LAB:

It doesn't sound like gloating to me.  Your team came to play my team and your team kicked my team's rear end.  Enough said.

Maybe our wrestling coaches should have been in the football locker room.  They don't always beat Augsburg, but they by God don't take them lightly.

I'm in no way attempting to gloat, more than anything, I'm shocked as well.  From all info I had gathered, I did not see yesterday's outcome either.  But, as a point, the big points given up, that one other IIAC poster had referenced were to two teams that are nationally ranked, with many key returning players on offense, and to another team that has made it the the national playoffs recently.  I've said since the beginning, my Augsburg squad is still in the growing up phase.  We were bad the last three years (the years I played there), but fortunately have kept on working.  Coach Haege is starting to get some good players in there, and we've been making the weightroom a committed part of Augsburg football.  I wouldn't predict for our guys to win the National playoffs in the next few years, but we're becoming a better football team and program.  We just need some more success to build on, and yesterday's win is a huge boost for our team this year and for our program for the years to come.  Good job, Auggies, it was a win that we needed!

Nice to see that at least one MIAC poster that doesn't think that his **** don't stink ;D

Looking at the conference only stats on the IIAC web site it says that Jermar Jackson and Andy Tekippe on have played in two conference games.  Have they suffered injuries or missed games?

Just back to Pella from Chicago.  Let's recap yesterday's goings-on:

1.  Wartburg loses to Augsburg

2.  Iowa loses to Penn State

3.  Cubs get swept by the DBags.

All around, a pretty sh!tty day.  At least the Titans won today to somewhat salvage the weekend.

Obviously, I wasn't at the Wartburg game yesterday, but if the Knights did overlook Auggie, then this team needed a reality check.  I saw plenty of disappointing Wartburg losses while I was a student (Luther '05, Loras '04, BV '04, Coe '01 and '02, Cornell '01), but I don't think there was a single one in that group where Wartburg took the other team lightly.  Got outplayed?  Sure.  But failing to get ready for a weaker team is the worst thing you can do.  Let's not forget the 6 Ps:  Proper Preparation Pevents Piss Poor Performance.

Here's hoping this loss lights a giant fire under the Wartburg players and staff and they can take care of biz the next 5 weeks.

dbljay-I think we are working with a different type of kids-My sophs were up 35-0 at the end of the first quarter on Thursday night.

Yes we are...I am dealing with attitude problems, low attendance rates and a lot of kids playing football for the first time  :)

Picks:

Wartburg over Augsburg.  Not seeing a lot of chance of a Wartburg let-down here which is bad news for their non-conference opponent.  A wrestling duel would be a lot more interesting I am afraid.  38-10

I just wanted to throw my two cents in on Augsburg being the worst team or at least worst defense this year on the Wartburg schedule.  Throw out the wrestling records and rivalry in that sport as the gridiron Auggies have lost the last three games and given up 183 points in those losses!

Augsburg did beat the same Northwestern College team that Cornell also beat (winning by five points even though they forced six Northwestern turnovers), and the three MIAC losses are to solid to very good teams (Concordia, St. Olaf, and St. John's).  The scores are below:

9/8 Northwestern Bible College  W 31-26
9/15 St. John's  L 62-7
9/22 St. Olaf  L 70-31
9/29 Concordia  L 52-21

The main MIAC game this weekend is that St. Olaf at 5-0 travels to St. John's who is also 5-0 as usual.  The Ole Defense has not been up to the task against the Johnnies the previous two years.  The St. Olaf Offense is averaging 51 points a game while St. John's is averaging 40, but the St. John's coaching staff has been in a few a these big games. :D

I guess I was a little off on what I was expecting from Augsburg this weekend. ???  The St. John's-St. Olaf game sounded like it was a good game to be at.

Here's hoping that Van Rees gets healthy soon.  Is it VanRees or Van Rees?  I have seen it both ways on the Iowa Conference website and on the school website.

Luther 16  Loras 6

Norse defense was tight today on a VERY WARM afternoon.  Temp was 90 degrees at the end of the game.

Loras missed a field goal in first quarter, then after a long penalty in the Norse favor LC went on to get a Tyler Pease field goal.  3-0.  Second quarter, Luther two field goals, one set up by a pass play covering nearly 60 yards.  LC 9-0.

Third quarter.  No score.  Loras had difficulty moving the ball.  Luther defense played strong.  Luther tried one field goal but missed from 16 yd line.  Fourth quarter:  Luther intercepted a pass and ran in for TD.  Luther 16  Loras 0.  Loras scored TD on pass from 6 yd line.  Luther 16  Loras missed extra pt 6.

Sherden was held to under 100 yards.  Loras QB throws a nice tight ball but couldn't get receivers open until late in game.  Luther's front defense played well and hurried him with several sacks and multiple "in the grasp".  Loras' #30 Brock Hall (linebacker) played tough all day.

The heat on the field must have bothered both teams.

The heat did not bother either defense too much from my view, but the wind made a difference at times.  Sherden looked less and less explosive to me as the game went on, but make no mistake in that the Duhawks Defense controlled the line of scrimmage.  The Norse Defense held Loras under 200 yards total offense and forced Loras into a 13-33 passing performance with 3 INTs.  That is three solid to very good performances in a row for the Norse defenders.

Cody Webb is still playing pretty well on the DL.  Ditto for Brant Rost at LB.  In fact, LB went from being mediocre at best last year to much improved with the combo of Rost, Hendrickson, and Klein (Klein was a FB last year).  The Loras RBs looked healthy to me, but both running games were destroyed by defensive penetration and very little wiggle room.

The only normal success in the Norse running game was when RB Adam Lamos was in the game and running the ball between the tackles.  He had only 8 carries this week after getting 16 against Cornell.

Tyler Bass had a breakout game as a punt returner and also had a nice kickoff return.

Duhawk Brock Hall had another great game, but he got a personal foul call on him and doubled the yardage against him by getting an unsportsmanlike call right after that.  That defense played about as well as the Knights did in Decorah a few weeks ago.

Great game for the Norse Defense, but now Hawkins and the Beaver passing game is coming to town.  Big game for the Norse.

I haven't seen St. John's this year, but I have seen ranked teams in Wartburg, St. Olaf, and Central.  Of the three, Central has the best QB (playmaker, not stats as each system is different), RB (if he gets healthy again), and the best special teams play (consistency).  Wartburg was the best defense of the three.  St. Olaf has by far the best WRs and passing attack with a very good OL.

Anyone have any information on Suckow?  His continues to have a tough go of it at RB.

Floyd,

That surprises me somewhat about Hall.  From what I have seen he has always been a class player the games we have been in with him.  A hard clean hitter.

In the d3football.com top 25 poll.  Central is ranked 6th.  Wartburg is in at 17 after their loss to Augsburg so not too bad there.  Coe isn't ranked but did receive 2 votes.  Dubuque did not get any votes...after beating Coe.

DutchFan2004

Doolittle,

I noticed the same.  I found it odd that they would vote for Coe for 2 points and not give UD any.  The lone Coe voter must have thought that the UD win was an upset is all I can think of.  If you look at it that way it may make some sense (I don't see it) but to that voter it must make sense.  I really looked at that game as a toss up.  Sounds like both schools had their chances at the W but UD made a big play with the blocked punt and then came up with a big INT in OT.

Yea I saw that Coe got votes but not Dubuque, I had the same thought.

Wartburgs D gives up 390 to Augsburg, 123 on the ground. Their offense also got out gained by a supposedly far inferior Augusburg team...no offense to them Augie, congrats on the victory!  As for Van Rees...him leaving the game shouldnt have affected much, after all they do have RB/WR all star Neil Suckow, but he only averaged 1.5 ypc. The stats baffle me, especially blowing a 13 point 4th quarter lead. The Knights need to get things righted quick!

Luther playing well...could very easily win out. Loras playing Wartburg next week will probably not be a cakewalk for the Knights and Cornell draws the tough task of trying to keep up with Dubuque. Not to mention the game in Pella. Should be a fun week!

Unfortunately, one voter felt like Coe was worthy of a 24th-place vote and nobody voted for Dubuque. Such is life with 25 voters. :)
