Isaacson threw a pass to a wide open Brian McIntire who returned it 96 yards for a TD.

That was quite a play to see!

Yeah, if you were in Black and Orange that day. As for Pella not having much to do, DSM, Ames, and Iowa City are only about a 45-90 minute drive away

Walston,

It was three blocked punts and a kick return by Brett Doud.  The special teams were very special that day.

In -04, Wartburg got out to a 14-0 lead. It was 14-10 at half and that was the final score.
Central had 26 rushes for -8 yards.
IIRC, It was VERY cold that day and I was happy to be calling the game from the booth.
It was the Dan Hammes show with 34 carries for 174 yards. Wartburg dominated that day but threw 3 picks.
Then-freshman Nick Weber made two huge plays in that one, returning a fumble for a TD on Central's first drive and breaking up a 4th and Goal pass in the final minute to preserve the win.  Central's only TD came on a 69 yd TD pass on the first play of a drive.  Besides their field goal and Wartburg finishing off one drive, that was it for offense.  Marked Wartburg's 4th straight win over Central.  The seniors that year were pretty geeked about that...no other class had gone unbeaten against the Dutch since the mid-80s I think.  OneArmedScot (what ever happened to that guy) and Dave Devine were also in attendance, and I met both for the first time that afternoon.  That was also the game in which my avatar pic was taken.
That was a good day for Wartburg all around.  Both XC teams won conference titles on Central's course and the soccer teams also did fairly well in the conference tournament IIRC.  Was a very windy day, but not all that cold to the best of my recollection.  Chilly, but nothing out of the ordinary for Iowa in November.

The '03 game was colder as I remember it.  Good win for Wartburg there.  Clinched a perfect regular season and snapped Central's streak of winning seasons in the process.  One very vivid memory I have from that one was during the post-game celebration when the Wartburg seniors were taking pictures with the IIAC trophy.  Everybody is in pose mode and the cameras are snapping away when all you hear is Vinny King's southern drawl telling one of the mothers to take the lens cap off.

'05:  Miserable all the way around.  Chilly and dreary day, but when it started to rain it made it almost unbearable in the stands.  Wartburg's special teams play didn't help matters.  I don't think the Knights had ever seen the punt block that Central had schemed up for that game, and the Dutch ran it very well.  Toss in a heavy dose of Vance Schuring and a return TD and you get the most lopsided home loss for the Knights in Walston Hoover's history.

I was not aware that all of those were so close.  I didn't even know there was any more to Iowa past Decorah...that is all I knew as a kid.  I think it's a definite advantage to have a smaller town so it is safe, but yet still have access to bigger cities close by for the college kids.

It just occured to me that Coe has a former Cornell player as a coach, and a transfer from Cornell as a player currently.  Aaron Hadenfeldt played at Cornell if my source is correct.  It isn't quite the transfer of Suckow but what do people from Cornell or players for Cornell think of this playing a good DE and if i saw correctly now a tightend also.

Have to correct you SK.  Practiced against that punt block all week.  Central pulled the left tackle and his shoulder dislocated and couldn't get his block >:(.  After that the big Mo fell toward the Dutch and the punt team fell apart. Not this year.

Is the BV Phelan related to Wartburg's freshman starting QB Justin Phelan?
I see they are both from Lemars.

They're brothers.  Wartburg's Phelan is a better runner, having spent most of his high school career as a fullback, while BV's has a better arm.  Justin moved to quarterback his senior year after Brandon graduated.  Both have the potential to be successful in the IIAC, and neither are afraid of hitting/being hit.  I remember seeing Brandon run upfield to block for the ballcarrier on several occasions during JV games last year because BV didn't have a JV fullback.

The former player who is now a coach is a good friend of mine. He was a good player at Cornell and from what I hear is doing a good job at Coe. As far as Hadenfeldt goes he took a year off then went back to school at Coe. He left right before the 06 season started for multiple reasons and at that time his thought was that he was done with college. When he decided to go back to school I think he was missing football and the college life all together. He is a solon boy and I believe Coe has 5 or 6 Solon kids(probably one more after Yordi works on Raeburns house this summer  ;) ) who all played with Hadenfeldt so I think that had a little something to with him choosing to go to Coe. He is now playing both ways from what I hear. Hadenfeldt is a good player and a good guy but this week he is just another kohawk SOB.

Ahhh....what a nice, long weekend in the mountains.  I see that I missed quite a bit and I am going to have to do a lot of reading to catch up.  Congratulations to the victors from the weekend  :)

Old guys like me have weather web-sites on our favorites list.  Saturday forecast for Waverly calls for temperature to be a balmy 56 degrees.  It unforetunately also predicts a 30% chance for rain early in the day increasing to 60% as the day wears on.  Even though the game is a "turf" who will benefit from wet conditions?

As to this good city - bad city conversation; The Warthogs lived in St. Louis before moving to Iowa.  Iowa has nothing compared to M. L. King Drive or the cross river community of East St. Louis.  There is something to be said for culture diversity in a community like Storm Lake.  Unfortunely it is back breaking, low salary packing plant jobs that bring the diversity.  This isn't always a great way for diversity to start.  These poor souls come into a community, they look different, they speak different, they live in inadequate housing and they smell bad if they stop for groceries on their way home from work.  This changes after a few years.  People move away from those jobs and move into more traditional situtions.  Families begin to grow and like other parents these "new" people want good schools, safe play grounds and a community they can be proud of.  The great part of having a community with a heavy Mexican and Viet Namese population is great restaurants.  They don't always look the best but they sure serve great food.  With both cultures families are important.  This also contributes to some great changes as time moves on.

Looking forward to attending the Wburg/Central game this week....it has been WAY to long.  Anyone have any additional info about the availability of Suckow and Yordi?  It would be horrible to beat the Dutch at half strength.   Another random question for anyone who has seen Wartburg play this year....how much do they run the "rocket screen?"  For Central's case...I hope they figure out how to defend that better they have in the past.

Warthog...thanks for the words about our sideline...we got that taken care of.  Nothing like mass conditioning for not bringing out the water!

Warthog, what a great post.  Great job of describing how things will probably develop with the new immigrants to the Storm Lake area.  And also a good comment about the resteraunts.  My parents lived in California before I was born and to this day my dad does not like to go to area mexican resteraunts because he says he got spoiled eating a "real" mexican places from his time in Cali.  And, like you said, his favorite was a hole in the wall place with a hand poured cement floor over dirt, nothing to look at but it had fantastic food.  My family lived in Webster Groves, MO before moving up here.  What part of St. Louis did you guys live? Maybe my thoughts that I have never been in a bad area during my travels around Iowa comes from the fact I lived in St. Louis untill the age of 14.

Agree with doolittle here, pretty solid post by Warthog.  By the way, I'm heading over to Waverly this weekend to catch the game and also some state playoff action, but does anyone know of some really great places to eat in Waverly?  Of course there's the O.P., one of my personal favorites, but any other places you guys would recommend?

Postgame, the OP or the Fainting Goat. Joe's is good for bar food too. If you like chain restaurants there is an Applebees now on the south side of town, and a couple good Chinese places.
There is a tailgate on Saturday put on by Tyson with pulled pork, pork chop, and ribeye sandwiches.
I'll be at Texas Roadhouse postgame. Can't make a trip back up to NE Iowa without throwing some peanuts on the floor.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships
