Mrs. Rex, through some sort of mystical formula that involves numerology, horse geneology and parapsychology, picked the 50-1 winner.  I had a show ticket on the third place runner so, what-a-ya-know, we actually made money on the event.  I didn't think it would happen until pigs fly and sure enough, all I have been hearing about is swine flew.

The problem now is, I can never figure out an appropriate drink for the Preakness in two weeks.  People I know who have been to Baltimore say Ripple is about right.  Pimlico is bankrupt so they may be right.
Look what I found.  There are several versions on google, so search away.

This one covers the whole triple crown.

I think the horse genealogy was the key.  It certainly wasn't his prior races.  He's a gelding, so he will not be at stud. :'(

The Belmont Breeze didn't look bad.  But the Black Eyed Susan is too tropical for what I know of Baltimore.  I'm thinking something a little more Edgar Allen Poe-ish. A cup of coffee with a liberal dose of absinthe to be held aloft when the horses come on the track and the band plays Maryland My Maryland sounds about right.

We'll test Dr. Colson early.  With Augsburg being a night game, there should be a great festive atmosphere around Walston-Hoover that afternoon.  I'll bring plenty of Hub City  :D, but I'm not a gumbo chef  :-[.

I expected we would get a President with an "F" word in his academic background.  I just thought it would be Football or Finance instead of Philosophy.  :-\

thanks for all the posts about Brooklyn's accident.  She is back to running around again and having her old man stay on his toes.

Speaking of Old,  read this article on Willie Gault.  48 years old and he is still running a 10.8 second 100- that's not right!

speaking of another older football player, for any chiefs fans out there-
I live 5 houses from Kevin Porter- former chiefs safety-coach of KC's arena team.. played with Derron Cherry & James Hasty I believe?

Ya'll need to come to a game this fall.  $250 million in upgrades to Arrowhead + Giants, Cowboys & Steelers come to town this year.  I think Parcells' son-in-law knows what he's doing as a GM which is a nice change from Carl Peterson.

I'm sure there are some combinations of finishes at the conference track & field meet that could prevent it, but for now it appears Wartburg will capture both the men's and women's all-sports trophies for 2008-09.

It was close.

Since we are still 17 1/2 weeks away from kickoff.  Some IIAC, but not necessarily football related info.

I recently saw an article regarding the 2008 rankings of Iowa colleges for giving, and looked up the 2006 and 2007 numbers for the IIAC as well.

Buena Vista
2006 - 6,087,576 - 5th
2007 - 2,094,706 - 9th
2008 - 2,616,028 - 9th

Central
2006 - 8,577,290 - 4th
2007 - 9,465,471 - 2nd
2008 - 9,005,829 - 4th

Coe
2006 - 24,365,844 - 1st
2007 -  8,429,822 - 4th

Cornell
2006 - 5,511,896 - 7th
2007 - 7,789,761 - 5th
2008 - 8,647,083 - 5th

Dubuque
2006 - 12,244,641 - 2nd
2007 - 28,134,349 - 1st
2008 - 10,021,563 - 2nd

Loras

2008 - 5,658,048 - 7th

Luther
2006 - 10,865,369 - 3rd
2007 -  9,313,744 - 3rd
2008 - 13,465,190 - 1st

Simpson
2006 - 3,604,209 - 9th
2007 - 3,800,849 - 8th
2008 - 3,435,348 - 8th

Wartburg
2006 - 5,724,727 - 6th
2007 - 5,877,387 - 7th
2008 - 6,922,631 - 6th

The biggest surprise on that list is how low Simpson is.

Doollittle, is that number of donors or dollars received, or both?

Interesting. I'm surprised Simpson was so low. Central's campaigns always involve some sort of "beat Simpson" theme. I guess we did just that.  ;D

Dollars received and rank in the IIAC.

I'm working on a theory about DBQ1965 retiring and then UD seeing a significant jump in donations ;D

3 years of data isn't quite enough to make a judgement on trends, but you can see a bit to judge.

I am impressed with Coe and Dubuque.  They are proving not to be just 1 year wonders and are doing a good job of bringing in money.

Central and Luther appear to have a solid alumni base that does a good  job of giving.

Cornell seems to be improving every year, and with one of the smaller alumni bases, are doing well.

My first impression of Loras and Wartburg was they should be doing better.  But taking into account both schools have recently been building, they could have recently completed large capital campaigns and are now getting back to more normal levels.  And I think 5-7 million in annual giving is a decent number for small liberal arts colleges.

If I were BV and Simpson, I think I would start to become alarmed at those numbers.  But, it is a bit early to see these numbers as a trend.

2009 will be a real test for all.  Good luck.

Wartbur's numbers from '02-04 I imagine would be really high. Not sure exactly what they are.

Doolittle-

Did the article specifically say money received (in the hand) or money donated/committed?  I'm curious b/c some times gifts are future gifts (a life insurance policy, etc.).

A few big donors really help and make things look a lot better.  I could give my whole paycheck and not change Central's rank in any year.

Was this during Wartburg's last big capital campaign?  It all depends on how the numbers are calculated......Central just "raised" well over $50M in a capital campaign, but a lot of those dollars aren't at Central yet (future gifts).

Yes, Commission Wartburg went on during that time.

One stat that groups that award grants look at is the % of alums that give, not just how much.
