doolittledog:  my son attended the B.V. football camp starting in 8th grade.  Sioux Falls College was the first to recruit (they didn't have a bad year last year).  We kept a log of all schools with interest - via telephone calls, letters, etc..  Buena Vista didn't call until the week after our son made the decision to attend Wartburg.   B.V. has a nice campus - but as stated often - lots of choices in the western 1/3 of Iowa.  NAIA schools were very aggressive in recruiting.

Here's my thoughts for the week, just wanted to see how everyone responded.

Central over BV - 30-7 - Central gets the running game going again and uses the pass accordingly.  The BV offense just won't be able to get started

Loras over Simpson - 24- 10 -  Loras is looking to prove they're for real after the heartbreaker against Central.  Simpson is still rather young and I think Loras will exploit that.

Luther over Cornell - 31-17 - I think Luther is able to right the ship with this one.  Cornell has to show me something.  I see a big day for Sherden

Wartburg over Dubuque - 27 - 17 - My game of the week.  I think Wartburg establishes the run early and exploits the Spartans with the play action pass.

I'm looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say.  Best of luck to all this week and I hope everyone remains injury free!

Looks very similar to my picks.  Minus the Simpson v Loras game.

I guess a Coe College education must be the way to go... ;)

I really think that Loras's injuries will have an effect on this game and after seeing Simpson play better in their last two games, I think this is one of their few chances for a win this year.  The ONLY hesitation I had in this one is that it is at the ROck Bowl.  Had this game been in Indianola, it would have been a no brainer for me to go with the Storm.

I'm not sure about how BV recruits now but when I was in high school my first recruiting letter came from BV when I was a sophomore. I'm not sure how aggressive they have gotten in the recruiting process but like everyone has mentioned before the attendance is way down.

Like I mentioned before I grew up about an hour from Storm Lake and I know the territory well. The problem isn't just Northwestern or Morningside. Sioux Falls has become a perennial powerhouse lately and this tends to attract more of the "northern" community's in Northwest Iowa.

I don't see anything glaring about your predictions.  I am inclinded to think the Wartburg UD score maybe low. I was thinking like 35-31

If is higher than this then I may be inclined to go with UD.  I just think UD's O is good enough for at least one score a quarter.  Now it the Wartburg D does their job then you could be right.

To answer a lot of questions how BV recruits I will try to explain it as well as possible.
Yes, BV does have a lot of problems with NAIA schools, not just in football, they struggle with every other sport also, usually morningside gets the kids because of hardcore recruiting strategies, or just acting like they care about the kid.  BV seems not to do that as well.  From my experiences for football now BV will take interest in high profile kids, send either the head or assistant coach, and call them, every other week to check up on them and then see what the kid thinks.  Then after January when they have no other commitments they began to panic calling and traveling to as many school as possible to try to get kids.  I am not sure if this is truw now, but that is what I saw.  They have some slim pickins up in NW Iowa, a lot of kids from E-burg, and some from Harland, and again some kids from a 30 mile radius, mostly 8 man players, and some from Minnesota.  And they are getting more MN kids, but whatever they are doing is obviously not working.  I don't believe they are going out trying to get 100 kids just to get em for the team, just trying to get the 20, 30 or ever how many they want to get, and again, NOT WORKING, 20 frosh coming isn't good, not at all, and with the turnover BV has with kids, there won't be much of the team in the future.

Um...Go BEAVERS

I've often wondered this:

True or False.  Will a school over recruit so as to not have a particular student/athlete playing for a rival team?

Gut check for those who really know.....

Luther over Cornell - neither of these teams are very good.  Luther has more talent, and Cornell is rested.  Makes for a close game.  Luther wins with a late score and tears the heart out of Heys and Ash.  27-24

Thoughts?  Reactions?

Howls of derisive laughter...

I am flattered that you consider my feelings.

Go Rams uber alles!!

From personal experience on the field the key to beating a superiorly talented (arguably) Dubuque team is to get them down early. They will tend to get on each other and not be supportive. This was always my opinion when I was on the field against them recently. If you let them hang around they stick together better as a team and are far more dangerous. I think it is imperative for Wartburg to jump on them early, score, or at least make some big plays on both sides of the ball to not give them any momentum.

Folks, this is an argument that proliferated for some time about the DBQ, but I think last year showed that generalization was not as reflective of the Spartans of last year and is certainly not this year.  Maybe it was true to some degree in the past...but I don't see it now.

The Simpson game has to count for something to dispell this...if this theory were accurate Dubuque should have rolled over after the first half but they clearly did not.

Dubuque has senior QB Jermar "Leonidas" Jackson who knows the system, and they have confidence from last year's performance to build upon.  This week is clearly their measuring point.  They beat the Kanigits last year and probably don't feel any Wartburg "mystique".

The Kanigits' coaches are smart enough to know they can't count on the Spartans to beat themselves.

It'd be a good game to see if I didn't have a game of more direct interest to attend.

I'm watching TV and the Wendy's commercial just came on where all the people are blindly jumping into the hole...

And I just read through Pick 'Ems with everybody jumping in....er...on the Norse bandwagon...hmmm.

I want a hot, juicy burger!

You'll find me at Ash Park on Saturday with my red pigtails on!  No, wait, I mean my Rams Horns!

3 days and 8 pages of literature later I'm finally caught up.   :)  This teaching stuff takes up too much time.  Just a couple topics to touch on.

Pettlon from Luther was a beast.  He was a FB when I was  LB and a LB when I was a FB so I saw plenty of him and more often than not he got the best of me.  He was probably one of the best athletes on the team and one of the best guys off it in that senior class.  You'd think transfering from a D1 school he would have a bit of an attitude but he didn't

As far as Hefty on the hot seat I don't see it.  First off because he is extremely popular at Luther.  Secondly, if the admins fired him after letting that BB coach go for so long there would be heck to pay.

I know this post is touching on old topics but I wanted to get my two cents in.

Floyd, when you posted about Davis and Jefferson, Mike had 989 yards.   :) I talked to Hefty that night and asked him if he knew MJ was only 11 yards away.  He did not.
