I'm watching TV and the Wendy's commercial just came on where all the people are blindly jumping into the hole...

And I just read through Pick 'Ems with everybody jumping in....er...on the Norse bandwagon...hmmm.

I want a hot, juicy burger!

You'll find me at Ash Park on Saturday with my red pigtails on!  No, wait, I mean my Rams Horns!

Heys,
You sound surprised that people are picking the 0-3 Norse over your 2-1 Rams?  Your Rams just have history working against them...they started the season the same exact way last year.  They beat Northwestern and Alma and then lost EVERY SINGLE IIAC CONTEST.  People just don't have any faith in your Rams because they haven't proved they can win in the IIAC with any consistency.  That's not bandwagon jumping...that's just history. And I know the Norse were only 2-8 last year, but one of those wins was against Cornell and they won 37-6.  And they were competitive in most of the losses last year.  And that is the same again this year...the only difference is that the Norse have lost to 3 ranked opponents.  Until the Rams win, people without attachments to them won't pick them to win.   And I didn't even know the Norse had a bandwagon... ;)
Go Norse!!!

Purple Heys

Actually its better if everyone picks against the Rams...gives Ash Park and I a chance to pick up a game in the Pick 'Ems.

Also, I am not arguing against history.  I may be picking with my heart, but as it has so often been said last year, hell, last game counts for exactly zip...unless there IS an associative property in football.

Either way, the jackhole karma snipers on this board can't seem to stand the fact that someone enthusiastically backs the Rams.  I have never seen someone admit to giving -K...only +K

I don't give any K...not my place to judge your allegiance...only my right to voice my opinion and disagree with yours.  Whomsoever you are, why not step up...we're all hiding behind nom-de-keyboards anyway.
You can't leave me....all the plants will die.

Question for Heys or Ashpark. If a guy got to town an hour or two before kick off, where would you go for a burger and an adult beverage? Preferably, somewhere that I can sneak a peak at some scores. Thanks

Can't argue with you following your heart, Heys...you will NEVER see me pick against the Norse  :)  Just can't do it.  I applaud people like you and Ash who support your Rams through thick and thin.  I am the same way with the Norse.  +K to you in my book for being loyal to your school  :)

And BTW, I love the movie quotes on your posts...that's a good one from the Princess Bride  ;D.  Keep 'em coming.  They make me laugh.
Go Norse!!!

Been wondering about losing my karma as well. Oh well, if it were worth money I'd be wondering a bunch more. I think I was in the 80s before the season started.

Walston,
If I really cared about winning the Pick Em's that much, I wouldn't pick Luther to win EVERY week... ;D
You are right about your picks though...it is easier when your team is winning a lot of football games  ;)  But you must be doing something right because there are always some "upsets" or "surprises" in the IIAC.  And those at the top must be picking the right upsets  :)
Go Norse!!!

Thunderbolt- I'd head down to Chameleon's on 1st St. downtown.  Good beer and a great patty melt.

As Ramfan said, I would go to chameleons. Not a very big place but sure has great food. The burgers are excellent. There are three other places to go, but one is in the process of being renovated and one was just sold to another owner so it hasn't been open due to changes and what not. The other doesn't serve food.

By the way I have always wondered about the Karma thing as well. Also, I have no problem with people picking against the Rams, but I just can't do it. I understand why people would pick against them though. The Rams gotta earn that respect and play with a lil chip on their shoulders. As Heys said eventually everyone picking against the rams will help our pick ems  ;D

Ahem, I think someone needs a refresher on who won the overall pick 'em (not just conference games) last year!

Ditto! I've been in the mix as well and, I believe, tied Dutchfan1 for the title two or three years ago.

Maybe all those MIAC fans are mad their teams lost so many games to IIAC teams this year and went on a karma war.  It would be interesting to know what is up with all of that.

MVbeev - very interesting take. When I was at Simpson, one of the women's teams took the same type of approach- go after the big guns, with no back-up plan. They were coming off a great season, but they didn't get those kids...next thing you know, they have a tiny freshman group on the team.

For the life of me, I'll never understand that approach. Yes, you need to go after the so-called big time players, but for DIII there are a ton of kids in Iowa that have to seek out IIAC schools and half the time the coaches feel they're wasting time dealing with those kids. I believe WH talked about having to notify coaches. I certainly wouldn't say that I was "highly recruited," but I was a three-year letterwinner and a two-year starter. If I remember correctly, we had 3 Shine Bowl guys on our team and only one made it through the first season. The other two were worthless. We had 4A all-conference guys that were absolutely worthless on the field. We had A-4A all-staters who never saw the field. Anyway, BV has probably learned a lesson.

From personal experience on the field the key to beating a superiorly talented (arguably) Dubuque team is to get them down early. They will tend to get on each other and not be supportive. This was always my opinion when I was on the field against them recently. If you let them hang around they stick together better as a team and are far more dangerous. I think it is imperative for Wartburg to jump on them early, score, or at least make some big plays on both sides of the ball to not give them any momentum.

Folks, this is an argument that proliferated for some time about the DBQ, but I think last year showed that generalization was not as reflective of the Spartans of last year and is certainly not this year.  Maybe it was true to some degree in the past...but I don't see it now.

The Simpson game has to count for something to dispell this...if this theory were accurate Dubuque should have rolled over after the first half but they clearly did not.

Dubuque has senior QB Jermar "Leonidas" Jackson who knows the system, and they have confidence from last year's performance to build upon.  This week is clearly their measuring point.  They beat the Kanigits last year and probably don't feel any Wartburg "mystique".

The Kanigits' coaches are smart enough to know they can't count on the Spartans to beat themselves.

It'd be a good game to see if I didn't have a game of more direct interest to attend.

Or you could look at how the Central game went for them and see my point exactly. They were up on us in 05 at halftime be we came back and put the game away quick, they were all over each other on the field blaming everyone. It made the game a bit easier. The first half they were playing team football though and it was harder to do much. I dont think you can generalize that they are better unless youve been on the field against them, that and they have basically the same guys as they have.

Floyd in Iowa City

As far as Hefty on the hot seat I don't see it.  First off because he is extremely popular at Luther.  Secondly, if the admins fired him after letting that BB coach go for so long there would be heck to pay.

I know this post is touching on old topics but I wanted to get my two cents in.

Floyd, when you posted about Davis and Jefferson, Mike had 989 yards.   :) I talked to Hefty that night and asked him if he knew MJ was only 11 yards away.  He did not.

Unlike the wrestlers, the old BB coach was there for a very long time without a very good or great season to show for it (that I can remember).  Unlike Tom Davis at Iowa, the coach also was not able to show any sort of consistency as far as being in the upper half of the league.  They were sort of entertaining when I was there (but as a team too cocky for being average), but some of those teams after I graduated were not very competitive (trying to be nice with how I phrase that).  I am playing wait and see on the new BB staff as well.

Luther Football needs to bounce back soon though.  Hopefully it starts in the next couple of weeks.

I knew Jefferson was right around 1,000 after a huge last game against Cornell, but I couldn't remember if he was just above or just below.  Those two were fun to watch almost every time I saw them that season except the B.V. game.  The Beavers had a pretty tough DL in 2003.
