IIRC, Arena 1 is cancelling the season. I guess I kind of assumed AF2 was doing the same.

Actually, one of the Barnstormers' owners came on a local Des Moines radio show a few weeks back to dispel those rumors. Basically, he said that, although they pay some type of franchise fee to the AFL, they are a separate entity with their own league headquarters. So it sounds like the AF2 league will continue this year. He was saying that the Barnstormers averaged around 10,000 fans last year. That's pretty impressive if you ask me.

In fact, the Barnstormers are holding an open tryout this weekend. That's how they found Brannen (Coe) and Dusty Kain (Simpson) last year.

Congrats to S. Macey, a.k.a. Purple Heys, on winning the IIAC Forever group's entry in ESPN's "College Bowl Mania.  Purple Heys had a record of 20-14 and 372 confidence points and narrowly beat out Klopenheimer with 18-16 and 368 confidence points.

The order of finish for the 12  entrants is:  Purple Heys, Klopenheimer, The Show, Thunderbolt, wbfootballdaddy, Knightlife06, SportsKnight, Orange and Black Attack, The Mayne Event, BeaverofYore, doolittledog and UD Spartans, a.k.a. DBQ1965.

I'll set up ESPN's bracket contest when "March Madness" rolls around and maybe we'll get more of you to join up.

A belated Happy New Year to all.

Congrats to Sherden. While the odds are still stacked against him, I would never bet against his work ethic and commitment. The number of hours and amount of work he has done the last 2 plus years is amazing. If nothing else, he has set a tremendous example for current and future Norse.

Uh oh, I hope the two Spartan fans in this contest finishing as the bottom two isn't a sign of things to come for the UD team next fall :o :o :o

Let me know if you plan to make any games next season and my wife and I will try to look you up.  So far we know we won't make the Rockford (too far), Central or BV (birthday parties) games.  We will be at the Platteville game (night game), UD @ Cornell (good food), UD @ Simpson (wifes brother in Des Moines can babysit) those are the for sure games.  Probable is UD @ Coe because it is so close for us.  Maybe's would be Loras @ UD, Wartburg @ UD, Luther @ UD...the later in the year you get, the less probable for us...my wife hates cold weather ;)

Thanks again for setting that up for us. I too would like to congratulate Heys and Klop for getting the top two spots, and finishing in the upper 80's percentile in the nation. The rest of us, much like the Big Ten, not so much.

So when does Florida play Utah for the championship?

Gotchya. Didn't catch that on the radio. I coached with Dusty this past season, but haven't seen him since the season got over so I hadn't heard much.

Heard that earlier this week former Lorass coach Klieman interviewed for the UIU job.

Yes ... I wasn't sure what to say about the two of us finishing at the bottom of the contest!

I'll probably try to make the Rockford game since Rockford is closer to Grand Rapids than is Dubuque.  Maybe the Platteville game if my wife wants to get back to DBQ and see old friends ... otherwise I might have to pass on the night game.  Our Fall travel schedule will determine if I get over for Central, Loras (probably Homecoming) Wartburg or Luther.  As our daughter (a great football fan) just got divorced and our grandson gets every other weekend with his Dad, maybe I can bring her with me for one of those Saturdays.  Its been a while (like 20 years) since she was on  campus and I know she would enjoy seeing the new stadium ... and a Spartan win!

Is anyone planning on attending the DIII wrestling nationals at the US Cellular Center.  I'm really amped about going this year.  It is a great place to watch wrestling. Not a bad seat in the house!

Go Kohawks!

The lastest National Wrestling rating are out
Wartburg   1st
Coe          4th
Cornell    11th
Luther     15th
Dubuque  26th

Everyone stayed pretty much as they were in Dec.

Wanted to tip my hat to UWL quickly in the wrestling rankings.  The last I could fine had them in at #5, but I heard from coach yesterday that they have been bumped down to #7.  Earlier this season the Eagles lost to UWW after a majority of the team was suspended for breaking team rules.  Had to forfeit two weight classes and had a few of the second stringers wrestling.  Not something you see a lot anymore.  Really takes a lot of class from a coach to set an example like that.

Good luck to the Knights this weekend at National duals.  I do pull for UWL as well, so maybe another 1st place for the Knights and 2nd for the Eagles with the rest of the IIAC filling out the top 10.

My brother ... a "white hat" (he likes to be called "sombrero blanco") high school football official in California sent me this link re:  the Florida - Oklahoma BCS game.  Its good reading.

that was a good article-

What I find interesting is that the refs also receive BCS Rings for doing the game.

My buddy was @ the KU b-ball game Wednesday night and sat next to the ref who did last year's championship game.  He said the ring was like a super bowl ring as far as size.

I'd love to be a backjudge and be the free safety of the officials...

I'd love to be the white hat or umpire right in the middle of it all.
