My wife running a daycare meant I was bannished to the upstairs...with no computer.  The plus side was I was able to watch ESPN all day...in between naps.

No laptop and a wireless home network?

I keep telling my wife that is what we need next out here.  We shall see.

Do you ever work?  ESPN, naps, being banned to the upstairs.  You have the good life.  Well except for the apple orchard runs and the Wiggles CD's in  your car.

Yesterday I was listening to the local morning show, and they were laughing about the KidzBop CD's -- you know, where kids sing the Top 40-style hits (sometimes in a more kid-friendly version for a child audience.) Anyway, I chuckled the entire walk to work, thinking that Doolittle HAD to have some of those in his minivan. :)

You guessed right.  I grind my teeth every time my wife puts them in.  Though, I do like the Rockabye baby CD's they have out.  Instrumental lullaby CD's of Nirvana and Led Zep and others.  It's quite funny to listen to.  And makes me hopefull that as my kids age they will think back to their early dream time and get into rock...and not that pop stuff like the Jonas Bros and Hannah Montana.

Now, if my son can channel his enthusiasm for tackling daddy (good technique, wraps the legs) and gets into football, I will probably be ok if one or more of my kids likes pop music.  On another note, my son is currently refusing to wear anything other than red sweatshirts...so maybe he is leaning towards Central at this early age ;D

Dog...I think DF2k4 has brainwashed you into being a closet Dutch fan ;).  Red could mean Simpson, Central, Northwestern (IA), Nebraska, or even Coe if you want to stretch it that far.

How is it I brainwashed him?  Coe is not red that is more maroon IMHO.  That leaves Simpson or Central since this is a D3 site we have talked about.  I think Dog just assumes Central since he wants to cheer for a conference champ.   ;D ;D ;D  That and the free QB lessons that have been offered for his son.   ;D ;D ;D

So ... what do we hear from Long Beach State's freshman high jumper?

A somewhat slow start as she's been working through a minor back problem and only jumped 5'4.25" so far.  She's a little behind for the moment.  Outdoor season starts next weekend and she says she's beginning to feel better.  She has higher bars in front her but she has to get moving as the #1 girl there cleared 5'8.50" last weekend.

Bear in mind 5'4.25" would have made her IIAC champ last weekend.

While it would be nice to see her go higher now, it's always better to be peaking later rather than sooner.

We'll keep you posted.   :)

Hate to see so long of breaks between posts. What's everyone doing during spring break?

I think as grown ups we don't get spring breaks anymore.  Unless you are DBQ1965 and retired...then pretty much everyday is spring break!!!

My 3 year old keeps telling us we should become pirates.  So maybe for spring break I could pack up the family and head to the Gulf of Mexico and steal a ship and head out on the ocean waves...could be fun.  Or, maybe I could grab one of the kids and take in a spring practice or two for an IIAC school or two.  That would beat my typical spring break activity of starting up the yard work for the year ;)

Jr. + I had to delay our AL golf trip due to basketball by 2 days. Our first stop Muscle Shoals, the course was closed Sat thru Tuesday noon. Heavy rain then SNOW Sunday. Today @ Auburn there was a 6' snowman on the 16th tee. The course was open but wet. Tomorrow we play here and head to Mobile. 70's by the time we get there. I recommend the much advertised R. T. Jones golf trail. We may stick around AL a couple extra days rather than get to CR for NCAA wrestling..... Go Knights

I haven't written on the board since the end of the season so I have a serious question.  WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE "DOMINANT CULTURE" ON EACH IIAC CAMPUS ?

Is the Domiant Culture at Wartburg athletics?  At Cornell, academics?  At Luther, music.  Or is there a split on each campus. Please give a percentage for each campus.......in your serious opinion.  This would include the focus of administration, alumni and faculty.

I offer this as a serious discussion......there is money riding on the outcome of your opinion.

I will give you the first work or phrase that comes to my mind when I think about each IIAC school

BV:  Farmers
Cornell:  Weird
Cental:  Up tight
Simpson:  Zzzzzzzz
Wartburg:  Be Oranage/We are the best
Luther:  Nakedness
Coe:  Dumpy
Dubuque:  Florida
Loras:  Arrogant

At Wartburg I'd say its probably a 60/40 or 70/30 split between athletics and music.  The running joke around campus when I was in school was that there were three kinds of Wartburg student:  athlete, musician, and other.

Very interesting question.  And hard to answer.  It has been a long time since I was at Dubuque so things could be different now, though I suspect not.  While I was at Dubuque the undergrad enrollment was only about 800.  Have 100 of those as football players and add all the other sports in there and a very large percentage of the student population were athletes.  Though that was far from the culture.  Sports were popular with the students, the basketball team was winning conference titles then and the gym was packed every night for their games.  But overall (and with the reputation Dubuque has I am sure this will bring laughs)  it was academics.  People were there to get a degree and move on with their lives.  Now, while there everyone was very willing to soak in the college experiance.  Be that being involved with the greek system, athletics, the party life.  Everyone seemed to be involved with a bit of everything at UD.  But really there wasn't a "dominant" culture.  I would say from the administration stand point at that time it was on academics.  The dean of students that arrived while I was there stated in a speech that it was his desire to get rid of the greek system and he basically didn't like any student groups outside of academic groups.  Strangely enough the school went seriously down hill shortly after he arrived.

I suppose, if you will, there were 120 aviation students at UD out of a total enrollment of 800.  Due to IBM giving away free PC's to students that became computer majors you probably had half the campus majoring in Computer Science...those could be dominant cultures.  Also at that time Dubuque probably had close to a quarter of their student population as international students, so you could also argue the dominant culture at UD was multi-culturalism???  I don't know, from my memory of UD there was no dominant culture...if that makes any sense?!?!

As far as today.  The UD administration is really pushing their improved academics and promoting their aviation and nursing programs among others.  They have also noted though, that with successfull athletics programs, this brings added notice for the school.  As well as added donations from alumni and that sort!!!  What is the dominant culture???  Academics with a strong dose of athletics.

And Klop, I totally agree with your Loras as arrogant phrase that comes to mind!!!

The Show

Word/Phrase Association:

BV - laptops/technology
Central - sunday school
Coe - first thought was with Klop, second thought was mud pit (but that is fixed), I'll go with urban
Cornell - one course at a time
Dubuque - aviation (older brother started out there with that)
Loras - all I can think of (or know of) is the Rock Bowl
Luther - music
Simpson - first thought was cheap turf, I'll go with May-Term
Wartburg - athletics

I'll give this work association thing a try:

BV - Jersey-chasers
Central - FTD
Coe - Can't go to college?
Cornell - Not the one in New York
Dubuque - Blah (don't have anything too good or too bad to say about 'em)
Loras - Better than you.  If you don't believe me, just ask 'em.
Luther - Gay
Simpson - Cousins (had 3 that went there)
Wartburg - Best Five Years of My Life!
