Grinnell is well endowed compared to any school including its MWC counterparts.

I'm not sure how endowment size is relevant...unless attracting a conference member is like attracting a mate, in which case endowment (read: large) becomes one of the first considerations.   8)

I would think a college president would have a concern for missed instruction time and travel budgets.  In which case proximity becomes an unimpeachable factor.

I guess I get back to my original position as to maintaining the status quo.  What is the actual motivation for the IIAC to expand?

Commissioner Chuck Yrigoyen says they'd like to be at an even number for scheduling purposes, and he says they've been discussing the issue to see what they can do.

So says the commish.  I don't know if scheduling is that big of a deal.  Maybe the addition of another school would bring more dues into the league office...and maybe a raise for the commish?!?!

The way it is now, for football you play every other team and get two non-con games.  Most all the other sports you play everyone else.  You could add one team and not disrupt much.  Once you go beyond 10 members you get no out of conference football games and in the other sports you will get cases where not every conference member plays every other team in some sports.  If they are saying they want even numbers then it would make sense they are thinking of adding one more team.  Once you get to 12 or 14 teams you are looking at divisions and then you might as well just have two seperate conferences.  If you are staying in-state then Grinnell is the only easy answer.  If you bring in an NAIA team then they have transition years and wouldn't even officially count in the standings for another 3 or 4 years.

Whatever, I guess.  I suppose that will just mean an additional city for me to visit over the next few years that I would not have otherwise.

Thanks for the insight into the IIAC.

Heys, you mentioned 88% of Grinnell students were from out-of-state, and you discussed endowments.

As I recall, one of my high schools classmates went to Grinnell (from out-of-state) and she was well-endowed!  :)

Purple Heys

Which means she was perfect for Grinnell, not IIAC football!

Just consider the amount of success IIAC teams have seen in the past 6 years (Central/Wartburg football, Loras/Wartburg soccer, Wartburg cross country, Loras men's basketball, Simpson women's basketball, wrestling throughout the league, Wartburg baseball, Wartburg/Loras/UD track, Wartburg golf, etc.) and I think it is pretty apparent that the IIAC has found a very good balance between in-league competition and opportunities to compete against the rest of the nation.

Forgetting someone?  I'm thinking of a team that has been the IIAC rep in the NCAA Tourny 6 of the past 7 years, including a trip to the semi-finals last year...  ::)

As for the topic at hand, I hope it isn't Waldorf or Grand View if they want a team to join that's going to be competitive.

Double check the Loras schedule, but I'm pretty sure Wartburg plays @ the Rock Bowl on 10/24, which would narrow down your open dates a bit.

Why has no one suggested inviting Maharishi University to start a football team and join the IIAC?  Travel would be no problem.  They could fly every where they go.

Instant dynasty for the Maharishi's...kind of hard to tackle the running back when he is floating 10 feet above the ground  ;)

When I was 14 and looking for any excuse to drive a car, I drove my dad to Fairfield when he had a business meeting with school officials.  While he was in the meeting I walked around the campus.  Back then it was still a nice looking place and they had a very nice stadium.  I have heard now that most of the campus as well as the stadium have been town down and replaced with newer stuff.

Too bad Parsons left the conference and then closed its doors.  I was looking at a website about Parsons and the pictures they had on there made Animal House look tame by comparison  :o

dont forget about Coe men's soccer!!! - but seriously, Coe softball has been pretty good the last 6 or so years - repping the iiac in the national tourney quarters a couple years ago
there isnt anyone that people are mentioning that could consistantly compete in the IIAC.  Ambrose is the only one, and they would loose their competitive edge once they stopped handing out scholarships - they could not compete without that.  If we added another school it would drag the conference down, but Cornell could have someone to fight against for the cellar

Thanks for the laugh today ;D ;D ;D  I guess all IIAC places would have to start selling tofu hot dogs and organic pop

no thanks....I dealt with them enough during high school!
