I remember a guy...  He got injured his freshman year and didn't get much playing time for the rest of the year. Then he went on to break NCAA rushing records and eventually win a Gagliardi. That man was Justin Beaver.

I remember a guy who redshirted at UNI his freshman year.  The he transferred to Coe and went on to break 18 DIII records and 7 all Division records and then won the Gagliardi. That man was Carey Bender.

I love playing "I remember a guy who won the Gagliardi," it leaves Wartburg with nothing to say.

I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Very belated congratulations to the Coe softball team.  I watched parts of both games on Monday and was cheering them on.  I even cheered for them in 3 games they played at Central in the IIAC tourney.  Coe players and their fans were first class when they came to Pella.  Glad to see they did so well.  Now, if we only didn't have to recruit against the second place team in the nation.   :(

...In the Midwest Conference.

Just out of curiosity, and I have no idea the answer to this, but how many playoff games did Coe win when Bender was there?

After some research I found that Coe won 3 conf. titles with Bender, made the playoffs 2 times and lost in the first round both times.

Just making the playoffs out of the MWC in the 16-team field is pretty significant.

Do you have anything on who those first round losses were to?
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

Yup, you heard it here first! All I'm saying is that if you add an All-American wide reciever, a solid quarterback from a D3 powerhouse, an explosive running back, and a 6'4 230 pound athletic tight end (or defensive end)...

Does this mean that Colton Hansen is out of the picture at UD?

1991 - Do NOT KNOW. I check Coe FB media guide and d3 site and the had no luck. 1987-92 results are not available on D3.

In 1993 COe lost at St. John's 32, Coe 14 , St J lost 55-8 in semi's to Mt Union

I did some more digging on 1991 playoffs.

St. John's 75-2 over Coe in a 1991 first-round game. St J did NOT win the title or get to title game.

Alf E Newman you are so insecure.  Warhawk and I are having a nice conversation about Gagliardi trophies and you spend the rest of the day researching how to discredit Coe, Carey Bender, and The MWC.  We have a Gagliardi winner and you don't.  Deal with it.

You guys are silly.

You're right, listing "I remember" things is fun.

How about "I remember IIAC National Team Championships"?

I'm familiar with some at Wartburg and Central.  Of course Cornell may have the most impressive one when they were National Wrestling Champions.

What can each IIAC athletic department list as their national championship teams?

There is no doubt, in my mind, that Dubuque is heading in the right direction. And there is no doubt that young Zweifel will be an immediate impact player in this conference. As far as the other transfers and contending for the crown this year? That might be a reach.
I don't think a Frosh. tight end is going to come in and be an immediate upgrade over a 2nd team all-conference tight end. And I'm not sure that a running back with 17 collegiate carries under his belt or a QB that was 16 for 34 passing last year will put the Spartans over the top. Add quality depth? You bet.
Dubuques weakness last season come from being last in run defense, 2nd to last in scoring D. last in turnover margin, ect. Also notable holes to fill on the O-Line.
I'm sure coach Zweifel is more aware of his needs than I, and I'm sure he is addressing them. In time to contend this season?

I'm not saying it's a done and done deal, I'm just saying that at the end of the year I wouldn't be surprised if Dubuque was one of the top teams in the conference. If you have two quality tight ends and a great wide receiver, it can make some very scary match-ups on offense especially when they're both on the field. I think you're underestimating the "17 carry back". He's a quality young athlete who was initially recruited to be a preferred walk-on at Minnesota. The stable is just so big at UWW that the horse didn't get a shot, especially after getting injured. I remember a guy who was in this same type of position. He got injured his freshman year and didn't get much playing time for the rest of the year. Then he went on to break NCAA rushing records and eventually win a Gagliardi. That man was Justin Beaver.

Defensively, I have no clue what shape DBQ is in so enlighten me on what they have on that side of the ball. Were they young? Do they have a lot of returners?
I was playing nice, but if you insist. The 2nd team all-conference tight end graduated. He was 2nd team because there wasn't one on 1st team, because the IIAC doesn't have 15 or 16 1st team all-conference players. I'm not going to make any comments about the running back or Qb, aside from what I already said.
There was another reason that Beaver didn't get a lot of playing time his Freshman year. I'll let you fill in the blank there.
As to the defensive side of the ball? No and No.

Colton Hansen is the starting QB at UD unless someone takes it from him. However, NO ONE is guaranteed a spot based on whether they were a starter last year or not. This year will truley be competition at its best and "best player" will play regardless of anything that happened in the past. I am sure fall practice will be fun to watch.

Sorry, can't play.

I also don't have a need to try and belittle your accomplishments like Alf E.

Congratulations on both of and maybe your third national title in one year.

Where does that rank you in DIII this year for the most in '08-'09?

Warthog, are you and Alf E. brothers?
