Lance--from seeing all those banners in the Knight Gymnasium, I think the sports you listed will always be strong at Wartburg. Having grown up 45 minutes from Waverly, I know for a fact that Wartburg will always be able to recruit that area hard, and it's always had good sports. We'll see.
Oh yeah, I voted for Loras too on that poll. Watch out for the DuHawks!

Pakk

That is the most ridiculas poll I have seen.  How can Coe and Central be included in a poll where they are a surprise to win the conference?  Coe shared the title last year and Central has been the msot dominant team in that conference for decades. It's like saying that it would be a surprise if St. Johns wins their conference.

lorbec47

Of course it would be a surprise if Central wins the conference. 5-5, 6-4. You have to be realistic. Yeah, I said Loras, but they've never won it, so they'll have to earn it. Everyone in the league has to earn it. I know Central has the tradition, but Wartburg is the team to beat.

Pat Coleman

'None of the above' should be an option.

Whoa, miss a day and you miss a lot on the IIAC chat board. For once, it's not me being accused of wearing "crimson blinders." I was on the sidelines of last year's Coe-Dubuque debacle and I can honestly say the officiating was a factor. However, I think Coach Raeburn's temper may have gotten the best of him that day, which may have influenced the officiating. In the end though, it's a 60-minute game. Coe had plenty of chances to score and take the officiating out of the equation, but didn't get it done. At the end of the day, the Kohawks have only themselves to blame for that loss.

But that one's behind us (except for a little payback headed Dubuque's way on Oct. 22). Looking ahead to the coming season, I was most encouraged by what I saw at yesterday's scrimmage vs. UW-Platteville. Coe scored on four of 10 possessions and the defense forced four turnovers while allowing just two scores. I don't think the quarterback battle has been decided yet, although it can't be too tough to find someone capable of handing the ball off to Neil Suckow and Ashton Northern -- the best backfield tandem in the league. Opponents will see a lot of #6 and #24 this year.

That must have been a good scrimmage to see. Is UWP as good as they were last year? That Tekippe kid was pretty good in high school. How is he looking?

lorbec47

Pat--Is there a hidden meaning behind that 'none of the above' statement? Not that it shouldn't be.

Pakk

I still do not believe anyone would be surprised if Central would win the conference.  I agree they might not be the favorite this year, as they were for 30 of the last 35 years, but saying it would be a surprise is a stretch.

Pat Coleman

Well, yeah, the thing is "could surprise" -- some of those teams could win the title but it wouldn't be a surprise. Others could be a surprise but aren't title contenders in my mind.

Because of the way it's worded, I would vote none of the above. But it isn't an option.

The Iowa Conference coaches have spoken, and the favorite to win the IIAC title in 2005 is...

Wartburg!

The Knights collected 70 points overall, including 6 first-place votes.  Luther was 2nd with 62 points and a pair of first-place nods.  Coe came in at #3, earing 60 points and a single vote for first-place.

Yeah, the DuHawks got a 7th place vote...Of course they were picked 3rd last year and what did it get? Preseason polls are nice, but everyone still has to show up every weekend.

KooKoo--man get off it, Wartburg is dominant. It's like all these Iowa fans, "Co-Big Ten champs." Wow, congrats...who still gets the nod, and ultimately the playoff big? The head-to-head conference CHAMP. Don't get me wrong, not a Wartburg fan, but face the music.

lorbec47

Sure thing, CooCoo. Yeah, your 2002 "automatic" qualifier. Wasn't that a "Tri-Champ?" I believe it was. And this might be a football board, but they are the most dominant team in the IIAC from top to bottom in athletics. And when was the last time Wartburg was 5-5??

Hey Dutchfan- I'm no Beaver fan! You are right, that is the worst mascot and deserves some ripping! I am a Storm fan!! (mascot is the Thundercat!!!)

Lance Harbor

Hey all,

Once again, just like last year, geography and dumb luck put me not too far away from getting to see the very first game of the season in all of college football.

Eastern New Mexico University and Central Arkansas duked it out at War Memorial Stadium in downtown Little Rock in front of 7,500 roaring fans.

Everyone was geared up and..........(drum roll)

.....it was a complete blowout!!
Central Arkansas  51
Eastern New Mex    0

Oh well, it was a little anti-climactic, but nonetheless, football is here....it is here indeed!!  Barely a week until the kickoff of D-III ball.

Best of luck to everyone and enjoy the season.  FOOTBALL IS BACK!! WooHoo!!
