4th year: "Ethics" with Dr. Alexander.  This was the only mayterm left open after I opted out of Outdoor Rec cuz my buddy was supposed to be getting married during Mayterm.  Not kidding... 2 weeks after I switched my schedule around, the chick broke off the wedding with my buddy.  Ethics was from 8-11 every day for the last month of my college career.  This guy was a hardcore atheist, so I always enjoyed good discussions of why he thought religious people were ignorant... he actually respected that I could carry on a coherent discussion when I was visibly hungover 95% of the time.

This was my last May Term class too.  I generally enjoyed Alexander's classes because they were usually a pretty free-form discussion on whatever topic came up that day.  Those days were a lot more enjoyable than the ones where we actually tried to go over the assigned material.  I think some of the topics of discussion that month ranged from why Ayn Rand was full of it, Burger King putting the Whopper Jr. on their dollar menu, the Duke lacrosse rape case, and Jessica Simpson's latest CD.

I learned my lesson after my first May Term (Dr. Ott for Statistics).  Second May Term I took golf with Coach Levik at 7:30 am.  Followed by Foundations of American Education at 10:00.  A group of us had learned the FAE class only had one test (the final) and that test hadn't changed in years.  We had a copy of the final in file along with the correct answers, so we would go to golf in the morning, play 18 or 27 holes after class, and only went to Foundations the first and last day.  Not particularly proud of that, since I was paying for an education not a month's worth of golf.

Alexander must have been there for years.  I had him in the Dark Ages.  He was nice enough guy, he gifted me a "B" which held my 3.0 GPA.

I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

At Central I took introduction to basketball with Jack Walvrood. I learned some good drills and we had at least one three point shooting contest a week. I also took theory of coaching with Coach Walvrood. It was actually fairly tough but we usually ended up discussing his own team. He was brutally honest about them which was interesting.

The craziest thing about Alexander... had a heart attack and died for a few minutes at some point in his life, and he came and spoke to our "Living with Death" class about the experience.  It was 100% bright lights, faces he knew, calm sensations... so I thought the Ethics class would be an interesting one.  It was interesting, but it was next to impossible to find flaws in his arguments for backing up atheism.  I might've alluded to the fact that he was an agnostic pretending to be an atheist and he got a kick out of that one.

SK... What's the scoop on the East Waterloo boys basketball team?  Getting beat by NU by 9 points???  They might be defending state champs... but c'mon!!!  What's Rick Coleman got to say about that?

You gonna be at the Dome this weekend for the semis?

It's almost like these little punks don't understand the tradition of E-High basketball.  And no... hadn't heard about WSR taking it to Xavier.  I read about WSR taking it to the homeboys on the wrasslin mat.  East High isn't a slouch there... looks like WSR has another good team this year.

I too am like DSquared and SK having Ethics as my last class ever at Wartburg.  Stupid religion and faith credits we had to fulfill.  The only class of my career at Wartburg that was before 9am.  Plenty of hungover moments and Alexander knew it.  I did earn some extra points from him one day.  He walks in with a "00" Chicago Blackhawks hockey jersey on and immediately I ask him if that is from "Christmas Vacation" to which he just turns around and reveals the "Griswold" name on the back.

Ethics wasn't an easy class, but there were some that I took.  Obviously coaching theory classes (Volleyball and Wrestling) were easy.  Classes usually canceled because of matches or duals.  There were only four or five students in the classes that were not athletes in that particular sports.  I think we spent only one day in the wrestling room.  "Scrimmages" in VB were always gals on the team and the others...luckily our grades weren't based on who won.  Coaching Authorization with Coach Holst also and easy one, but SK is right, tough to keep your eyes open.  Another class canceled a lot for various reasons.  Teaching Elementary Math, I needed one math class.  Auggie Waltman...great guy, terribly hard of hearing.  First day we had to fill out all the math classes we took in high school and grades.  I took everything I could with all A's and B's for grades, he suggested I take a higher level math class as this one would not challenge me and tests might seem easy.  Was he ever right...although now going back to the tech school for an Electronic Engineering degree I wish I had taken a tougher one that would actually transfer....oh well, live and learn.

One class SK forgot to mention was our first ever May Term class.  The first Communication Arts class required of our major with our professor...Rick Coleman.  Supposed to be 3 hours of class...it was bad luck if it lasted over an hour.  Final was something like 27 multiple choice questions with 2 questions be exactly the same word for word with the exact same 4 choices in the exact same answer.  When we asked him about it he said "Well it was that important I figured you better answer it twice".

I almost forgot about that one.  Rick's a great guy, but not a great teacher.  I remember you, me, and Skilling basically knowing everything (since we had already worked with WTV) and everybody else kind of lagging.  And Rick had nicknames for just about every kid in the class so he could remember their names.  "Nate the Skate" and whatnot.  One day we worked on lighting and as a challenge, Rick had me and a couple other kids light him.  After we got done he looked at the monitor and said "Wow, that's pretty good.  You guys should come work down at KWWL.  When they try to light me up down there all you see are eyes and teeth."

Sounds like WSR could be the real deal this year.  I hear they have a lot of talented kids, and it sounds like Todd Coleman's lad is playing on the varsity as a freshman and playing pretty well so far.  3A is flat-out loaded this year, so it'll be interesting to see how far they can go and if they can run with the Heelan, Harlan, or Wahlert in mid-March.

East on the other hand...I don't know.  I probably heard the least pre-season buzz around them as any team in the metro.  The MVC is going to be the best conference in the state again this year, and if McGraw's lads can't run with NU, then I don't know how they'll expect to compete with Wash, Kennedy, City High, etc. night in a night out of the conference season.
