I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Two weekends - two national championships.   ;D

Not a bad 8 day stretch for Wartburg.   8)

Congratulations to the Knights women's in-door track & field team.

Okay ... ESPN's Tournament Challenge is out ... and the IIAC Forever group is all set up.

Join us in the field of 65/64 and see if you can pick the winner of this year's D-1 March Madness.

Click on the following link:http: //games.espn.go.com/tcmen/frontpage

If you played "Bowl Mania" last December/January, you already have a Member Name and Password.  If you don't remember them ... or you didn't play last college bowl season ... you will have to sign up again (its easy and its free).

Then you will be all set to pick this year's NCAA National Champion in that "other" division.

If the link doesn't work (my understanding of technology being what it is ... then go to www.espn.go.com ... look for someplace that says "Tournament Challenge" and click on that.  Then you should have the right page to sign-in or sign-up.

I'll be watching here to see if there are in problems you report with getting on board.  If there is a hitch in the process, the group you are looking for is IIAC Forever ... and the password is IIAC 2009.

Good luck to all.

What's your key to success?

I will get in on this after I study a bit more.  Is this another one where each round is worth the same amount of points?  The last two times I have been in on these I was in a pick-em where each round was worth the same amount of points.  Each time I led the field from the first weekend on...only to not pick the eventual winner and end up around 10th place :'(

I guess Wartburg is to be congratulated on their athletic accomplishments.  But I hear the academic faculty is beginning to rumble about it......questioning the over-emphasis on athletics to the sacrifice of academics.  The "W" center is an issue, salaries paid to coaches, academic minded alumni questioning the direction of the school.  Perhaps there is a negative to the multiple championships if the faculty/alumni have questions.

Nothing new. Been going on for 10 years at least, yet the med school placement rate ranks up there with just about anywhere.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

I think anytime ANY school wins something in sports you will have some on the academic side questioning if their school is an institute of higher learning or a jock factory.  Just the continual push/pull you have between the two sides trying to get their share of the budget pie.  The thing is, for the most part, each side needs the other to truely thrive.

I'm sure there are some people who question the direction things are going at Wartburg.  Based on the number of former and current faculty I see at football playoff games and the national wrestling tournament, I am sure there are many who find the athletic success a good thing.

There probably are staff members who question why the college is spending money to have Simon Estes on the payroll or why the college spends money to maintain Wartburg West in Denver, Colorado.

I've never looked through the  Martin Luther exhibit on the top floor of the library.  Why do they spend money maintaining that old junk?  Only about half the students are Lutheran by faith and a small number of those go to chapel on a regular basis.  Why does the college have a chapel that cost several million dollars to build, cost thousands to maintain and why do they keep two chaplins on the payroll?

How many pipe organs does one college need?  I would imagine there are some complaints about why Wartburg needs more than one.  The choir director at the Lutheran church I attend could probably stand in front of the Wartburg Choir and wave his baton.  He wouldn't cost as much as some of the music professors, but I don't think the Wartburg Choir would sound quite as good with him at the podium.

Doolittle is right.  Everybody needs one another to thrive.  Every student who shows up on campus because of either athletic success, pipe organs, a beautiful chapel, a distinquished opera singer, or interesting Luther artifacts brings in another $30,000.00 to help pay faculty salaries.

Sounds to me a bit defensive........and that you probably agree with me.  Wartburg finances are a bit over the top for athletics or so alums say.  How long wil the President last with that kind of debt.  This is not a matter of athletics, it is a matter of keeping a good college in the black with an academic faculty of repute.  You might want to question the med school admit stats.  I am all for Wartburg College since I too am a Lutheran and hope that college can continue.  But it seems the academic people in Waverly are concerned.

These are the numbers I got from the Wartburg admissions department site concerning Wartburg graduates over the last eight years. I'm not an expert on acceptance rates at medical professions schools, but these numbers don't seem so bad.

Medical School-79 of 86 applicants (92%)
Physical Therapy School-42 of 44 (95%)
Dental School-20 of 22 (91%)
Optometry School-11 of 11 (100%)
Veterinary Medicine School-13 of 14 (93%)
Occupational Therapy School-12 of 12 (100%)
Chiropractic School-20 of 20 (100%)
Pharmacy School-14 of 14 (100%)

From the Luther web-site

Over the last 10 years,71 percent of Luther students who have applied to medical school have been accepted, far above the national acceptance rate of 41 percent.
