Is it Spring yet?
Not today. Up to a foot of snow expected in SoIo

Waterloo area is only supposed to get a trace to 2 inches of snow.  Or so I think the radio said this morning over the yelling of the kids I was taking to school.

DutchFan2004

Southern Iowa is supposed to have thunder snow that can produce up to a foot of the white stuff.  Im glad we are above Interstate 80.   ;D

I heard a couple stories last night concerning high school athletics that made me scratch my head, but in this era of winning regularly I thought there might be some validity to them.

#1 Ankeny is looking to build a second high school, but only want to have one set of athletic teams.  Unlike Valley with a ninth grade building, Ankeny is looking having four grades at each building.

#2 If Ankeny gets the OK, Waukee will be doing the same in four years.

#3 Waterloo has pettitioned to combine the athletic programs at East and West.

So can people from those areas either confirm or deny these things are in the works?   I can see sharing in small schools that wouldn't have enough kids to field teams, but big schools doing this seems silly.

I realize people like to win.  But that is just taking away starting jobs from kids that could develope into good players.  I don't like it.

In somewhat IIAC related news.  Northwestern (IA) is set to announce Ron Fellows as their new HC.  He is the brother of Dubuque OC Jeremy Fellows.  Northwestern is breaking with tradition of hiring a graduate of their school...and someone without Dutch Reformed roots.  Supposedly it came down to Ron Fellows, Coach Kac formerly of Central, and 3 guys from within the program.  Ron played at Huron College and as a high school coach in Michigan and then a JC coach in California was responsible for sending a bunch of kids to UD to play.  I wonder if he is looking to bring his brother over to Orange City???

Got the go ahead here in Ankeny last year to build another school and voted this year to have 2 fully seperate functioning HS's. 1 on the North side and 1 on the south side. Contruction will start in the spring of 2010 and by the start of SY 2013, both schools will be functioning seperate of each other.
Has been a heated debate over this, but I think in the end, the thought that this will be better for the kids prevailed.
Ankeny was not too long ago not that big of town and people who have been here for 10 years+ are called old timers.

I will be interesting to see how each of these schools fair independently of each other.  Will they both be in the CIML Iowa Conference?

My granddaughter will be a senior in Ankeny the first year they open both High Schools. It is my understanding she will get to pick which HS to attend that year as a senior but everyone else has to go to the HS in the area where they live.  WH is this the way it going to be ?

That is an interesting set of statistics you found.

Observations:

Loras  & UD are the only two schools where men out number women. (Loras 58 more men - UD 175 more men) Interesting they are in the same city.  I understand that Loras has some legacy as an all male college, but UD is puzzling.  It isn't just that UD is bring in jocks. 402 of the male students are not involved in athletics.

It looks like Decorah and Storm Lake are the places Sportsknight should have gone to find a job.  Women out number men at BV by nearly 550 student.  At Luther there is a reported 350 difference, but in reality it could be as many as 800 more women are looking for dates with members of the opposite sex.  ;)

At Central over 1/2 of the male population is involved in athletics.  Over 1/4 of females at Central are involved with athletics.  At UD, Loras and Wartburg over 20% of the women are athletes.  Buena Vista has just 7% of their women listed as participating in athletics.  Perhaps a larger percentage are participating with athletes:-*

Most schools have between 150 to 200 more males than females participating in athletics, Cornell has just 101 fewer females on the rosters than males. The number is somewhat distorted because of the 88 female athletes on campus 56 are multi-sport.  At the same time UD has just 12 multi-sport females out of the 125 women athletes.

Luther has many multi-sport athletes.  They lead the IIAC with 90 female and 100 male multi-sport participants

Great Question. There will have to be some realignment of the CIML. There was a story put out last year on how things would probably work out that way. I don't remember what the particulars were.

That I have not heard.

I'm assuming they are counting Track and XC as two different sports which I guess technically is true, but when Wartburg used to give out awards for that, I didn't agree with calling that particular person multi sport since it didn't show a different skill-set.

What's interesting is West Bend, Wisconsin does the opposite. They have one high school in town but for all extra-ciriculars there are two high schools West and East, but all the students go to classes together. They are divided by birthday. If you were born on an odd number day you "go" to West. If you were born on an even number day you "go" to East. (Unless you're not the oldest child in the family, then you "go" to whichever your oldest sibling went)

Tell me you just made this up.   It's either that or somewhere in West Bend there is an educator with too many masters degrees for their own good that thinks he/she is really really smart.
