Ive never considered a 20 point loss a blowout by any means, not exactly a close game but Central did a hell of a lot better than Wesley in the National Semifinals!:) Either way comparing Whitewater to Platteville is like comparing prime rib to mcdonalds. Bottom line is Drake gets beat by Wartburg and Central 99% of the time.
I am a big Central fan.  I was at that game and I'm pretty sure Whitewater could have scored enough for you to consider it a blow-out if their coach had wanted to.  I always meant to post something over on their board to congratulate/thank them for not running up the score when they had the chance.

In the final 2006-07 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics standings, Luther finished 17th in the nation to lead Iowa Conference schools.  Wartburg finished 24th while Loras was 33rd.

Congrats to the Norse, Knights, and Duhawks.

Wartburg led the Iowa Conference by finishing 17th in 2005-06.

I had no idea that a Pioneer Coach was now at Stanford.. going from the  Pioneer to Pac 10 is a HUGE Jump..

As far as a DIII head coach going straight to a D-1 coaching job(not D1-AA) I will predict it's never happened.  Pat, can I get a witness?

Everything has happened as far as coaching hires.  Within my lifetime Notre Dame and Iowa both hired high school coaches as head coaches (see Gerry Faust and Bob Cummings).  I did not do much research on this, but Ossie Solem coached at Luther in the 1920s before taking the Drake job and then going to Iowa.  Drake would have been Division I at the time.

Dr. Eddie Anderson coached at Loras in the early 1920s before moving on to DePaul, Holy Cross, and Iowa.  DePaul and Holy Cross would have been considered Division I jobs at the time.

I am sure there have been many others, but those were two former Iowa Conference coaches that I remembered.  I always respect the jobs that were Division I back in the 1960s or earlier since there are so many current Division I and I-AA schools that were Division II or lower at that same time many decades ago.

Congrats to the Norse on a great season of athletics.  It is always nice to lead the conference that you are in.

All the talk about Dillon going to Drake is a moot point now anyway.  Drake getting Loney may be a good hire.  I think his offense will put up some points.  I hope he does well sounds like a good guy.

I don't know when the last time was a coach went from D-III to I-A directly, but it's probably happened. Just not recently and not very likely.

So I just had a long post typed up and lost it somehow.
Anyway, just got back from fishing up north and see I missed some good discussion over the past few days. Before I forget-congrats to little Spurrier. You guys will have fun following his career.
To go back to the previous topic-IMHO, Drake=Coe in the IIAC-Consistently top third finish and always contending. Don't kid yourselves though, they aren't the big time program the Register makes them out to be down here in DM. They struggle to attract big #'s for their games as well. Somewhere around a 15,000 seat stadium that barely drew 10,000 for the opener against UNI. They only average 4300/game for the year which was the same as Wartburg in a much larger population base. Take away the UNI game and they averaged just over 3300/game.
They have next to no following and struggle to get fans to come to watch a fully-funded Division 1 basketball program.
They do have a very nice stadium though. We played Council Bluffs TJ there last year and it was a great atmosphere. Roosevelt plays all their home games there, but it is not cheap to use their facility.
We open with Valley at Drake this year so the atmosphere should be nuts.

Spurrier,

Congrats on the decision.  It is a tuff one.  I wish you and JR all the best.  Mrs. DF and I were talking last night how fast the last three years have gone and how we have mixed emotions about this coming fall.  Love the football season but hate to see my son's playing days come to a close.  Have a great ride and enjoy it while it lasts.

Walston,

That 3,300 figure for attendance is not good at all considering that Central and Waverly have much less population bases to draw from.  That is horrible attendance considering that they are the largest football program in Des Moines.

I drove through Eldora last week '04.
Had a nice little canoe trip down the Iowa River. A great river for what we use it for ;)

spurrier:

I could become a Bearcats fan.  Best of luck to lil' spurrier.  I hope he enjoys Cincinnati.

I'm on my way to Scheels Sporting Goods to pick up a Bearcat cap.  That will keep them guessing at my coffee group.
