Question for anyone who would like to answer.....How does the number 12 team in D3 stay home and teams that aren't ranked get into the playoffs?? Do rankings mean anything when it comes to selection time??  Just a little confused....
Rankings in the Polls, either D3football.com or the AFCA. have absolutely no impact on the determination of seeds by the Selection Committee.

Here is the FAQ from the front page about the way that the bids are given.

Ok let's get this out of the way first. The block was legal, it should have been a no-call, and he never had control of the ball to spike it.

Now, congrats to Central. They were not the better team, they just played better when it counted. I hope they reverse their playoff history and make a huge run.

And let me be the first to say.....

I dont know about the block, I was on the wall even with where that block occured and it looked like an easy call to me. He definitely hit Blythe in the back and he landed on his front. That is usually one of the biggest determinants used by referees to call a block in the back. Its not like it matters though.

Thank you to everyone who responded to my question....Now Good Luck Dutch make some noise so we can perhaps someday have two teams from our league make the playoffs.

Your own bracket! Nice work, Central.

I don't know anything about Olivet, but I'm sure you guys can take them. I hope Connell and Schuring will be 100%.

I'm sorry the Knights didn't make it to the playoffs as well. Whitworth from the NWC really got hosed!

Few things from yesterday's game...

First and foremost, I think it is truly unfortunate that we are talking about questionable calls after such a well-played game.  Both teams made some great plays and every fan that was at the game got their four or five dollars worth.  I would have loved to see Wartburg win (sending both teams to the playoffs) and would have been happy to see Central win, but would much rather have had one team win more decisively.

That said, I can't help but disagree with some of the calls that were made.  I'll be the first to admit that I didn't have the best view of Connell's arm on the last play (and don't know if I would have been focused on his arm even if I was closer) and I couldn't hear when the whistle sounded.  But it sure looked like a fumble to me.  And to the guy that said the Wartburg linemen were getting in a cheap hit on Connell by playing past the whistle, I'm guessing you never played defense, especially defensive line.  You're taught to play by sight on defense, and when you see the football fall out of a guy's hand in that situation, you're going to make a play for it.  The block in the back was a blown call.  I think that rule needs to be revisited to make a clear policy in regards to plays like that one where a player is blocked from the side.  From where I was at, I don't think I can disagree too much with the pass interference call, other than to argue whether or not you throw the flag in that situation.

I've been a ref and an umpire before, and I know that you try to make your best judgement in some very tough situations, but I still say it is wrong to take the game out of the players' hands.  There were only 8 penalties called in that game.  That's probably the lowest number I've ever seen in a game.  Were more than that committed?  You can almost be sure of it.  So when the refs were letting them play for most of the game, why throw the flag in that situation?  You just made a kid a goat by calling that penalty.  As great a player as Nick Weber is, he will undoubtedly always look back on that game and wonder what might have happened if that flag doesn't get thrown.

Weber made a couple of real nice plays, but at the end of the day, he just wasn't tall enough to cover Smith all the way.  I don't remember seeing any plays were Weber got "burned."  But its a game of inches, and when a WR is four or five inches taller than the CB, it creates a match-up problem that is tough to overcome.

Let's call a spade a spade:  Wartburg could have put the game out of reach by halftime.  As much as they were shutting down the Central offense in the first half and as good of field position as they had, Wartburg probably should have scored three times.  But you have to give a ton of credit to Central's defense for stiffening at the right times.  We joked on the air about there being an invisible wall at the 25 yard line that Wartburg couldn't get through.  Well, that wall was the Central defense.  Wartburg ran 24 offensive plays (not counting punts) in Central territory, and only six of those came from inside the 25.  Just three of those were inside the ten.

Like I said, well played game all around.  Both coaching staffs have a lot of respect for each other and the Wartburg guys will be rooting for Central to do well.  But its just a damned shame that the IIAC didn't get two teams in and that we have to spend so much time talking about the refs after a game like that.

Its true, when it comes down to it the refs didnt affect the outcome of the game in saying that Central would not have won if those flags hadnt been thrown. Every game could go slightly differently depending on what flags were thrown when, but thats part of the game, its human. Like sportsknight said the Knights had the opportunity to put the game away but the Central D was too tough. They stuck around and put 3 scores up and walked off back to back to back champions. Great work, now lets get to business against Olivet.

The better team plays the best when it really counts...and that is a scientific fact!  Thus Central is the better team.

What a great bracket for the Dutch. I'm one that likes to think the west bracket is always loaded. Shipping out Whitewater and bringing in Olivet and Concordia changes that a bunch. Add in a #3 seed that should be a 14 point plus underdog to Eau Clare, and you have five teams that must love there chances of getting to the final four.
I know I shouldn't get ahead of my self, but I will. I think Eau Clare and Bethel should be a great game and won't be the least surprised to see Eau Clare win. Home field in the 2nd round should be huge for the Dutch. Redlands with the travel issues and St Johns just doesn't seem to be the same team on the road as they are at home. A great opportunity for Central, and we've seen all year what they do when opportunity knocks.

In response to the Beake cheers and antics during the games, (AD) Dorenkamp is a fun hater. Plus, the beakes don't have as many football players as in the past so the interest for the rest of the frat just isn't at strong. We did have t-shirts made up in 04 that said "we can beat you on the field you can beat us off" but as far as using some of the old cheers, it might be awhile before you hear them again.

Airborne Dutch... I agree with you on your sentiments about the Beakes, I graduated in '06 and from what I saw, the boys just didn't get into the game later in our jr and sr years, and a couple guys from the DeVelder house came up with those shirts, not the BKE's. I did love the "free beer in the endzone, go team go!" cheers. You guys need more football players in the frat and that way more of the other guys will want to go to the games and everything.

Hotze and all those guys were legends though, the BKE's need more of guys like him!

Once again congrats to the Dutch! Talk about a group of guys that just never quit and find ways to win.  Great senior leadership and coaching is what is giving this team it's "luck."

Wartburg posters, don't mean to be cocky but with some of the things you were saying last week, it's hard not to be...

Dutchhawk,

I think you are confused on the definition of your  Central  "dynasty" or at least the timeframe of it.

definition of dynasty from Websters:  " a powerful group or family that maintains its position for a considerable time"

While I no doubt agree the Dutch dominated the IIAC from the 60's-thru the mid to last 90's, they are no longer considered a dynasty.  At least not according to the definition above.

WB has beaten them 6 of the past 9 years with today's assumptive victory, going back to 99'.
I consider 9 years a considerable amount of time, so please start using a new adjective besides dynasty

Sorry but I didnt read all the way back yet. I dont like to be too cocky, especially on here but devine deserves it. Oh look whos back..mr rocket screen? You have got to be kidding me, it went nowhere. Oh and I will continue to use dynasty because thats what Central is and you hate to admit it! 26 1st or 2nd place finishes in the last 27 years...10 OUTRIGHT titles in the last 20 years, I mean Wartburgs 3 in that "considerable period of time" is definitely Dynasty like if you ask me.

I dont know why I type this to him as he wont be back to say anything now that his scary and evil empire has been beaten by the Dutch 3 times in a row...2 at the formidable Walston Hoover...scary.

Sorry to be cocky but if you read back some of the pages you and fellow posters had it coming!

Based on what...stats?  Doesn't playing better when it counts = being the better team?

Wartburg is a great team with an extremely stingy defense and playmakers on offense.  It's a shame as an IIAC fan that both these teams couldn't have made it to the playoffs, as I know WB is better than a good chunk of the teams that did make the field.  This could have happened if your so-called 'better team' would have taken care of business at home against the 'lucky' and apparently inferior Central team.   ::)

All of the postings about luck of the Dutch.  I am not sure you can call it luck.  You have a 27 game win streak 20-0 the last two years.  When does it become luck?  I don't think you can get lucky that many times.  Good teams find a way to win.  If the Dutch are having all the luck then you have to say that the rest of the IIAC has bad Luck I don't buy that either.  The game in Waverly with the Knights was not luck.  If the Knights would have been able to move the ball the first half they might have been able to put the game away.  The fumble on the first play for Central was that lucky for the Knights no it was a great play by a great player.  The Dutch had a hill to climb for the rest of the game.  So the calls at the end of the game was it luck no way.  The refs called the game and thats what happened.  You dont go 29-1 in the last three years on luck.  The catches on fourth down that the Dutch made against UD and Wartburg were not luck but good plays.

It might be that the Dutch do not clobber teams by 40-50 points and that may lead teams to say that one score wins are lucky but I think that it shows that the Dutch are determined and have a will to succed.

I think Warthog said it best when the Knights were playing a playoff game each and every game that they played since the Augsburg game.  + K for that Warthog.
The quote from footballdaddy is based on emotion the measure of every game is the score that is the only one that counts.  The score favored the Dutch so that must mean that they are the better team.  If they had won the Augsburg game IMO they would have been playing instead of a two loss UWEC team.

D1Hawk, you're right about the T-Shirts. All the beakes had them and I kind of made it sound like a BKE creation. Sorry. I did my best in 05 when I wasn't playing to get into the games albeit with the help of large quantities of Natty Light. A lot of it depends on the students too. It seemed like before we got to Central a lot of people stuck around on campus during the weekends and went to the home games on Saturday. When our class came in, however, it seemed like student attendance dropped quite a bit. Maybe it was the dropoff for a couple years, but who knows. The Beakes definitely fed off the student energy, but with the crackdown by the administration in the last 5 years, I think it has been hard to get a consistently rowdy crowd.
