Who has the most ties to IIAC schools?

Not this guy.  Had 3 cousins on my mom's side attend Simpson (two football players and a trainer).  On Old Man Sportsknight's side of the family, I'm the first, and to this point, only one to attend college somewhere other than Iowa, UNI, Loras, or Depaul.

I should probably be a bit more aware of my family history.

I have a great aunt and uncle that are Central grads.  Now 91 and 92 and living in TX.  Their oldest daughter is a UD grad and was there at the same time as DBQ1965!!!  I have another great uncle that spent a year at Cornell before moving back home and going into the family construction business.  It was the depression and he figured a job was a good thing to have.  Of course Cornell wasn't a member of the IIAC at that time.  After that it's been pretty much large state schools for everyone in my family until I came along and upset things.

Some of you might remember this former QB/linebacker/TE/slot back/etc from a couple of years ago. I think he played at least 5 positions while at Cornell. Anyway, good luck to Hades. He's got some work to do.

Devine,

Saw your grandfather's funeral announcement in the Dubuque paper today.  I'd offer to take you out for a couple beers while you're in the neighborhood, but I'll be in Chicago this weekend.  Just have my cousin pay for a couple rounds when you get back to KC.  I'm sure he probably owes you some anyway. ;)

In other news, sounds like a couple former UD Spartans are going to be continuing their careers for the new Dubuque Bruisers semi-pro team.  The team plays in the same league as the Cedar Valley Vikings of Waterloo and the Iowa Lightning of Des Moines, if anyone is familiar with those squads.  I know Jermar Jackson is on the roster.  Looks like Thoni Oriental as well.  Roster can be found here:  http://hometeamsonline.com/teams/default.asp?u=DLOCASCIO&t=c&s=football&p=roster

I guess the team had a hell of a time finding a place that would actually let them play their six home games.  Loras said no, UD said no, the Dubuque school district nixed them playing at Dalzell, etc.  So they are playing their home games the same place I did in high school, 25 miles away from Dubuque at Cascade High School.

Just doing a quick scan of that roster I see Mike Mandot on there.  He has been the strength coach at UD.  Started at UD as a player before an injury forced him to stop playing, so that is interesting he is on the roster as a player.

Also interesting they were turned down to play at Dalziel as well as Loras and UD.  I wonder if it has anything to do with money or insurance.  I know UD has been talking to the Dubuque school district about having Hempstead and Senior playing their home games at Chalmers like Wahlert plays their games at Loras.  Chalmers would certainly be a step up from Dalziel...and would be good advertising for UD around the city of Dubuque as well as some revenue for UD I am sure.

From what I've heard, the school district folks were concerned about wear and tear on the field at Dalzell.  They already host 8-10 games there every fall, and may even be in the process of re-seeding the field right now.  With Loras and UD having artificial surfaces, obviously they don't have to worry about that.  I would imagine they probably had some worry about how much support staff (admissions, concessions, scoreboard op, etc) would need to be around.  With the economy the way it is, I'm sure they are just like everyone else and want to avoid some of their maintenance folks picking up overtime and whatnot.  I imagine the Bruisers could have cleared up some of those issues by offering to find their own crews for that or offering a portion of the gate/concessions.  But what do I know?

I believe I'm correct concerning the basic colors in the IIAC (I'm not quibbling over tones of color)

Buena V. - Navy Blue/Gold
Central - Red/White
Coe Coll - Red/Gold
Cornell - Purple/White
Dubuque - Blue/White
Loras C. - Purple/Gold
Luther C. - Blue/White
Simpson - Red/Gold
Wartburg - Black/Orange

Recent departures:

Upper IA. - Light Blue/White
Wm. Penn - Blue/Gold

So for you historians; What colors were uniforms of former IIAC schools?  Did any former conference members have uniforms that were; green, silver, brown, pink ;), etc.?
BE ORANGE

Also for the historians...have any of the schools changed their colors over the years?

UNI was in the IIAC from I think '23 - '35  They are Purple/Gold
Iowa Wesleyan was in until the mid 60's  They are Blue/White
Parsons was also in until the mid 60's  No idea
St. Ambrose left in the mid 50's along with Loras.  Blue/White I believe
Westmar was another school that left in the 60's...what's up with that.  Colors???  Where's Lance Harbor when we need him???
Morningside left in the mid 30's.  They are Maroon/White
Can't forget about Ellsworth.  They were in for a few years before becoming a junior college.  No idea on colors.

So I guess Wartburg is about the only school to somewhat think a little bit outside of the box and go with orange/black.  Otherwise you get blue/white...purple/gold or white...some form of red-maroon/gold-white combinations.

Should be interesting to see if anyone has any info for Parsons, Westmar or Ellsworth.  Or, if schools have changed colors over the years.  Or if they have changed their team names over the years.

From reading the history of Dubuque I know their colors have always been blue/white.  The blue and white were how their sports teams were referred to until going with Spartans I believe in the late 20's.  They were also occationally reffered to as the Bulldogs before that time but that name never stuck.

DBQ1965

According to "The Iowa Conference Story" ... former IIAC school include St. Ambrose, Morningside, Iowa Teachers (now UNI), Des Moines U., Westmar, and Ellsworth.

Additionally, in the 20s and 30s there were two other schools listed ...  Western Union and Columbia.  I'll have to research that some more.

I can help you there.  Western Union became Westmar...before coming Teikyo Westmar right before closing in the late 90's.

Columbia is now Loras.  Loras started as St. Josephs.  In the early 1900's they changed their name to Dubuque College.  Dubuque German College and Seminary objected to this and it went to the Iowa Supreme Court.  They decided both schools should change their names.  St. Josephs/Dubuque College became Columbia College before changing again to Loras in the 1930's.  Dubuque German College and Seminary became the University of Dubuque in 1920.

So maybe that history is the planted seed leading to the rivalry - sometimes hard feelings - and competition between UD and Loras.

Since there was some Cornell baseball talk here yesterday, I think its worth noting that Rams junior pitcher Chris Handke was drafted by the Dodgers in the 41st round yesterday.

You can now get your Wartburg Football replica jerseys.

Jr. gave me his 2008 Jersey for Christmas...game worn complete with holes.  It's size Large.  If you've met Jr., you'd wonder how he was able to fit into it.  It is very stretchy.  Undersized I suppose to give less to grab onto.

It was my favorite gift.  Even better than the Wireless N Dual Band Router.
