Well, the first liar never has a chance.

Mrs. Warthog and I began taking Peacock/Warthog to Muskie football games when he was five months old.  Three years later Little Warthog was born and we kept our Friday night fall ritual of bundling up and heading out for football games.  When the boys were very young we missed a few away games, but once they got in the later grade school years we were generally on the road  Friday nights to Burlington, Clinton, Davenport or wherever the Muskies were playing.  With the exception of the Friday nights when we may have headed out to Wartburg for Kastle Kapers or to Lincoln for the Iowa State/Nebraska game we didn't miss a Muskie home game for 20 seasons or a Muskie road game for 10 seasons.   Of course during seven of those seasons at least one kid was in high school so we didn't miss any.

That my fellow football fans is a whole bunch of high school football, but it was some of the best family time we ever had.  For some of you younger parents on the board, I want to tell you this time slips away quickly.  Don't miss an opportunity to share this time with your children.  Be it hugging them close to your body to keep them warm on a frosty October evening or walking down the track with them on Senior night; these are special times.

Ditto and ditto, my pal Warty. We have a son and a daughter, and they both were in sports from kindergarten all through high school. There's nothing like it. Those are the best years, and they go too fast.

great site on the helmuts.  Son and I had a discussion on the current ISU helmuts and I realized that those were the ones the clones had when I was first in Ames.  That prompted me to recall how the Cyclones got their name.  I seem to recall that it was both a meterological event and football prowess.  I found this buried in the ISU site.  Under "A Brief View of Athletic Beginnings at ISU."

I also agree it would be cool to see a history of the IIAC helmuts and uniforms and maybe even the formation of a Hall of Fame Museum for the conference.  I have been trying to find an old friend  that made the ISU team his freshman yr (Fall of 75) who then went to either BV or Mankato St to finish playing.  He was from Denison.  His name is Greg Ryberg and I think he played FB.  Any BV players out there remember him?

I know this is way past talked about but I was with one of my Clients tuesday and she graduated from St. Olaf in 1956, and she remembers making posters and saying "If you can't go to college go to COE!"  So if saying about a school is over used, and out of date, it might be this one.  SO Kohawk fans I am behind you when you say that zinger on Coe is a little over done.

And on the subject of dissing your rivals, here it is Thursday already and based on what's on here, you wouldn't even know that Central and Simpson are rivals.  I'm all for civility, but rivalries are one of the things that make college football great.   We have a responsibility to insult one another.  This is weak but at least it is original.
The most frequently asked question, when Simpson plays at Wartburg is, "Why does Wartburg have that big M in the middle of their football field?"

Walston,

I think you are little hard on the football players dating your daughter.  Just cause you are afraid of the type of player you were does not mean that your daughter will date some one like you HAHA.  After all your wife choose you didnt she.  All football players are not bad.

Sorry this is totally random but Chris Fowler mentioned this clip about a fan going nuts during the Auburn/Florida game.  It  is pretty funny, lots of F-bombs, but funny how quickly a fan turns on a coach.

I am somewhat curious as to all of the Dubuque hype for this weekend.  Maybe I am crazy, but this match-up appears to favor the KoHawks in most aspects of the game.  Allow me to ellaborate.....

UD has been running the crap out of the ball and in recent games has used the run game for big plays.  Coe's strength on defense is against the run with 8 d-linemen that has starter skills, two of the fastest linebackers in the conference and a safety that comesup and plays the run as well as anyone.

UD gets explosive plays on offense with their speed.  Again, you will be hard pressed to find a faster defense in this conferece than at Coe.  Not only are they fast, but that speed forces a lot of turnovers.  Coe has the best TO margain in the conference thus far.

On the other side of that ball, Coe has improved every week offensively and have moved back to more of a power running game.  The emergence of some outside threats in the passing game will only help them.  UD has not shown the discipline on defense to not give up big plays which could allow for some big things for Coe.

I think this will be a great game.  But, I just had to analyze a little when seeing all of the people picking UD.  I don't buy the "they are coming off a tough loss so they will be ready to play." talk.  Recent history suggests that this the best time to play the Spartans, when things might be a little down.  However, I see this game as one of the true tests to see if they have really "turned the corner" as a program.  Winning when your backs are against it is a true sign of a champion.

Good analysis.  I think Dubuque could lose this weekend but you could still argue they have turned the corner as a program if at the end of the year they finish 7-3 or even 6-4.  Past UD teams would have gone in the tank and finished the year without another win.  I don't see that happening with all the seniors on this years Spartan team.

I guess for me the questions for this game are.  Dubuque is beat up on defense...is Coe strong enough on offense to score a bunch of points?  Dubuque has a strong offense...does Coe have a quick enough defense to counter that?  Did Wartburg figure something out about UD that Coe can pick up on film?  Does having a week off hurt or help Coe...they've had time to heal but will their timing be affected?

You make good points that a strength of Coe's defense is their speed so there might be one question answered.  The Dubuque defense lives with lots of blitzing relying on team speed in man to man coverage which can lead to getting burned if you have a good/quick offense.  There might be another question answered.

In my pick-ems I have Dubuque losing to Coe.  For a lot of the reasons you mentioned.  I do think Dubuque is slowly getting what they want.  That is respect from the conference.  They might not be winning the conference this season but what they want...and you could read their quotes from the Dubuque paper, is respect in the conference.  They don't want teams to snicker when they play Dubuque.  They want teams to know they have to spend a tough week of practice preparing for a tough team and if they don't bring their A-game on saturday Dubuque could beat them.

youcantseeme...here is what I am thinking about the UD/Coe matchup.

Dubuque is the first "test" for the Kohawks this season.  The Spartans played Wartburg last weekend and played well for the first half.  If the Spartans come out and play like they did in the first against Wartburg from the opening kickoff, I am not sure Coe will be able to respond like Wartburg did in the second half.  Sparty moved the ball pretty well against the Knights, who have the best defense in the league.  And the Spartans score more points than any team in the IIAC.   I know Coe has the best scoring defense in the IIAC but they haven't played a team with the offensive firepower that Dubuque has.  The Coe defense will definitely have their hands full on Saturday.  I am not even sure if BV and Simpson have any offense at all...  :D  It should be a great game.

doolittledog...good questions to bring up about the game.  I have Dubuque winning because they seem to "surprise" someone in the conference every year.  This year, I think it will be Coe.  Of course, that's just my opinion...I could be wrong  :)

UD beats Coe AND Central this year and finishes with 1 conference loss- My 2 cents.

BTW- New pictures of the new "W' are up. Looks pretty sweet. I can't wait to see it in a couple weeks.

Doolittle and Dbljay,

Good points both fellas.  I agree with everything you all are saying.  I do think that Dubuque is better, much better.  And, I do believe they might knock someone off this year.  I see Central as a more likely choice than Coe due to the defensive issues the Dutch have had this year (just an observation based on numbers, please don't burn my house down Dutch fans).

I think the week off helps the Kohawks as they are going to be much healthier than the Spartans.  I strongly agree with "Coe hasn't been tested early with good offenses."  However, I think they have been tested with good defenses and their offense has answered the bell so far (at least enough to get convincing W's).

If this one becomes a shoot-out, it will be in favor of the Spartans.  I just think that UD needs to get 24 points or more to win this one, and I don't see that happening.

Good points, good points...you are absolutely right about the shoot-out.  Dubuque seems much more proficient on offense than the Kohawks.  If the Coe defense can force some turnovers or hold Dubuque to field goals, they can win.  If Sparty is getting touchdowns, watch out because it could get ugly in CR.
