5WOL,

If you're suggesting UIU buy Fayette, the exclusion of university property makes sense, but I don't know about "[other] publicly owned properties, [and] bare land"!  If that is not UIU property, but IS Fayette property, it counts.  And since the mean is invariably higher than the median on grouped data of this sort, I will (sight unseen) put in a bid of $42.1 million for the whole shebang. :D

[You are correct that policy wonks go with the median as a better measure of what is 'typical', 'mainstream', etc., but NOT for calculating total value.  Omaha's mean net worth would decline quite noticeably if Warren Buffet retired to the Bahamas; the median would at most decline by a buck. ;D]

No deal

  • public facilities aren't assessed (ie wastewater treatment plants, parks, cemeteries, water towers, etc.)
  • undeveloped outlying farmland will remain agricultural no mater what UIU does
  • bare land survey nubs and bits are too time consuming to research (ex: the west 5 feet of the south half of lot 2of1of2of1 in block 2 of Adkin's 1st addition)

BTW, my "buy-out" reference was tounge-in-cheek.  My point is that UIU's investment in the Fayette campus seems disproportionate considering that their distance learning satelites are their bread and butter ... but it's difficult to convey thoughts when every word gets counted.

Blame it on your name! ;D

I'm quite aware this was all tongue-in-cheek (not sure about 'tounge-in-cheek' :P).  But if you're gonna 'buy the town', I'd assume that includes the school(s), cemeteries, waste-water treatment, etc.  They're not taxed, but are part of the town.  Doesn't count to just buy the houses!

With no knowledge whatsoever of the situation, I'll assume UIU is investing in UIU, not Fayette. ;)

I don't know how many of you have noticed sportsknight's tag-line on his posts:

That deserves +k.

My great great great grandfather shook the hand of Abe Lincoln.  He shook the hand of my great great grandfather, who shook the hand of my great grandfather, who shook the hand of my grandfather, who shook the hand of my father, whom has shaken my hand.

Now if the algebraic equation A=B and B=C and A=C is correct, then I have shaken the hand of Abe Lincoln.

Not really IIAC or football related, but a basketball player from Grinnell will be competing in the national 3-point contest on ESPN tonight:  http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20090401/SPORTS0208/904020342

Believe me, the "Loras is dropping football" gag is no where near my best work for the day.  Stayed after work last night and covered my co-worker's desk in Post-It notes...1,400 of them.

Here's the video:  http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/42300667.html?video=YHI&t=a

For some reason, I get the feeling sportsknight had ulterior motives with his post-it notes April Fools joke.

sportsknight - "I feel terrible I did that to your desk...how about I take you out for some drinks tonight to make up for it?!?!"  (looks hopeful)  ;D

I've been so wrapped up in my personal and business goings on that I failed to look at the date.

Her fiance would probably take issue with that.  I'm not sure if I could take him either.  It'd be at best 50/50.

Well, then you could always hope she tells all her single friends about her funny co-worker.

Now, you being in Dubuque...we need some first-person accounts of UD and Loras spring football!!!

Any thought on the Jay Cutler trade to the Bears?  As a Bears fan,  I can honestly say the only thing that I will miss about Orton is his beard and the pictures of him wasted in Iowa City.

Looks like Joe Brannen is in the middle of a quarterback controversey.

Dusty Kain had a touchdown.

Jason Ripke had a nice game as well...
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

I know it is a nice and sunny spring day and everybody wants to get outside before the snow hits this weekend.  But we can't go a whole day without any posts.

So, question for the day.

What is the strangest/funniest thing you have seen on the football field?

Player going to the wrong huddle...somebody run into a goalpost...knock over a ref...that kind of stuff.

Fannosaurus Rex

I played on the freshman team in high school.  Once, when I was on the kick-off return team the poorly kicked ball dribbled up to my feet.  Rather than risk trying to pick it up and getting clobbered and fumbling, I decided to let it roll dead.  I don't which was funnier, my poor choice or coach's hysteria.

I saw a player go in the wrong huddle, but he was concussed.
