Speaking of April Fools; anyone had a ShowMe sighting?

To be fair to ShowMe, he's not just a Fool in April....

Just got off the phone with Loras AD Brad Soderberg, who says that due to economic conditions, Loras will be putting their football program on hiatus after this season.  Says that when the economy turns back around, they may look into bringing the program back, but until then, this will be the final Loras football season.

Nice April Fools SK.  You had me thinking about that for a minute.

Got ol' PH on it too.  I didn't know if any of you fellas (and Dutchie) would fall for it.

In truthful news, word on the street here in the Key City is that the Spartans will open spring workouts on Sunday.

Yea, finally some spring practice news...thanks.

Good April Fools joke there as well.  I was thinking of doing a UIU coming back to the IIAC joke and tie it into that report from Radio Iowa that the IIAC was looking to expand.  My wife has made me promise not to do any of those for awhile...she was getting too mad at me.

DLD -- do you believe anything this man says today?  ;D

I wouldn't gas up the minivan for a road trip just yet.....

I still need somebody to tell me how many days until kickoff for IIAC teams...my brain is fried.

Hey dog ... I believe it is 175 days until the Spartans kick-off in Rockford, Illinois.

GO SPARTANS!

Actually ... it is 157 days.  I told you I was numerically challenged!  That's why TurboTax is so good for people like me.

Hmm, you know, you are right.  I shouldn't believe anything I hear today.  I wouldn't be gassing up the minivan anyway, I'm sure my wife already has a long honey do list made up.  I have to be good now, because in the fall I have a lot of football planned out ;)

Believe me, the "Loras is dropping football" gag is no where near my best work for the day.  Stayed after work last night and covered my co-worker's desk in Post-It notes...1,400 of them.

Wouldn't have done you any good, since I bought them at Hy-Vee.  And if you thought you'd be able to get 3M stock to take advantage, wrong again.  I bought the cheapo generic ones.  Big mistake.  If you ever plan on Post-Iting someone, get the real deal.  Trust me on this.

This comes after recent news that Upper Iowa is planning on 60 million dollars in improvements to their Fayette campus.  They have some good things going on there.  While I am happy to see that, it's still Fayette :P

For $24M, they could purchase Fayette  ;)

U.S. Census Figures for Fayette, Iowa - Population 1,300
Total Housing Units = 438
Occupied Housing Units = 400
Owner Occupied Housing Units = 216
Median Value of Housing = $55,000
438 X $55K = $24,090,000

5WOL - THAT is Funny   :D

I agree it was funny, but by (former) profession, I am required to be a wet blanket. :(

The # of housing units times the MEAN value would be the 'price' of housing units; the # times the median is meaningless (pun intended ;)).

In a town of 1,300 there must be a number of properties other than housing units, at least some of which are worth more than any of the housing units.

But I'd bet that $60M could buy the town! ;D

Dear Mr. Wet Blanket;

Meaningless?  Not quite ...

You are correct in saying that the mean X units would give the exact value of Fayette's worth.  But for budget purposes, estimators use the median because it is less likely to be skewed by outlying data and gives a better idea of any general tendency in the data.  Therefore, the calculation has some value.

Statistics aside, I chose to use the median value X total housing units because it was (1)redily available (2) this is a FOOTBALL board and (3) I wasn't looking to thoroughy reserching UIU's buy-out plan without compensation; but the gauntlet has now been thrown ...

So here's the deal:  I'll have my people (any volunteers out there?) contact Fayette County and tally the assessed values for privatly owned buildings in the Fayette Corporate Limits.  This would include homes and businesses but would not include publicly owned properties, bare land or any University facilities.  I say its worth is closer to $24M, you say $60M.  If the total is under $42M,  you'll have to limit your posts on the IIAC board to 5 words or less for the rest of April.

Sincerely;

 :o ;D

5WOL,

If you're suggesting UIU buy Fayette, the exclusion of university property makes sense, but I don't know about "[other] publicly owned properties, [and] bare land"!  If that is not UIU property, but IS Fayette property, it counts.  And since the mean is invariably higher than the median on grouped data of this sort, I will (sight unseen) put in a bid of $42.1 million for the whole shebang. :D

[You are correct that policy wonks go with the median as a better measure of what is 'typical', 'mainstream', etc., but NOT for calculating total value.  Omaha's mean net worth would decline quite noticeably if Warren Buffet retired to the Bahamas; the median would at most decline by a buck. ;D]
