. And I don't think they would go the high school coach route. I know it's late, but I bet they will have some very strong candidates.

DutchFan2004

I would think that there have to be some good assitants that would be a good signing even at this late date.  I think Drake would be better off with a college assistant than a successful high school coach.  The high school coaches have never recruited.
