That is a good question AshPark, and I think there are many different things that will need to be looked into, if a rule such as this was implemented.

Can;t believe I missed that one Sportsknight. I still take any chance I can to rip the Norse.

I agree about Mc Carney and this year will be tough.  Seems that the Cyclones have had some great coaches over the years in several sports with good success.  However, we have also, like other unversities, had to deal with off-field disruptions that have had detrimental and lasting effects.  The 90's proved that ISU could be a force to recon with.  My only hope is for a victory over the Hawkeyes.

Are you taking a day off on Thursday to plow up the golf course in Waverly?  I've just put a fresh coat of orange paint on my putter, so I'm ready to go.

I did the alumni outing down here in Ankeny, but since Wednesday starts the official practices in Iowa, It doesn't send the best message to the players if I skip to go golfing.

Don't worry about the spell-check.We're all fluent in typo!

Welcome Norsedad.

The typos are a normal hazard.

As for the transfer rule,  if it is on the books, even if unenforced most of the time, I think Coe has a legit beef.  If the rules are already there and Coe and Wartburg are members of the IIAC and have approved the rules then it is up to the schools to enforce them if they want them enforced.  If there is not a rule then there is no worries.  I think we would all agree that most of the transfers have never had this much impact on a team either way (getting or losing a key player)  I think we would all agree that a senior has never done this in recent history anyway.  This is a hard situation and if Coe objects and is within the rules then sorry.  I think the rules are there for a purpose.  We will have to see how this plays out.  Walston is pretty well informed so there must be a little something to it.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with the proposed transfer rule.  Commish Cochrane is a smart guy, so he'll probably make this process take some time so that it doesn't seem completely reactionary to what's happened between Wartburg and Coe.  He's got a law degree, too, so don't be surprised to see him investigate the hell out of such a rule to see if it would stand up in court.  With D3 athletes paying to play, I don't see much of a possibility that you could limit where or who they decide to play for, but I'm no expert.

A thought about that rule.  It may be a tool in a way too.  You wouldn't have a student playing a fall sport at one school and a spring sport at another.  You could have a student leaving at the semester and playing football in the fall and running track, golf, or tennis and another school.  Just a thought.

sportsknight,

I hear what you are saying and that makes some sense.  The rule however if it is on the books and has been agreed to by all the IIAC schools may not have to hold up in court.  I don't think Wartburg would want to forfiet games that an ineligible player would play in.  I hope he does not take to long to rule so it can be resolved.  If Walston is correct the ball is in Coe's court.  If they don't protest then I don't see a problem,  But whos to say that UD, Loras, Central, or any other school would not protest.  Hope this does not cause to many problems.

Sportsknight,

Is this a proposed rule?  Or is it a current rule?  Do you know for sure?

I've been told by a fairly reliable source close to Coe that Coe has filed or is thinking about filing a motion with the Iowa conference that forces players to sit out a season when they transfer between Iowa Conference schools. Probably filed by Charlie himself.

Far as I know, there is not currently such a rule on the books in the IIAC.

The only example of this that comes to mind right away is the current Loras baseball player that started at Wartburg in the fall of '05 before transferring to Loras for the second semester.  I know he (Dubuque native) had thought about playing football at Wartburg, but can't remember if he was on the team or not.  If he was, he would not have seen any PT.

I know the WIAC has an intra-conference transfer rule that requires the player to sit out one season before being eligible.  I am not a fan of such a rule at the d3 level.  I think someone was saying it before, this is supposed to be one of the attractions to this level of play.  If a kid is paying for his education than he deserves to control the decisions about where he plays, you can't put a lot of red tape at this level or the commitment to playing athletics simply won't be worth it to some...you might lose a lot of talent to the "anything goes" NAIA, or d2.
I hope the conference considers this, and also considers the absolute freak of a situation this is.
Suckow deserves to be happy with his college experience.  He is paying for it.  Plus none of us can fully know any of the extraneous conditions (educational, personal, athletic) that caused him to leave Coe, personally i'd only need a sign pointing me in the right direction...ha.  In all seriousness though, this does not excuse how he left the school, just like he deserves to be happy his teammates deserved to be the first to know after he made his decision.  Coe, I feel your pain and sympathize.  I wish you all the luck this year against the evil empire, the new york yankees of the iowa conference...beat the knights!   :D
