Careful Doolittle -- some of your UD brethren have yet to demonstrate their sense of humor. We would hate to offend.

;)

Since that was from dutchfan1, I think I'm being included ... since at least a couple of you seem to think I am the nit picking old fart on here.

Actually ... a wintertime IIAC alumni snow bowl might not be a bad idea.  Of course, I can say that because this time tomorrow I will be on the beach at Puerto Escondido, Mexico, drinking fresh margaritas and and soaking up the sun.

Adios.

GO SPARTANS!

1965 I don't feel that way at all.  Oh wait a minute I guess I am an old fart too!!!!!  That must be why I feel this way :)

That was a good story about Jack Trice.  I think I have a different take on the sports Mount Rushmore thing.  I think it should be for accomplishments on the field and the awards obtained.  Not to say that Jack Trice was not important to ISU.  One person not mentioned here and I think deserves a spot is current ISU wrestling head coach Cal Sanderson.  My four would be Cal Sanderson, Dan Gable, Shaun Johnson, and Nile Kinnick.

Reasons for each

Cal Sanderson Four NCAA titles and never losing a college match only one person has done that.  Also won the Gold in the Olympics so not only a great national wrestler but an international one to boot.

Dan Gable  Three NCAA titles, Olympic Gold medalist, Top Coach for his sport and until Sanderson had the records for most winning wrestler.

Nile Kinnick won the Heisman for Iowa back when you played both ways.  All around football player.  Gave his life in service of our country.

Shaun Johnson Olympic Gold medalist in a very demanding sport.  I don't know to many other women that have succeeded to this international stature in Iowa.  We have had many good women athletes in Iowa but not to this level.

There are a lot more that deserve mention and I don't disagree with any of them.  I just think these are my top four.

My Mt. Rushmore would be Kinnick, Bob Feller, Kurt Warner and Gable.
Gable has such an amazing track record as a high schoola and collegiate wreslter as well as a coach and ambassador for wrestling.
Warner has been a two time MVP and three time Super Bowl starter. I would argue this triumphs his rather ordinary high school and college careers.
Kinnick is synonymous with football in this state.
Bob Feller was a dominant pitcher when baseball was the game in America. I had the displeasure of meeting him once. I think a lot of people overlook him because he is such a pain in the butt, but his accomplishments are incredible.

I left off Shawn Johnson because the participation in her sport is so limited. I know the same argument could be made for Gable, but his feats are legendary internationally.

any predictions on the dvc. vs. wartburg match on sat. night? should be a good one...hopefully dvc isnt too wiped out from wrestling coe the night before and is ready to take on wartburg.

The same could be said for the Knights, who face Augsburg in Mpls the night before.

Iowa's Sports Mt. Rushmore:
Kinnick, Gable, and Feller are automatic.  For the fourth spot, I guess I'd need a bit of a clarification on whether the people need to be Iowa natives, or if they just need to have had their accomplishments occur within the states borders (for example:  people born in another state that had great careers at Iowa, ISU, etc., like Cael Sanderson, Chuck Long, and so on).

Personally, I think you'll see them go with more of an "impact" person for the 4th spot.  Someone like Dr. Christine Grant, Bernie Saggau (shudder), or Johnny Bright.

The Barnstormers Kurt Warner played on and the Barnstormers Joe Brannen plays on are apples and cheeseburgers. Not even close to compare the two.

Well, you do know cheeseburgers.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Maybe we could settle this with a snow football game between the alums on here from each school  ;)

And by that I mean the alums of Coe and Wartburg...no way you are getting the 5 old Dubuque guys out of their warm houses in this kind of weather...or most any kind of weather for that matter.

Sounds good to me, it would be a nice warm up to my rugby season.

Coe has been doing streaming video of a lot of their events this year, so I'd be surprised if they don't do Friday night's dual.  I know for a fact that Wartburg's student-run TV outfit will be streaming Saturday's Wartburg vs. DelVal dual on WartburgTV.Org  And that's after they air Wartburg's basketball double-header against Dubuque earlier in the day.  Gonna be a long one for the WTV kids.  Hopefully they have plenty of Joe's trade-out certificates to use afterwards.

Good thing my wife doesn't read this board.  If she knew the Wartburg/Dubuque game was webcast she probably wouldn't let me go to the game in Waverly this saturday.  We are looking forward to seeing the W and then hitting the Fainting Goat afterwards.

Pick up games of football in the snow were the BEST growing up! I would be willing to come out and play  ;D I'd like to think I am in just as good of shape as my playing days with the exception of the joints and major ligaments. I definitely feel more soreness after work outs and find it much easier to twist a knee or ankle then when I was younger  :(

You're not fooling anyone.  Word on the street is your young son can bust a move and score a long one past you anytime he wants :P
