52 degrees in La Porte City this morning.  I mowed over some fallen leaves yesterday evening.  In the clearest sign of karm yet...my daughter asked me when we could go to a football game.  I'm ready for some football!!!

Start HS Football Camp in 45 minutes....it's getting really close
We just ended 5 days of 3-a-days today. My feet hurt.
Get going for good Monday
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Dubuque games of the year...

09/05:  Dubuque @ Rockford...so begins the Zweifel era at UD.  Away game is nice and against a team the Spartans should beat.

09/12:  UW Platteville @ Dubuque...home debut, plus a night game, Zweifel would love to win a game against a WIAC team, Mrs Doolittle and I will be in attendance.

09/17:  Central @ Dubuque...2007 lose by 3 in 3 ot's to the Dutch...2008 Central kicks a 45yd FG with 1 minute left to win by 3.  Dubuque would like to beat Central for the 1st time since 1987

09/26:   Dubuque @ Cornell...Good chance Dubuque is sitting on the wrong side of .500 coming into this game.  Tough call to go into Mt. Vernon against an improving Cornell team.  (ask Central last year)

10/03:  Dubuque @ Coe...2 years ago Dubuque left Cedar Rapids with an ot win against Coe on the Kohawks homecoming weekend.  The Spartans would like to leave Cedar Rapids again with a win on the Kohawks homecoming weekend.  Outlook murky.

10/10:  Loras @ Dubuque...Spartans homecoming and it's a 6pm start.  Magic 8 ball says "lots of drunk Dubuquers"  Dubuque has won their last 2 games against Loras @ Chalmers Field.  Let's hope this year makes 3 because Mrs. Doolittle and I will be at this game as well.  Night games in Dubuque equals doolittle in-laws on babysitting duty ;D  Magic 8 ball also says "Spartans at .500 following this game"

10/17:  Dubuque @ Simpson...I believe it was 2 years ago Dubuque was trailing at halftime 20-7 @ Simpson...prompting doolittle to leave the house in disgust to go mow.  2 hours later I come in to find the Spartans won the game 35-20...prompting "lucky mower" tag by me.  This year I will have the mower sitting by the door...but I suspect UD is walking into a buzz saw this year in Indianola.

10/24:  Wartburg @ Dubuque...by now the Spartan players might be getting the grasp of what Zweifel is wanting from them.  Dubuque has played Warty tough the last 3 years...Warty should still be the favorite that saturday.  Mrs. doolittle and I will be in Iowa City for a wedding between a Wartburg alum and a Loras alum.  God must be mad at me!!!

10/31:  Bye week...team gets to go out trick-or-treating pain free.

11/07:  Luther @ Dubuque...nearing the end of the season.  Dubuque either rolls over and plays dead against the Norse...or things are looking up and we have a hard fought game between two smash mouth teams with coaches with ties to the WIAC.  I think Mrs. doolittle and I will be in Mt. Vernon, hopefully trading some Hub City Brew for some genuine SoCal Carne Asada from the Heys clan.  AND getting to see Cornell getting a deserved IIAC win...against that purple team from the wrong side of Dubuque :P

11/14:  Dubuque @ BV...long trip to Storm Lake for the last game of the season.  Again, depending on how the season has gone...the Spartans either roll over and let the Beavers run wild...or it's another hard hitting game.  Something tells me even if Dubuque is playing well, BV gets a win here.

I think things are looking up at BV and Simpson.  Wartburg is Wartburg.  Jury is still out for Central and Luther.  I think last year was a fluke for Loras and they are looking at some down years for football.  Cornell and Dubuque I think might struggle this year.  But things are looking better for the two programs.

Bigger home opening crowd last year or this year?

I talked to someone with knowledge of  the AP program and 1 condition is there will NOT be cameras in locker room etc like last year.

Man on lawnmower during beer run charged with DUI

(AP) – 4 hours ago

BELLEVILLE, Ill. — With a revoked license because of a previous drunken-driving conviction, Dennis Cretton shouldn't drive. But authorities said that didn't stop the 49-year-old man from drunkenly driving up to a gas station for more beer — on his yellow riding lawnmower.

Cretton was charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence after neighbors reported he was weaving in and out of traffic on his lawnmower Friday night.

When deputies tried to stop him, authorities said Bretton drove the mower into his home's front yard, his 12-pack of Milwaukee's Best spilling onto the ground along the way.

Cretton was free on $10,000 bond. Calls to his home went unanswered Tuesday.

AEN,

If I had never left Dubuque maybe that would have been me ;)

About six weeks ago the co-worker and I were on the way back from a story in Decorah.  Was a late June Friday night, around 6:30 or 7:00, and just a couple minutes after driving past the "Dubuque County" sign, we spot a guy on a riding lawnmower with a can of Busch Light (AKA Dubuque County Champagne) in hand.  No joke.

(Purple)  Games of the Week
11/7:  Loras @ Cornell - Cornell Senior Day.  Jr.'s last home game.  Both Cuban side and Scottish-German side will be in attendance.

11/14:  Cornell @ Coe - Jr.'s last collegiate game ( :'(  )  Would like to be in attendance...at least Coe videocasts.

You have the plane ticket out here so that isn't a problem.  So if it is lodging you need the next week I am sure your fellow IIAC posters could put you up.  You need to be at K. Ray for your sons last game.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

LOL -- that brings me back to my college days. One of my wheelchair-bound friends was charged with a DUI when she was "driving" home from the bar one nightin her mechanical wheelchair....on the sidewalk (sort of). We teased her for weeks....

You guys have 3 practices per day with all the kids...or do you divide them up between levels?  Either way, that is impressive!

My only reason of asking is this.....paying $2k w/ no loans vs. paying $2k w/ $10k in loans per yr is a big difference to me.  I would consider student loans part of the students annual cost to attend school.  I'm not very smart, but my wife is and she got a lot of grants/scholarships at Central AND paid A LOT more than $2k per yr.  I was just trying to get clarificiation/understand how the $2k doolittle reference was calculated.  Thanks.

I didn't press the man on how the 2k figure came into play.  It came up because he said his son started out at UNI, had a 50% scholarship, but after leaving for Wartburg found out he could play D3 football for about half what he paid at UNI and said it was 2k at Wartburg.  Other than that we didn't get into the specifics of it all.

I'm sorry but the guy doesn't know what he was talking about, unless this happend about 1975. My son is on a regent academic scholarship and I can say that room and board and books add up to almost $9,000. Unless the kid lived off campus he could only have to pay Wartburg $2000 for books and fees, but add in rent and food and it cost a lot more than that.

[Unless Central gives out aid like Wartburg ;)

I recently talked to the father of a former Wartburg football player.  After all the aid was doled out his son went to Wartburg for 2k per year.  I'm guessing most kids didn't get that kind of aid...but if they did...and Central is similar in their aid...that would work out to...

2k x 50 = 100k in tuition
The schools wouldn't be open if that were the case.  I'm guessing that EVEN at Wartburg  :o that dad was probably forgetting the cost of student loans.

9/19: Wartburg @ Cornell - 1st chance at that elusive IIAC win
I'll be pulling for a Rams win.  With the way you played Central at the end of the year last year, why not put on some purple shades and say "it could happen?"   :)

Exhausting for coaches. Players are young and can handle it.
First 3 days of next week are going to be boring. Pads come on Thursday.

I like your thinking here...   :)

The shades are on (work with me here)...  Last year at Wartburg, we gave up 2 pick 6's, we came up empty twice inside the 10.  We outgained the Kaniggets by a rather significant margin...we just couldn't finish the drives (Admittedly, Wartburg's D had a lot to say about that).

But a little creative mathematical regression follows:

Subtract the 2 Pick 6's   37-14 becomes 23-14

Add the TD and Field goal on the two inside the 10 trips:  Rams 24 - Kaniggets 23   Upset of the century!

;D

You're right Klompen...it could happen.    ;)

I thinking that I would stay the week, with the rest of the clan heading back to CA after the Loras game.  Maybe I'll camp in a cornfield.

Watching and reading coverage of ISU media day makes me thankful that we open 3 weeks from tonight and not 9 days later.
I know there won't be IIAC games, but are there any college games that last weekend of August?
