Congrats to Freddie Jackson.  His preseason stats were certainly impressive.  It looked like if he had been cut Green Bay was waiting to snap him up.

The Knights were fun to watch this afternoon.  Swarming defense will keep the Knights in most games and a gazillion offensive options should make program sales double this year.  Our returning running back appears to be invigorated by the addition of the new faces in the backfield. Our Coe transfer looked good, but the real gem may be the new running back out of St. Louis. The kids hands out punishment when he runs the ball instead of taking punishment.  The wideouts all seemed to be in the flow of the game.  It doesn't appear this year the Knights will be running a couple decoy receivers down field then throwing to the same guy over and over again.  Lots of players touched the ball in the passing game.

Years ago when U of Michigan had the Fab Five basketball players there was the joke about not having enough basketballs to keep them all happy.  This may be the story with the Knight running backs and wideouts this year.

The O-line was probably adequate today, but Monmouth is not what Wartburg will see week after week in the IIAC.  Wartburg was controlling the tempo up front.  Perhaps I should be more excited about their play  They just don't seem quite as big and threatening as what we have been experiencing in the past.  Perhaps they are quicker and that is what the coaching staff wants.  Time will tell.

Tailgating was kind of tame or you may call it lame.  Nothing there seemed to be very inviting for the fans to party.  Some sort of official duo passed through our parking lot a couple times.  It appeared one of them was going to discuss the choice of beverages one Wartburg group was enjoying.  His partner  stopped him from leaving his vehicle and sort of pointed all around the parking lot.  I think they decided it was a battle not worth fighting.  They simply circled for awhile then disappeared when the Orange Coven headed over to the Scottish sacrafice.

This is what a class act Freddy Jackson is: when he called his college coach, Erik Raeburn, after learning he had made the Bills' roster and was officially an NFL player, he was more interested in inquiring about Tommy Breitbach's outstanding performance for the Kohawks on Saturday.

What a great day for Coe football!

In the future I might suggest you just direct us to the Loras website for game statistics.

Strange ending to the Cornell/Northwestern game today.  It was a well played game throughout without the typical high number of turnovers you tend to see in the season opener.    Northwestern settles for a field goal after losing 5 yards on a 3rd and 1 from the 1, then gets the ball back and takes it into the end-zone again with about 50 seconds to go, needing only the extra point to tie.  I look to my right and Josh Lundeen, who just scored his second touchdown of the day with his tenth catch is in pain on the ground; not the best thing to see right then, thinking we'd need him in overtime.  Then I look to my left and the sprinklers are on, spraying everything including the sidelines between the 20s.  This goes on for a few minutes before they figure out how to stop the water.  Long story short, kicker goes cold, kick is blocked-possibly wouldn't have made it anyways-personal foul on the NWC defense ends any possiblity of getting the ball back.

In a way I'm glad Northwestern lost the game, as it would have been a shame to gain an advantage over cornell with the sprinklers.

Watch out IIAC, the wing-T is looking tough.

Was anyone in attendance at the Luther/St. Olaf game?  Was it as close of a game as the score indicated?  The blurb on the Norse website didn't say that much, except that the Norse took a 1 point lead in the 4th quarter and the Oles scored on the ensuing possesion.  Was it back and forth like this all game? Or was there a late surge?

Great opening weekend for the IIAC...the conference race will be interesting again this year with alot of teams competing for the title.  Can't wait to start the conference games!!!

And a little cherry on top: Congrats to Freddy Jackson for making the Buffalo Bills roster.  I always thought he was a very classy player during his time at Coe.  I will be rooting for him just because of his IIAC connection.

Hope everyone enjoys the holiday.
Go Norse!!!

I've been picking up bits and pieces concerning the UIU/Loras game of yesterday.  After reading some postings on D2 Football, the UIU Peacock Nation posting site, the box scores and newspaper accounts I've formed some observations.

1)  Good news for the Loras team.  This morning when you woke up you were still Loras students.  When the Peacock players woke up they were still....well, they were still Upper Iowa students.

2) It appears UIU still spends part of practice time perfecting their dance routines.  According to UIU Nation some of the fans were trilled the team was "celebrating" td's down on the field.  That wasn't taunting Loras fans.  In the past  Peacock players would do that when they were down by 4 touchdowns.

3)  Until two months ago most of the UIU freshman couldn't find Iowa on a map, let alone having ever been here.  Today most of them can find the state on a map, they just can't spell I-O-W-A.

4) This move to D2 has really help sell tickets.  I understand there were less than 1000 people there yesterday.  I would guess Loras brought most of the fans.

5) Upper Iowa seems thrilled about this victory over a former conference team.  One prediction had them now steam rolling into their conference championship game undefeated.  No disrespect to Loras, but I assume the Duhawks will get a few more knocks on the head before this season is over.  Maybe D2 isn't such a big deal.

Warthog - class as always.....reminds me of why I'm glad I have a UIU degree and not one from Wartburg. Elitist attitude as usual.

If you watched the game and not watch posts (btw...I don't see anything about celebrating) in fact the pic from Waterloo courier is just receivers jumping up like 99% of guys do after scoring these days.

UIU has a great bunch of student/athletes and great retention from last year and yes recruit from all over, doesn't matter (rather recruit from out state then in state rival colleges). Who really cares? Maybe you do and you've harped on that for years get over it.

The prediction on D2...you need to pay attention those two posters hate each other and they are digging at each other, and it is nothing more, the guy that posted it is a Northern booster.

Now to the game...there was a huge difference in the teams and you can tell UIU is in a much better position then it was in D3. Loras 9 first downs, they didn't do crap all day until 2nd team D was in for their only drive and TD of game. UIU did whatever they wanted on O all day.

Anyhow, keep comfie in your orange and black I know it gives you a warm feeling, oh god how it must be nice to be a Knight.

Wow, bitterness peacock...play Central or Wartburg and then you can talk about how great D2 is doing for you:)

Coocoo:

Lets not get too excited just yet.  Maybe your great day reference had to do with the NFL roster decisions.  You're happy about Fred J.  We all are, but back to current Coe football.

The win at IW was over a team that hasn't had a winning record since 2002.  They have won 30% of their games over the last three season.

I'd give you a "good" day. 8)  The NFL news was "great". ;D  The win over a weak sister was just "OK".   :)

One "great"  added to one "OK"  divided by two equals "good" .

The formula: ( ;D +  :) ) / 2 =  8)
