Several old Wartburg and Simpson Football players will converge on Steamboat Rock this weekend for canoing, camping, drinking, grilling, and to rehash the great debate of who should have been the IIAC MVP in 2003.

Still not satisfied that Donneworth should have got it, eh? Come on, WH, '03 was the only decent year Simpson has had this decade. I think we should let him keep the award.  ;D

DutchFan -  now you went and did it -  Did Simpson not beat the mighty Dutch - um let's see -LAST YEAR.  2008 was the could have been year.  Lost to Wartburg by 8 on a game that turned on a couple plays, 4 huge turnovers gave a 3 point win to Coe and  p-ssed down their leg at BV with 5 or 6 turnovers.  Led conference in both total offense and total defense so you have to rate as a DECENT year.

Last year Simpson knocked off a 6-4 Dutch squad. Good job. (We lost to Loras last year, if that tells you anything about how OUR year went.) It's funny -- a completely LOUSY season by our standards (6-4 or 7-3) you consider a successful season. Interesting how different our perspectives are, huh?

Following up on part of dutchie's post about the decade... it's almost over. Were in our last year of football for the decade which seems crazy...
What is everyone's rank of the teams of the 00's
things to consider:
IIAC championships
Playoff births
record (maybe DD can dig everyones record over the past 10 years up)
how far teams advanced into the playoffs

Yeah, but Steil threw 7 interceptions in 1 game!!!  1979 against Ithaca  :o

We moved away from Iowa in 1972 and since then I've seen UD play football only about 5 or 6 times.  And would you believe, one of those times was the UD-Ithaca game, played at Dubuque Senior High.  What a let-down that day ... especially with the interceptions.

Don't have time to look everything up now, actually busy at work for the forseeable future.  Maybe tonight after the kids are in bed.

I do know for this decade we have
Central 6 conference championships
Wartburg 4 conference championships
Coe 3 conference championships

I believe Wartburg has about 3 or 4 more conference wins than Central this decade.  Then there is a bit of a gap down to Coe.  Then there is a bit of a gap and you have BV, Loras, Luther, and Simpson all bunched up together...no idea of the order.  Then there is a bit of a gap and I think Cornell has 1 more conference win this decade than Dubuque.  I'll leave Billie Penn and UIU out of all that.

No idea about playoff berths or who has the most playoff wins or who has advanced the furthest this decade.

Thunderbolt

My picks for the five best teams of this decade would include:

1- 00 Dutch
2- 00 Knights
3- 03 Knights
4- 06 Dutch
5- 07 Dutch

I don't think I'll even attempt to rank them 1 to 5. But I would say the 00 Dutch team would be 1 or 2.

What has two thumbs and is interviewing Mike Ditka tonight?

Instead of the last 10 years shouldn't we just count games of this decade?  And also, in 2003 Upper Iowa played a full IIAC schedule but they weren't considered an IIAC team anymore.  The Peacocks were in transition into D2 then.

Hey sportsknight, see if you can antagonize Ditka into throwing a punch at you.  That would be fun to watch.  Or, at the very least, ask him a question about the IIAC and see if he has an answer for you, or tries to BS you, or just stairs at you with a blank face.  Either way, congrats on getting an interview with the man.  He is a legend.

doolittledog:  Our friends at D3Football were all over this.  The 2003 conference records did not reflect UIU as conference games.

As to this decade (the 2000s) or a decade (10 years) of games it doesn't make much difference.  In 1999 the league finish was: (1) Wartburg (2) Central (3) Buena Vista (4) Simpson (t5) Coe (t5) Loras (7) Cornell [8] Dubuque (9) Luther.  With the exception of the Norse, this is fairly close to what the 10 year numbers look like.

So if it makes you feel better you can recalculate the chart.  The question is which decade do you think 2000 belongs to?  Techically the decades would be 1991-2000 & 2001-2010.

Your right the Dutch really did Suck last year, we out yarded them 414 to 250 but the Dutch Horseshoe Up the --- somehow kept it close.  My point being the Storm had a Decent not championship year and with ball boucing differently only a couple times they very much could have been conference champs.  They even out gained the Knights by over 100 yards but scoreboard is all the counts.  You used the Word decent - I'm sure every Simpson player was disappointed they didn't make the key plays when needed but at least they were DECENT and DIDN'T  SUCK  LIKE THE DUTCH    GEEZ it's fun to hate Central.

Oh, no!  We went through all this over and over with the millenium! :o

I tended to agree with those who said the new millenium began on January 1, 2001.  I also recognize that we purists would have missed out on a helluva party a year earlier! ;D

Storm Chaser:

You have a point about the Storm last year.  I was at the Wartburg game in Indianola.  It was one of those situations where after the game Wartburg fans asked; "How in the hell did the Knights win that thing?"

The answer; "Wartburg scored more points."

Sometimes the ball bounces just right.  Wartburg got the bounces at Indianola last year.

Observations about the 10 year IIAC chart.

1) Only Wartburg and Central have regular season non-conference winning percentages that are lower than their conference winning percentage.

2) Cornell apparently knows how to pick "weak sisters" for non-conference contests.

3) With the exception of Coe, all the other teams have another conference foe that has a 10 year record very similar to their own.

4) Teams with the best records wear red tones (red & orange)  The bottom four teams wear blue or purple jerseys. (this must be an IIAC thing, since it doesn't pan out when you look at recent Stagg Bowl teams)

Warthog  - I need to send you the positive Karma thing but still relatively new to this board so not real clear on how to do so.  Nevertheless - thanks for positives on Storm - it was an oh so close year.
