TC,

I was not going to go to the subject of All MIAC but since you brought it up I will go there.  How do you have 6 first and second team QB's 14 Olineman, etc etc.  All you have to do is finish the season and you get to be all MIAC?  IMO not much of an honor if everyone else is getting the honor is it?
I don't think any of us have watched enough MIAC football to really make judgments on something that's already a subjective decision.  Let their league make their own decisions.  Which is "true" or "best" isn't really up to anyone, in the end.

It's something to add to a resume, but all that matters is Saturday.

Im sure when you guys lose youll be all over how Kofoed played so terrible and wont give any credit for being beaten by a better team.

To an extend that may be partially true.   The Johnnies live or die with Kofed.  He can be  very inconsistent and his decision making really affects the team.  When he is on, he's great, but he tends to lapse at times.  Watch his mechanics early on.  Is he  setting up and following through, taking the sack when he should........sometimes he just gets sloppy and will make a foolish throw into coverage or throw short to an open  receiver.  He seems to play much better at home, looks more comfortable in the pocket.  I don't think he should have been a Gagliardi trophy finalist, I voted for Beaver.  Having said all that, I hope he does great on Saturday.     :D

If AK-11 decides to "gobble" the ball on Saturday we'll all be thankful.   :-X

Nice article Duffman, good info there. I'd never read/heard anything about NFL interest in Vance so that was cool to see even if it is a longshot. Speaking of which, the Dutch have a famous almumus who played in 3 Super Bowls with the Miami Dolphins, including the 1972 undefeated season and was selected to the Pro Bowl, Vern Den Herder. He was born in Iowa and inducted into the college football hall of fame along with Coach Schipper. Does St. John's have anyone who ever went on to a pro career?

Not an SJU alumunus but my 6th grade football coach was none other than Hall of Famer Jim Langer who also then would have played in Miami at the same exact time as Vern.

Yeah, this actually caused a bit of consternation and similar sentiments on the MIAC boards. It dilutes the honor a bit -- kind of the Lake Wobegon syndrome where "all of the children are above average."

Not to disrespect those honored, but they need to tweak that a bit.

One of the first was none other than some guy named John McNally, or Johnny Blood to many people (just look to the left!).  He won a few championships with the Packers in the 30s and was perhaps the first true "wide receiver" in the game, and is a charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  He is also known as one of the most colorful people ever to play the game.

After WWII he coached football at SJU (an alum on his last team told me that, when they beat St. Thomas that year, Blood didn't show up for practice for a whole week--he was still celebrating!). When he resigned, he famously said, "no coach will ever win at St. John's."  He was succeeded by some guy from Colorado named Gagliardi.

There have been several others, but most recently has been Blake Elliott (you may have heard of him), who was signed by the Vikings and broke his leg in training camp, which never fully healed to bring him back into the same shape.

But we're still waiting for our next Passanante.   ;D

One of the best things about Kofoed is when he improvises and buys time to get a receiver open and hits him for a huge gain.  One of the worst things about Kofoed is when he improvises and buys time only to throw across his body and across the field to a receiver who is still double covered.  The problem is, you can't have one without the other with Alex.

Regarding the All-MIAC team, I agree that it is pretty pointless to name six all-conference QBs.  Then again, if they only picked the one best player at each position for each team, four schools would make up 95% of the team.

Also, there are some REALLY good QBs in the MIAC right now--just the fact that there are 3 of them that I might put ahead of Gagliardi Trophy candidate Kofoed says a lot about the conference's depth at the position.

Well, yeah, of course.  Actually, it's a picture of him and Nick Gunderson, a rare shot as they pass each other as the placekicking unit takes over for the offense after another Johnnie touchdown.

Your description sounds a little like the Bears may draft him to be the next Rex (the good, the bad and the ugly) Grossman.  I would assume his inconsistently can be caused by some defensive pressure, but thats where your quality O-line comes in.  We've got a couple guys names Mulder and Blythe who put pretty good pressure on out of the nickel D.  Should be fun.

So after reading some of you SJU guys' posts you seem to go the way Kofoed goes. I think our Dbacks match up well as far as speed wise and physicality and our d-line has had some good luck getting pressure. If we can pressure Kofoed early and often it will be a very good sign for the Dutch and a long day for the Johnnies!

It is interesting looking at past scores that no games have been a blow out. Central winning by the biggest margin back in the day...and I think it was only 10. Sure sign it will be a close one and the Dutch are masters of winning close games!

Developing....bad day to be a Johnnie!

What is a Johnnie...is it like a little toilet, a "mini-john" if you will, or a group of guys, that would make sense with the college and all, maybe a pimp that is a midget?? ;)

Sounds like a QB that is prone to mistakes under pressure... Central tends to capitalize on mistakes. I like our defense's chances of creating some TO's and scoring off of them, and I doubt this year you will get bailed out on 4/6 4th down conversions.

Time to get out of the office for a little holiday break! Safe travels everyone, we'll see you Johnnies in Pella on Saturday, we're anxious to see you again.

Go Dutch!

Whether AK-11 is pressured or not is simply not relavent.... it's what he does when he is pressured.

As far as the john jokes are concerned..... go fly your windmill.

D1HawkD3CUI, If I recall, Vern Den Herder was in 4 superbowls.  He went the first 3 years with the Dolphins and retired after 12 years.  There was a story about him in the DM Register and he said his only regret was not getting back to the superbowl.   When someone got injured, they called him back for one more year and he closed his career out at the superbowl.  Not sure if he actually played or not though.
