One of Wartburg Football , IA Football &  Coach Willis' biggest fans passed away this morning.

Grandpa Bob Devine was a Great man and an even better Grandfather/father.
I've never seen or spoken to my real dad but it didn't matter because my Grandpa was always there for me.

Most of  you don't know who he is, but if you were ever at one of my games you would have known him.
He would yell " Atta boy boom-boom" on every one of  my tackles.  He gave me that nickname when I was 2.

When I graduated from WB, I figured that he and my grandma whom were married 58 years  missed 1 of my sporting events from Junior High thru college.  that was about 95 football games alone.  Throw in Track and basketball and it's 200 events easy.
He was holding on as long as he could for my daughter to be born as my wife  is due anyday now.

words can't describe how much I'm going to miss him.

It's been a pretty ****ty 30th b-day for me  today.

davedevine ...

Your Grandpa sounds like a guy I would love to have known.  Your simple tribute to him was great ... just the kind of words that would be welcome at any memorial service.

Peace be with you ... as well as the thoughts of many of us on the IIAC board.

That was a great tribute dave, our thoughts are with you.  You were raised by some wonderfull people.

Mr. Ypsi

Dave,

Obviously I did not know your grandfather, but after your moving tribute, I almost feel like I did.  Hang in there (and as Happy a Birthday as is possible under the circumstances).

coco

Dave,
My condolences on the death of your grandfather. You two obviously had a very special relationship, and he must have been so proud of you all your life.

thanks for all the nice emails/posts.
I received a very  nice email from Mrs Coco this afternoon and I've never even met her or Mr. Coco.

one last part.
I was fortunate enough to talk to him  Friday afternoon before I teed off.  I knew he didn't have much time left and I told him I'd make a few birdies for him.  I had 3 birdie putts within inches of dropping and none went in for me.  As he would say, "I was burning the edges"

I woke up this morning and decided to go play because I didn't make any birdies on Friday.

I ended up with 3 birdies this morning and was 3' from a hole in one.
I was walking alone on the course, but I know for a fact that he was there with me. (except for maybe the 3 double bogeys I had  ;D )

how long until camp starts?

My two cents on the past decade debate:  If you think any team other than the 2003 Knights as the best IIAC team of the past 10 years, you might need to get your head examined.  Up until the postseason, nobody they played even belonged on the same field as that team.  A completely shut-down defense, an offense that could run or pass equally well, and specialists that didn't take anything off the table.

The 2007 Central team was probably 2nd best in my mind, and even though they also went unbeaten in the regular season and went further into the playoffs, they didn't completely destroy their opposition like the '03 Knights.

i was thinking more along the lines of the program of the '00s, not the best team in a single year.

Taking the last 9 years.  I will use a decade as 2000-2009 even though I know you can argue otherwise.  But for this decade with 1 year remaining in it.  The 3 schools that have won conference titles...

In conference play...

Wartburg 64-12
Central  61-15
Coe - 50-26

Conference titles

Central - 6
Wartburg - 4
Coe - 3

Playoff appearances
Central - 5
Wartburg - 4
Coe - 2

Playoff records
Wartburg 4-4
Central 4-5
Coe  1-2

Wartburg over the last 9 seasons in conference play...
2nd, 2nd, t-1st, 1st, t-1st, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st

Central over the last 9 seasons in conference play...
1st, 1st, t-1st, t-6th, t-3rd, t-1st, 1st, 1st, t-5th

Coe over the last 9 seasons in conference play...
t-4th, t-3rd, t-1st, t-6th, t-1st, t-1st, t-3rd, t-3rd, t-5th

UW-La Crosse announced last Friday that they will be cutting baseball and men's tennisl (still pending talks with WIAC) next year due to budget.  Any word out there of IIAC schools doing the same?  It's a shame to see D3 schools, or any colleges for that matter, having to cut programs.

That's interesting considering that the NCAA just cut the cost of annual dues for all divisions.  Not that a lower cost there would completely alleviate any financial problems, but I'd have thought it might have prevented some programs from seeing the ax.

My thoughts on this, and it's just a guess.  Is that state schools tend to rely on state funding and never build up much of an endowment.  Neither do you find alums of those schools all that eager to give to their alma mater.  Directional state schools tend to be a place to spend 4 years and then move on with your life.  I think that alums from smaller private schools develop more of an attachment to their school and therefore give more to that school in their adult lives.  Therefore, when we have economic downturns, private schools with smaller enrollments and larger endowments, won't need to cut budgets near as much as state schools with larger enrollments and smaller endowments.

But I could be way off on that.
