CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College swept the league's All-Sports Championship Awards, capturing its seventh consecutive Iowa Conference All-Sports Championship Trophy, its 12th straight Elmer Hertel Men's Sports Championship Trophy, and its sixth Marjorie Giles Women's Sports Championship Trophy in eight years.

The IIAC All-Sports Championship Trophy is determined by each school's finish in the Giles and Hertel Trophy standings. Schools earn points in the Giles and Hertel Trophy standings based on its finish in each of the Conference's nine women's sports and 10 men's sports, receiving nine points for a first-place finish, eight points for a second-place finish, etc.

Wartburg has captured the Iowa Conference All-Sports Championship Trophy each year since its inception in 2002-03. By finishing first in both the Giles and Hertel Trophy races, Wartburg posted a total of 18 points. Luther finished second in the IIAC All-Sports Championship Trophy standings with 15 points, two points ahead of third-place Loras, and three points clear of fourth-place Central.

Fred Jackson resigns with the Bills.  Signed a new one-year deal.  Should have the chance to prove himself during Marshawn Lynch's suspension.

There us a big difference between "resigns" and "re-signs" ... and I'll bet FJ knows what it is.

That seems about right......about the same time Wartburg started accruing massive debt and buying student-athletes  :o No one said it was limited to just football players  ;D

Or when they started investing some money in talented coaches.
12 straight men's titles brings us back to about 1997.
Coach WIllis hired then
Newsom became head track coach in '98
Peth hired then
Miller fresh off his first national title.
Holst was a couple years in and won the first of 12 consecutive conf titles
and I believe that was one of the first years Gary Grace was AD
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

You are correct, the buying student-athletes and debt started accruing earlier then the "all-sports" trophies in the IIAC. Thanks for pointing that out....

And isn't it a little foolish to "think" that wartburg had the ONLY great coaches in the IIAC?? That was just one piece of their success, let's be more realistic and look at the big picture and money or lack there of had a lot more to do with it.

Kohawk Remedy

congrats to Fred Jackson on the new contract!

There may be better coaches for individual sports at other schools, but no group of mens coaches in this conference has done what these guys have over the last 12 years. I didn't say they were the only group of great coaches before, but after looking at it again, I will say that now. Coaching is a huge part of the success going on there.

For those of you that were wondering what I meant when I said that the Preakness was a bigger party than the Kentucky Derby, check this out:

Sadly, due to Pimlico's elimination of their old BYOB policy, there will be no Toilet Run this year.

Of course UD has NEVER done anything like that. I bet all those football players left nice warm Florida to come to cold snowy Iowa just because they were bored there. Oh, that's right. they were all "music" scholars.

No all those players from Florida came to UD because they sucked and did not have anywhere else to play football at.  The coaches told them they would start and botta bing botta boom.  You have yourself a roster full of transplants whom I would not trust with a potato gun.

How is Wartburg and Wartburg Theological Seminary two different schools?
WTS is a seminary in Dubuque that produces Lutheran Pastors. To my knowledge, they are not affiliated at all. There may be some minor connection.
While Wartburg is somewhat connected to the ELCA, nowadays it is no longer anymore of a college of the church than any public school. I'm sure most IIAC schools can relate.

Sorry for the late response, but I've been distracted.  I couldn't let this crap pass.  Stick with football Walston Hoover.  Wartburg is adding a pastor to its campus ministry team this year, it has a large religion department and requires all students to take two courses, it has chapel services three times a week and a well-attended evening Eucharist on Wednesday nights, has a robust community service program rooted in the church (they packed 185,000 meals for children in developing countries a week ago), they publish a faith-based literary magazine...  You get the idea.  This year they sponsored several symposia on each of the major elements of the college's mission:  leadership, service, faith and learning.  Doesn't sound much like a state school to me.

Walston Hoover

I was at one of those meetings, and the former president spent a decent chunk of time talking about how Wartburg's relationship with the ELCA is but a fraction of what it used to be.
What the school says its mission is is one thing, and I have no doubt part of that mission is practiced, but there is also a big part of that that is not practiced.
Does Philosophy still count as a religion course?
