Weren't they saying that last year Wartburg would not have made the playoffs even if they had won against Dubuque?

So if Wartburg had gone 9-1 with their only loss being in OT against a team that was 10-0 and would not have made the playoffs I would think Dubuque would not make it going 9-1 with their one loss being by 17 against a team that went 9-1 with their only loss beings against a sub-.500 team.

What if we end up with 4 teams all at 6-2???

Pat Coleman

Every year is different. Last year two 9-1 teams did not get in -- that isn't guaranteed to be the case every year.

So last week Dubuque was the KoHawks homecoming opponant.  This week Dubuque is Cornells homecoming opponant and in 2005 Dubuque was Cornells homecoming opponant as well.

Have teams been loading up on Dubuque as a homecoming opponant recently figuring they had a good chance of winning their homecoming game against a bottom feeder or is it just luck of the draw???

I think some schools operate that way.
When I was in school we played Luther, BV where Dr. Tyler Molstre saved homecoming and beat Central my jr year and lost to Coe my sr year.
I think Wartburg played Simpson for homecoming in '03 (1-2 in IIAC)
Don't remember who in '04 but I think Coe in '05. I don't remember who it was last year. A little help?

Upset of the week-
Coe over Central.
The end of the year shakes out like this
UD beats Central as well
Wartburg beats Coe and Central
along with, of course, Loras this week.
Wartburg goes to the playoffs as the conf champ and UD makes it as an at-large.
For some reason I really like that UD squad right now.
Wouldn't be surprised to see them seeded higher in the playoffs.

Interesting perspective, Walston...out of curiosity, though, what exactly do you like about UD?  I think UD is a very good team and that your scenario is completely possible.  I am just curious about what you like about the UD squad, and also, why you think Central is going to lose two games before the end of the year???

Actually, Central would have 3 losses in my "world"
Coe, UD, and Wartburg.
I think had injuries not mounted up for UD against Wartburg, and the type of day that it was, favored Wartburg.
UD runs the table.

Call it the "Protestant Trophy"

Whatever happened to the battleaxe (appropriate weapon for a Norseman) that they used to play for back in the 1960s?  I would be for the two schools playing for some sort of trophy again.

I have always thought that the Norse-Knights game should be near or at the end of the season.  I know the Knights-Dutch game has been huge in recent years in football, but Wartburg could play Luther and Central at the end of the season the way that Iowa has played Wisconsin and Minnesota at the end of the year for much of the 1990s and 2000s.

Is there a reason the Wartburg game has been so early in the season for most of the last several years?

I think all kinds of scenarios are plausible right now.  I wouldn't be surprised if Luther, after starting 0-3 ran the table.  I could see Central lose to Coe, UD and Wartburg just as easily as I could see them beating all 3 of those teams.  I could see Dubuque beat Central and then follow that up with a loss to Loras.

I could go on and on and they would all make sense to me.

What are the tie-breakers?  I realise that if 2 teams are tied at 7-1 in the conference the tie-breaker would be head to head.  What happends in 3 or 4 way ties?

Was it Luther in 2004 and last year?  The crowds for Luther-Wartburg games are pretty big no matter what no matter the records or where it is at, but it seems like the last two trips to Waverly have had very festive halftimes of honoring past athletic teams like all of the baseball conference champions over the past 10 years.  Plus I have run into a bunch of Wartburg people who are my age.  They could be coming back just because it is a rivalry game.

It was a week 4 game last year (Wartburg 28 - Luther 17  >:()
It was also a week 4 game in 2004 (Wartburg 16 - Luther 7  >:()

.....speaking of trophies.....Luther  and Wartburg did have a trophy (a battle axe) that originally went to the winner of the football game, then it changed to the winner of "all sports".  That was in the 50's and possibly into the 60's.

It originated because their were various pranks (such as stealing the Wartburg suit of armor) were perpetrated by each school.  Seems to be lost now.

Not sure a "Protestant trophy" would do the trick.

Does BV have a "rival"?  They are out there in western Iowa with no IIAC school geographically close enough to call a "rival" but I would I like to see the other 4 rivalries create a traveling trophy.

I guess we don't have a particular rival but I've heard that in the past it was the Dutch and as of late I know it has become Wartburg.

Luther in '04 and Loras last year.  Its Coe this year.  Few years back ('03 or '04 if I remember right), President Ohle told me that if were up to him, Homecoming would always be a big game, regardless of the time of the season.  But some of the folks in the Alumni office at that point made it very clear that they wanted Homecoming to fall sometime between September 20 and October 20 every year.

The last week of the season would be a great week to have "rivalry week"...Coe vs. Cornell/Central vs. Simpson/Dubuque vs. Loras and Luther vs. Wartburg.  BV could have the bye or play Waldorf that weekend.  I think you would see a lot of interest throughout the IIAC for a rivalry week.

I just heard today that Cornell and Coe are going to try to get a traveling trophy started either this year or next. Can anyone at Coe clarify this ? I definitely think that this being one of the oldest rivalries on this side of the Mississippi it would only fit to have some kind of traveling trophy. Of course this hasn't been much of a rivalry the past 6-7 years. Hopefully that is going to change soon.  ;D
Coe has been proposing a traveling trophy for about five years. Cornell has shown no interest.

Well I heard this from a Cornell source so maybe they are all for it now?? It wouldn't suprise me with Coach Dillon and having a different AD now that will happen soon. Here is a question for some Coe and other Cornell people, what should it be called??  Ramhawk trophy?? Lincoln highway trophy?

How about a Lincoln Highway Bell that goes with the winning team from year to year?
