Several old Wartburg and Simpson Football players will converge on Steamboat Rock this weekend for canoing, camping, drinking, grilling, and to rehash the great debate of who should have been the IIAC MVP in 2003.

Still not satisfied that Donneworth should have got it, eh? Come on, WH, '03 was the only decent year Simpson has had this decade. I think we should let him keep the award.  ;D

DutchFan -  now you went and did it -  Did Simpson not beat the mighty Dutch - um let's see -LAST YEAR.  2008 was the could have been year.  Lost to Wartburg by 8 on a game that turned on a couple plays, 4 huge turnovers gave a 3 point win to Coe and  p-ssed down their leg at BV with 5 or 6 turnovers.  Led conference in both total offense and total defense so you have to rate as a DECENT year.

Last year Simpson knocked off a 6-4 Dutch squad. Good job. (We lost to Loras last year, if that tells you anything about how OUR year went.) It's funny -- a completely LOUSY season by our standards (6-4 or 7-3) you consider a successful season. Interesting how different our perspectives are, huh?

Your right the Dutch really did Suck last year, we out yarded them 414 to 250 but the Dutch Horseshoe Up the --- somehow kept it close.  My point being the Storm had a Decent not championship year and with ball boucing differently only a couple times they very much could have been conference champs.  They even out gained the Knights by over 100 yards but scoreboard is all the counts.  You used the Word decent - I'm sure every Simpson player was disappointed they didn't make the key plays when needed but at least they were DECENT and DIDN'T  SUCK  LIKE THE DUTCH    GEEZ it's fun to hate Central.

Please -- the Dutch didn't "suck" last year. Using your numbers, we were outgained by the Storm by 150 yards, and it still took Simpson until OT to seal the deal. With those offensive numbers, the game should have been a lock well before OT, right?

Listen, you guys had more points when the time ran out last year. Far be it from a Central fan to take anything away from an OT win -- we've had our share. Making big plays when it counts is the hallmark of a champion. We know all about this -- our football trophy case is filled with championship trophies.  ;)

Storm Chaser:

You have a point about the Storm last year.  I was at the Wartburg game in Indianola.  It was one of those situations where after the game Wartburg fans asked; "How in the hell did the Knights win that thing?"

The answer; "Wartburg scored more points."

Sometimes the ball bounces just right.  Wartburg got the bounces at Indianola last year.

Warthog  - I need to send you the positive Karma thing but still relatively new to this board so not real clear on how to do so.  Nevertheless - thanks for positives on Storm - it was an oh so close year.

My two cents on the past decade debate:  If you think any team other than the 2003 Knights as the best IIAC team of the past 10 years, you might need to get your head examined.  Up until the postseason, nobody they played even belonged on the same field as that team.  A completely shut-down defense, an offense that could run or pass equally well, and specialists that didn't take anything off the table.

The 2007 Central team was probably 2nd best in my mind, and even though they also went unbeaten in the regular season and went further into the playoffs, they didn't completely destroy their opposition like the '03 Knights.

DD-  Most Simpson fans/alumns can't count that high....so I doubt your explanation helped much!

Just to back up my point, the 2007 Dutch won by an average score of 32-19, and had 6 of their 12 wins come by 8 points or fewer.

The 2003 Knights won by an average score of 35-10.  Not a single one of their wins came by a margin of 10 points or fewer.  They scored 35+ seven times, and were never held to less than 20 points.  The defense allowed more than 20 points just twice, and on eight occaisons, held the opponent to eight points or fewer.  That Central team failed to score more than 17 points in 3 games, and held just one opponent to single digits.

Results do matter, so its hard to deny the 07 Dutch team, but the 06 Dutch with a healthy MVP running back and a defense that allowed 122 fewer points (in two less games) was a better team, in my opinion.

Statistically, I would put the 00 Dutch up there with the 03 Knights. But a head exam couldn't hurt me either.

I know that when we talk about the best team of the decade, we mean for the whole season, but I will say the best team I saw was the Central team the beat St. Johns in 07.  Everyone finally got healthy at the same time and played their A game at the same time.

Just look at the size difference between the 03' Knights and the 07' Dutch.  Enough said.  Those guys were monsters.  But I will give the 07' Central team a lot of props because they went further in the playoffs than the 03' Knights did and you can argue that the team that Wartburg ran into was tougher, but 5 INT's later and it might have been a different deal.  Pissing your pants in the big game does not help solidify this cause.  I have to give it to the 07' Dutch as the team of the 2000's.

BTW:  The scoring margin tells me nothing.  All that tells me is that Wartburg played in an IIAC that was not as competitive as the Central team considering their post season run.  They were more prepared to face the difficult games more so than Wartburg was.  Now dont hail me a Dutch supporter because BV has only beaten them once in 1000000 years, and I would love to kick the crap out of them in 09.

As a man once said on this board.  There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.  I believe Mark Twain said that to being with.

Three months from today I will be at Sam Greeley Field, home of the Rockford College Regents, watching the Stan Zweifel coached UD Spartans kick-off a new era in football.

Where will you be three months from today?

One of Wartburg Football , IA Football &  Coach Willis' biggest fans passed away this morning.

Grandpa Bob Devine was a Great man and an even better Grandfather/father.
I've never seen or spoken to my real dad but it didn't matter because my Grandpa was always there for me.

Most of  you don't know who he is, but if you were ever at one of my games you would have known him.
He would yell " Atta boy boom-boom" on every one of  my tackles.  He gave me that nickname when I was 2.

When I graduated from WB, I figured that he and my grandma whom were married 58 years  missed 1 of my sporting events from Junior High thru college.  that was about 95 football games alone.  Throw in Track and basketball and it's 200 events easy.
He was holding on as long as he could for my daughter to be born as my wife  is due anyday now.

words can't describe how much I'm going to miss him.

It's been a pretty ****ty 30th b-day for me  today.

There is nothing more any of us can add, Dave.  What you have written is a fitting and touching tribute.  The warthog clan sends our deepest heart felt sympathy to you on Bob's passing.

By the way, "Atta boy boom-boom!"
