Doolittle-what's your wife's cousin's name? You can send a private message if you want.

Sent you a PM.  On a side note my wife finally convinced me that since she is taking our girls to dance class on saturdays for the probable next few years and our son is only two that I should wait at least two more seasons before I start taking him to games >:(  So looks like no IIAC games for me for a few more years, good thing we now have internet coverage of games.

Doolittle,
They are never too young to start attending IIAC football games... :)

We take our 19 month old girl to sometimes 3 football games a weekend and she loves them.
As long as she doesn't start wanting to be a cheerleader we'll be alright.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Hmm, I think I will use you two as references in pleading my case with my wife!!!

Happy to help...I see young ones at the games all the time.

Doolittle,

My two grandsons age 2.5 and 1 come to most of the Central games.  It is some work to try and watch the games and take care of them.  But we try to find open space such as the end zone grass at Schipper Field and they sit there.  The love the time at the games.  They love to run on the field after the games.  IMHO never to early to start going to games.  If they learn early what to expect they can learn faster what to look for.  I think it is a personal choice as to what age to let them go to a game.  At 6-7 bucks for a ticket for you and free for them you haven't blown big bucks if you didn't see the whole game while you take care of him.  Good luck with the wife.

PS  It is bonding time for you and son as well.  How many parents don't have hobbies or things to do with their kids.  Time with the kids is the important thing.  It's all about the kids IMHO.

WAY too early to talk Wartburg and Central...only games that matter are this Saturday. If they both dont win then you can cut down on the meaning of that final game.

Floyd - I was impressed with Hawkins when he had time to get rid of the ball.  He's got a pretty good arm and didn't seem to force things.  He did a great job of putting it where either his guy was going to catch it, or it was going to be an incompletion, which as far as I'm concerned is the #1 job of the quarterback.  He made a few plays with his feet to buy himself time as well, he would really benefit from a more productive run game, but hey what QB wouldn't.

As for the Wartburg question, yeah I think they've got good schemes, but what I think really set them apart from 01 on is the explosivness of their front four.  They seem to always have guys that have an ability to play faster than their opponents.  Of course you have other schools like the Luthers and Simpsons that get their big boys in there and make plays that way too, but as an offensive player I always felt I had more of a chance to make plays when I wasn't worried about getting run down by a defensive lineman 8)

Thanks Former Ram!

I love it!  Cubs talk on the board.  SportsKnight...did you get a chance to order tickets for playoffs?  Maybe head to Chi-town and stand outside Wrigley on game day?  Go Cubs Go!

I don't think Wartburg beating Central or vice versa would be an upset.  If both of these teams keep playing the way they can play, when Nov. 10th rolls around whoever wins will probably not dominate the game and it will be small mistake here or there that is the deciding factor.

dbljay21 - Pollock was one hell of a LB back at Wartburg and quite the coach now up at Winona State I hear, looks like one of the brothers is still remembered back in Waverly (just pulling your leg W-H).  Speaking of coaching...how is Hefty as a coach?  I was never recruited by him, whoever the coach was right before him was the one who came to visit me in high school (I forget the name).

I just messaged my wife your arguments, and she gave me permission to take him to games (as long as it's not cold out).  Apparently you guys have more influence on her than I do.  Seems kind of odd but I'll take it.

I've been reading this board for a year now, and decided to finally chime in.  I enjoy the friendly banter and the occasional over reactions. Mostly, its a good way to keep up with all the games i can't see and listen to. As i've seen several of the same games as Floyd, I'd say his takes are pretty straight forward and on the mark.

Thanks Thunderbolt!  I will also be at Mount Vernon on Saturday, but perhaps just for as little as the 2nd half after seeing whether the Hawks can hold off Indiana.  I almost always see the Norse games in their entirety, but sometimes I get greedy when the Hawks and Norse are both playing in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area.  Hopefully the Hawks can take care of business and I can sneak out of Kinnick early.  I doubt the Hoosier game will be easy.

The Luther and Iowa schedules have set up well this year as far as allowing me to attend games for both teams.  I should be able to see parts or all of the Iowa home games and still see six whole Norse games and big chunks or all of two others (Coe and Cornell).

Now if the Norse and Hawks could start getting more wins. :)

Floyd you are having the best season so far are you?  That happens.  I used to be a die hard Hawk fan but when I started following the Dutch I can take a step back and follow them without being fully vested in the out come of the Hawk game.  If they win they win and if they don't then I don't get upset.

Doolittle,

As far as the cold goes the wife is right.  I don't think you can bundle them up enough to keep them warm when it gets cold out.  You might get 2-3 more weekends that are good for the little one.

It was great getting out to see another Wartburg/Luther game this year.  Even got myself a little bit of a sunburn down at Carlson stadium on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.  I know people (me included) keep comparing this Knights Defense to that of teams like 2002, and they just might be right.  Looked like the game would be a defensive battle until the Knights Offense pulled a little trickeration on 4th down to DE Eric Bruhn (kind of reminded me a Jeff Vories tackle eligible special) which set up a nice TD pass to Duchman that really put some push behind the Knights.  A couple of key INT's for Wartburg helped avoid Luther scores early on.

I was very impressed by the Luther Def. as well though....they really were hitting the Knights Offensive players hard.  Not sure how Wartburg's two first games went, but this one looked very physical.  A couple of big guys up front for the Norse.

Good to hear a solid perspective from someone at the game on the other side.  I really like how the guys are playing up front on the Norse DL, but the back end of the defense still needs to solidify.  Maybe getting S Trevor Theobald back this week (if he is back) might help the back end, and CB Mike Tangen is also capable of forcing turnovers.  Luther was trying to play defense many times with a LB covering the TE, so it is more than just the back end needing to make more plays.

I know all about Pollock...I do remember the name.  He was a player.  We were just slightly more worried about King and Zearley and Kelley.

Hefty is an incredibly smart coach. He has a great concept of offensive scheme and how to attack defenses which is one of the reasons he likes the no huddle attack...when you go into hurry up mode, it forces the defense to line-up quickly and "show their hand" and it also doesn't allow them to substitute very easily.  The thing that I liked most about Coach Hefty when he recruited me was the honesty and his coaching style.  And I really appreciated that honesty and style when I was coaching for him as well.  He isn't afraid to tell you what he thinks and you can get into an argument with him and not have it affect the working relationship.  He gets really intense during practice and often would jump into drills to raise the level of intesity during the practice.  I didn't realize how many of Coach Hefty's traits I have picked up until this year.  I owe a lot to Coach Hefty.  He knew that I wanted to coach when I was done playing and he gave me an opportunity while I was still in school at Luther.  You won't ever hear me say a bad word about him  :)

And it was Coach Brad Pole who recruited you...pretty unsuccessfully i guess  ;)
