I drove through Eldora last week '04.
Had a nice little canoe trip down the Iowa River. A great river for what we use it for ;)

Did you take that trip with my Orange Clad Former Co-Worker? He was looking for a kayak a few weeks ago.... :)

Of course. That guy paddled upstream more than an hour to catch the rest of the group.

He joined the trek about 7 hours late so paddled upstream to join us.

Since the board has been dead since Wally's outdoor adventure reports, I bring up a new topic.

What effect will Grandview adding football in 2008 have on IIAC, more effect to Central - Simpson than other teams because of central Ia location?

Mike Woodley will do OK if he gets the support of administration.

Aaron Kampman on Coach Ed Thomas
I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

Well not knowing much about Grandview maybe you can tell.  Who will they play and what level will they compete at?  I don't know how much it will affect Central as the Dutch have some pretty good connections with where they recruit now.

So Dordt starts with JV this coming season before going varsity in 2008 and now Grandview will start up in 2008 as well.  Both NAIA schools.

I would think with Centrals and Simpsons history it might be hard for Grandview to compete for recruits.  Dordt I don't really know about being from the western part of the state.  You have BV out there as pretty much the only D-III school.  Northwestern, Morningside, Briar Cliff and now Dordt are all NAIA.  I don't know who gets the western Iowa kids.

So as far as NAIA schools in state we will have Northwestern, Morningside, Briar Cliff and Dordt in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  Graceland in the Heart of America Conference...I believe.  Grandview, William Penn, Iowa Wesleyan, and St. Ambrose in the Midwest League for football while in the Midwest Classic Conference for everything else.  Then you have Waldorf as an independent in football but in the Midwest Classic Conference for everything else.

Waldorf already plays a couple IIAC schools most years, plus often plays Upper Iowa and Drake.  Does anybody see them trying to go IIAC in a few years???  Or possibly Grinnell following Coe and Cornell into the IIAC from the Midwest Conference???

Also it seems like the NAIA is dying out yet there are quite a few teams in Iowa going NAIA.  Something like 93 schools in NAIA and we will have 10 in our state.  Somewhat interesting.

I think Grand View's recruiting efforts will have the same affect that Billy P's recruiting efforts have had on Central's program -- minimal at best.

The only advantage of NAIA is the possibility of an athletic scholarship. But why go to a start-up program when there are successful established programs within a short distance.

The DM Register's article about Woodley said he has a pipeline from Texas. He's got a very common sports name in Iowa that will no doubt land some pretty good recruits.
I believe Waldorf and Grand View are joining St. Ambrose's conf in 2008 for football.

Doolittle,

I don't ever see Grinnell joining the IIAC.  The pride themselves on high admission standards something like 30 on the ACT's.  Not that athletes aren't smart but I don't see the good athletes averaging 30 on the ACT's.  That being said Grinnell is not what you would say a power in their conference now.  I would dare say that Grinnell would fight it out with Cornell for bottom spot in the IIAC.  Some of the other more enlighted IIAC posters may have another take but thats the way I see Grinnell.

footballdaddy,

I don't see scholarships helping here in Iowa.  That was the Upper Iowa claim to fame to recruit we can give a scholarship now that we are D2.  I don't see any great improvement from the Peacocks since bolting the IIAC to D2.  I don't think that will help Grand View as most of the IIAC's packages are as good or better than the NAIA schools.  Walston may be able to speak more to that than I but that's my understanding.
