What is this country coming to when a football game has to wait for soccer? I'm sure the soccer program paid for the field turf at Simpson.

If you don't have the lines for soccer on the field you don't have to worry about that.   ;D

So who paid for the turf? the football team? Get real, this isn't DI. There aren't "revenue" sports. The only argument I'll listen to is that the football has 100 or so (for Wartburg 230 ;)) guys paying tuition, but football is far and away the most expensive sport to run, so it becomes a wash. Please don't get me wrong, I'll make fun of the grass fairies along with everyone else, but don't tell me that the football team produced enough revenue to pay for the field. In fact, if I remember correctly, there were a couple of donors that said they would like to see soccer played on that field.

SC,

I may agree on one point.  I don't think there are many sports that are in the black.  I will say that IMHO Football at Central produces more cash than soccer since at Central there isn't even any money collected at the soccer matches.  If the crowds at the Central soccer matches are any indication of the crowds at all IIAC soccer matches even if they collected money the football teams 5 home games would produce more revenue than soccer.  I know the cost is much less to run a soccer program than football.  I think you need to take things a little lighter I have only been poking in jest.  I know that land is a problem for some schools that are land locked.  It may be the most economical way to run the programs but I don't think the best  ;D  Separate would be best IMHO but I understand that that can not happen at times.

I was just having a little fun too. Although the appeal of watching a large group of people doing unnatual things with their heads and feet in the quest of one point evrey two weeks is lost on me.

I realize when someone's joking around and I certainly don't take myself too seriously. I'm the one always poking fun at Simpson in season.

The whole revenue issue has come up before on this board and I find it amusing when someone thinks any IIAC football teams, or any other sports for that matter, are in the black.

Ok I am crossing over boards.

Oles versus Luther. September 1 in Northfield MN. Is Luther going to stop thinking about that comeback by the oles and get their head in THIS years game.

The Norse haven't been playing defense the past two years like they did in at least the previous three seasons (the special team play also fell last year).  I am talking about the seasons in general and not just the Ole game.  The Oles have been one of the best offenses that Luther has seen the past two years.  This is a huge year for the St. Olaf program.

It sounds like there are a lot of new faces at DB and WR in Decorah.  You could probably say that almost every year about the WR position as Coach Hefty has been able to bring in some talent at that position over the last five years.  Much like the Hawkeyes, I will be most focused on what the Norse look like on the OL and DL.  The DL could be good this year and they will need to be if they want to get back to forcing lots of turnovers and limiting opposition points and opposition first downs.  The DBs also are a big part of that scheme.

The OL returns three starters with seniors Stavast and Allan having started almost the whole time they have been Norse.  The Norse are breaking in a new QB, but hopefully the OL helps in that transition.  They should have lots of talent at WR, but guys who make lots of plays like Pearson don't come around that often.

All of the RBs are back for what it is worth (Sherden, Lamos, Bass).

Coach Paul Hefty is 24-26 in five seasons at Luther.  The Norse were 2-8 last year.  That was tied for the worst season in Decorah since 1950.

All this Wartburg talk on here is rubbing off on my family.  My 2 year old son is currently dressed in orange and black and playing with an orange football!!!  Add to that my wife's favorite color is orange, we are Lutheran, and we live closer to Waverly than Dubuque...hmm.

Maybe I should send a video of my 2 year old to Wartburgs staff!!!

Now guys, no more making fun of Simpson's toupe, er, rug, er, um field turf....we are all going to get emails from the SID again.....

;D

While I certainly side with the majority here that soccer lines don't belong on a football field, I will say that if you are going to put the extra lines on, you might as well play your soccer games on the field.  Two years ago when Wartburg's football and soccer teams were both at Loras, they still played the soccer games down in "The Pit."  Maybe the Dusquawks thought they'd get some sort of home-field advantage down there, but the FieldTurf was down and I'm pretty sure the lights were up.  Why not play the soccer games on the big field too?

I love how no one responded to the slightly veiled comment by "The Show" regarding over-recruitment. It's unfortunate that some teams think it's a good idea to bring in a ridiculous number of freshmen just so those players don't go to another school. I'd like someone to do an analysis of the number of freshmen players who matriculated into the sophomore year roster at each institution over the last few years. I'd be willing to guess which schools have the highest attrition of players from year one to year two...

OK qbdriver; What is it you wish to discuss?

Suggestions:

1) This will be another in a long list of break out years for Luther.
2) Dubuque's 2006 season was a flash in the pan.
3) Cornell might finish as high as 8th in the league this season.
4) Central will never lose another conference game.
5) Coe got screwed.
6) Loras has a nice setting for the football field, but messed it up with soccer lines.
7) If Buena Vista could recruit worth squat they'd win the IIAC every year.
8: Simpson is known for hot coeds and a second tier football team.
9) Pat Coleman should run for President and Coco should be his running mate.

Praying and hoping that you are wrong about #3. In fact I will go out on a limb and say you are wrong about #3. I'm not saying Conference championship but I would take 4-5 wins this year.

Show- I can't imagine schools paying the hotel prices I heard they were going to charge at that place. We actually stayed in Carroll both years when we played at BV when I was at Simpson. Good ol' Super 8, man J Dubs was cheap. Do any teams actually stay in Storm Lake?

Havn't heard the going rate for rooms.

Super 8?  Ouch!  They could've at least put you up in the Carrollton.  Although you could still walk down the highway and play mini golf I suppose. (I assume it was the Super 8 by the McDonald's?)

I never heard of any teams staying in Storm Lake.  I thought some stayed in Ft. Dodge...

This has been discussed ad nauseum here before. Its Division 3. No coach is going to tell a player he shouldn't come to their school. The schools with the highest attrition are probably the schools that are winning every year. Lots of kids want to be a part of it after HS but realize they don't want to put the time or work in after seeing how much it takes to be a winning team.
Is 150 guys too much? I sure think so, but I know no coach is going to tell a freshman he can't go out, and if I recall correctly, there is no cutting allowed on IIAC rosters.
'Tis better to have too many guys than too few.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships
