Nice to have an all american on the board posting.  Have a little +k for joining the board.  You arent the only o lineman.  Walston Hoover and you will have many of the same insights.

Purple,

The game between our teams is this week but I just cant bring myself to get into a mud throwing match.  I have never talked smack in my life before a game.  I guess I don't like eating crow after my team suffers a loss.  So I guess I just let the team do the talking on the field.  Are you coming to Pella this week.  If you do dont forget to visit the bakeries on the square.  Dutch letters and puff pillows are my favorite.  You should try some.  They are the treat of Pella.  If you do come have a safe trip and if you are in the way of the fires I hope they miss you.

OK...I'm going to try to draw you in...

The Rams have more sensible shoes than the Dutch...I mean, c'mon...no wonder Schuring has ankle problems trying run in wooden clogs!   :D

Purple Heys,
It's good to hear you're in the clear, but I'll continue sending good thoughts to all those affected. I once lived in Oceanside so I know the area well. It's a shame. San Diego is my favorite US city. Godspeed my friendly rival.
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

We'll be thinking about you and keeping you in our prayers.  Best of luck,  I'm sure all of us on the IIAC board hope winds continue to blow in a favorable direction for you.

Thanks all!  So far us O-siders are blessed with favorable winds.

Man!  The news is pretty grim elsewhere...500 homes and 100 businesses destroyed in San Diego.

L.A. back hills area is on fire too...Mel Gibson and Frazier Crane have had to evacuate Malibu.  Pepperdine U is threatened at this point.

100 foot high flames jumped over a 10 lane freeway...incredible.

Hoping the news improves tomorrow.  Hug your kids and call your folks to tell you miss them...just because.  Don't wait for a catastrophe like this.

does Pella have a good watering hole with some good food? I always heard that Pella does not have any bars.
Best bet would likely be Dr. Salami's.  Pretty popular postgame hangout, but they aren't open for a pregame lunch.  Only a few blocks north of Central's campus and pretty accessible from the roads that bring you into or out of town.
Other than that, I hear there's a decent sports bar out at Bos Landen Golf Course, but that'd be a hike out of your way.  There's another place that is going in just off of Highway 163 on the west edge of town, but I don't think its going to open until after Thanksgiving.

Wikipedia says the 2006 estimated population of the Cedar Rapids three-county metropolitan area is 249,320.

Can you imagine telling everyone of those folks to pack up and leave.  Right now.

The mind boggles.

Its a good thing that I am not around to watch Central's season. I'm only 23 and might have suffered a heart attack by now. Great win by the Dutch Saturday. Lets just hope they can continue to win for another few months. I liked the comment by the UD HC about being past the point of moral victories. You gotta like it when a program realizes that it can hang with the big boys but that it needs to win those games.

Got a chance to watch the Central-Simpson game (albeit a few weeks late) on DVD yesterday. Is Simpson attempting to create a Florida style offense? The motion counter play they ran absolutely killed the Dutch, but the rotating QBs was interesting too. Can't wait to see the UD DVD. Congrats to Connell for IIAC POW.

Haven't been posting as much because the hooligans are at it again with the end of Dennis Radaman. Hopefully the winter kicks in and it gets quiet. Ash Park, as far as watering holes are concerned, Doc Salami's is good and only a 3 minute and 37 second jog from campus. Decent selection but it can be a little crowded if there are a lot of people. Woody's is down town behind the Pizza Ranch (and conveniently located less than 200 meters from the Pella City Jail). Another good selection and not as crowded. Only a 5 minute jog from campus. Haven't been to the one out at Bos Landen, but I've heard pretty good things about. DutchHawk and Rhino_05 can also attest to the popularity and selection of the establishments of ill repute.

3 minute 37 second jog for in their mid-twenties paratroopers in the best shape of their lives.  30 minute walk for dangerously out-of-shape almost 40 year olds!!!

Heys,
I will send some thoughts and prayers out your way...I do a lot of business out of Oceanside, so I am paying close attention to what is going out there.  Hopefully today will be better than yesterday.  Have a little +K on me... :)

Having to listen to the 5 idiot, fat Central fans behind me all day was a real treat. Yelling about how the "Rhinos" were playing "Central football." Hey fellas, I hope a couple of you read this: SCHURING HAD 65 YARDS ON 25 CARRIES!

You are way off base on this one, Chief.  Yelling supportive comments to a young offensive line makes someone an idiot?  It's no mystery Central has struggled to run the ball all year, and two (admittedly fat) former o-linemen were just trying to encourage and fire up the young o-line.  I'm not sure why this ruffled your feathers.  Maybe the fact that the 65 YARDS ON 25 CARRIES was enough to beat your team?

I don't recall anyone yelling about playing "Central Football."  I do know that "UD Football" was used to describe the gift 1st down and 30 yards that resulted from consecutive unsportsmanlike conduct calls on the Spartans.  If this got under your skin, was it because you are sick of it as a UD fan? I know I'd be frustrated if my team gave the opponent new life on a drive and 30 yards, only because they couldn't keep their composure.

The UD contingent in the front few rows of those bleachers showed a lot of class, I suppose?  Mocking a 7 year-old kid for cheering for his older brother on the field?  Calling out individuals by name and/or number, saying they suck?  Real original.  Oh, and the ever-popular (and decidedly premature) "over-rated" chant.  Real classy.  Which one were you, lorbec?

Bleacher antics aside, it was great game to watch.  Both teams fought extremely hard and had multiple opportunities to win.  Jackson is a stud, no doubt about it.  It's too bad he and UD won't have the opportunity to make some noise in the playoffs.  Central finds a way....again.  On to the next week.

Welcome aboard Rhino...its nice to get new additions to the board.  Looking forward to reading some of your insights and opinions  :)

Airborne Dutch

Oh no, the jog in question took place a week before I joined the Army, well before the 6 mile a day for 3 weeks at Airborne school and the 3-4 mile run every other day at Ft. Bragg. You must factor in, however, that most of those runs to the bar took place after some mild to moderate alcohol consumption and two things could have happened : A. my vision was impaired enough that I misread my watch or B. the alcohol dramatically increased my stamina and adrenaline output. Either way, neither bar is too far from campus.

Been to Woody's a couple times. For a few hours, you forget you're in Pella.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

doolittledog

There's a Woody's in Cedar Rapids that I guess you could call a "Gentleman's Club"

I'm thinking the Woody's in question in Pella is a whole different place...just a guess.

I wonder if the lack of adult drinking establishments in Pella directly corresponds to their football success???  Could be, but probably not.
