Dave-Getting ready to watch my DVR of ISU today, while typing on wireless.
Great day in Ames today, and a fun weekend topped off with the Wartburg win. Sat by a former player from the 70's today and got him caught up with the goings on at the Burg.
Re: ISU.
Those are 2 Not good football teams that played today. Iowa has beat 2 teams in the bottom 10 in the nation and lost to another that's not far behind. ISU didn't do anything they haven't done the last 3 weeks, except not fumble away 3 punts and Meyer only turned the ball over once instead of his usual 2 times/game. If that happens the last 2 weeks ISU is now 3-0. As it stands, we'll beat Toledo next week and probably beat Kansas State to end 3-9. With Iowa's inept offense, I wouldn't be surprised to see the hawks only win 4 the rest of the year unless some inventiveness works its way in there. Iowa plays with no emotion and looks like a bunch of robots. I was on the 46 right behind their bench today so I got to see everything. I think the bands were more excited. Is that how they look every game.

On a side note-Not much to say about the Wartburg game today except keep it rolling in Waverly. We could have the makings for a special year there with some of the talent that's in place.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

It was a good game in Pella today.  Sherden was a horse and ran the ball well.  I thought that Luther had a huge line and they moved the D in the first half pretty well.  The Dutch made some good adjustments in the second half and really contained him better the second half.  I will say that if teams don't come to play against Luther they will loose.  I think that Luther may be able to knock off a few this year and do better than last year.

The Show

Crappy Saturday for myself...good thing the Rams played decent last night.

I knew BV could keep it close for awhile, but the defense can't do it all.

Iowa never fails to disappoint in this series, but will be fine in the end. In fact, I'd take them with the spread next weekend at Wisconsin. ISU should keep the uniforms, they looked a hell of a lot better than the reds that don't match or the recent Ronald McDonald look.

I wonder when the last time Iowa failed to give up a TD, yet still managed to lose?

Very dissapointed today about the rams. It looked like we were going to come away with the win. Bottom line Cornell has to learn how to win. Had a chance to put a team away today and it didn't happen. There were plenty of opportunities for the rams to go up by a few scores but they did not capitalize on those situations.

Two weeks to prepare for a very tough Luther team. This bye week will be much needed so that they can clean some things up. A lot of season left to make some noise! Congrats to all the winners today including Loras. Hope there were no major injuries.

The MVP for the weekend should be Coach K.The Knights left a lot of points on the field in the first half after failing to convert twice in the red zone and throwing one pick.I have it on good authority that he took the team behind the woodshed at halftime with the result being one of the most dominant quarters I've ever witnessed. The D completely smothered BV and the offense put four TD's on the board.Absolutely a great second half performance.

I'm going to commiserate with Ash Park for a sec...

Loras certainly played hard and earned a win by playing nearly mistake free on offense.   They didn't, however, make but one big play on defense...Hall's INT.

The first Cornell INT was just a bad throw similar to the INT thrown by Loras.

On the 2nd INT give Hall credit for being in the right place.  Kobler tried to force it in there and was made to pay.  The ball should have been thrown away, but that's my opinion in hindsight, he probably saw something that I couldn't (how could I?)  I find it hard to fault Kobler, who plays his guts out, and I'm sure he feels bad about it...keep your head up kid.

The 3rd INT was a gift when the intended receiver fell at about the Loras 5.  The DB was shaded by the receiver and the ball came to him when the guy slipped.  Can't fault anyone really, just crappy luck.

Cornell outrushed Loras'.  Loras' ground game was not enough on its own to win this.  Loras took advantage of Cornell mistakes.

Key series of the game:
Score is Loras 23-20 in the 4th qtr, following the INT TD return, it took Cornell 2 plays to get the ball to the Loras 35 poised to respond.  2 penalties later it's 1st and 25 from the 50.  Cornell couldn't make it up and was forced to give the ball back.  McGrew makes a nice punt return and runs for 33 yards on 3 carries on the ensuing drive which leads to the insurance TD.

If Cornell doesn't meltdown on that drive they have a better than good chance of scoring the go-ahead TD and the Loras game plan perhaps has to take to the air where they were marginally less effective.

Bottom Line:  if Cornell eliminates the critical mistakes...which to me were unforced errors...Loras goes home with a loss.

But they didn't and Loras capitalized.

Congratulations to Loras.

Rams, keep working.  What you are doing is having a positive effect and you will get the IIAC monkey off your back.

I'm affraid this isn't a great time for Wartburg to be playing Luther.  The Norse are going to be like a wounded bear.   >:(

The Norse could well be the best winless team in the nation.  The Knights will have a huge target on their jerseys.  A win puts the Norse back on track and could posssibly be the first win in an 8-2 season.  This may sound crazy to some, but it seems the Norse really have the horses to make some serious noise.  If it isn't the Knights, some other team will soon be on the receiving end of an old fashioned butt kicking by a wild eyed  Norse team.

I knew this was gonna be a rough first 3 games for the Norse.  As it is the Norse will be playing their 3rd ranked team next week when Wartburg comes to Carlson Stadium.  St. Olaf wasnt ranked when we played them but we all know how accurate pre-season polls are....just look at that team in Michigan.  In both games(so far) Luther had the lead and were just one stop or one catch in the 4th Q from a W.  This is a very good team and I suspect they will loose maybe 1 more game at most.  Pull up those J-straps and button down those helmuts Wartburg and get ready for a war.  Props to Connell.  He is one tough hombre....but a sore hombre this morning I bet.

One helluva a way to start a season...@ St. Olaf, @ Central,  & vs. Wartburg at Carlson Stadium.  I would argue that this is the toughest opening of any schedule in the IIAC this year, and it will help the Norse throughout this season and in the future.  Some of the young guys are getting a taste early in their careers of tough, physical, IIAC football and it will help them to mature.  I know that Luther isn't as young this year as they have been in the past, but the tough schedule helps everyone get better.

I would love to be in Decorah next weekend to see a good, old-fashioned rivalry game, but such is that of life... :(

A great weekend in the IIAC as expected...Hope everyone is healthy and enjoy your Sunday football  :)

Warthog,

Your instincts about Luther are correct.  They have a large offensve line that was very physical.  The defensive line was just as physical.  They will make some noise in the IIAC.  You should be worried to play them at home.  Sherden was in top form and ran well in the first half.  I have to give Coach DeWaard credit.  In the third quarter he shut Sherden down.  Gave only 50 yards up in the second half.  I think Luther can match the physical play of the Knights D so it will be a good one in Decorah.

Another classis Luther-Central game, at least like the last 4 years. I though it would be close but not a shootout! Sounds like Connel and Huisman had huge games again. I love to see the passing game going...teams wont be able to stack the box on Schuring and the rest of the running game. Hopefully hes 100% soon. I agree, Wartburg has the toughest game of the week this week, up to Decorah against a very talented Luther team. Good luck to the Norse the rest of the season!

Storm-what?

Sounds like the Storm played closer than I would have maybe guessed. Had more total offense and it was really a neck to neck game. But one key fumble and one key intercepton made the outcome. Still a very young Storm team- homefully these mistakes will lessen as the season goes on. Too bad losing to Coe, that was one game we needed to win- it's going to be a lot tougher hanging with the "Big dogs" as the season goes on!
