Wasn't me. I would never look that stuff up. My mind is like an elephants and I could have just told you the results of those games. It was SK. I, too, got confused with all the text boxes/

Sorry WH. Tough to follow through all that.

The Kicking Game and it effect on winning.  Which would rather have? A great kicker and a mediocre punter   21 (45.7%)
A great punter and a mediocre kicker   24 (52.2%)
Kickers/punters...who needs 'em?   1 (2.2%)

I am the 1 who needs 'em. Raider kickers also fix Maytag appliances while at the games. It really helps keep them busy.

Last year, 6 FG attempts and 19 punts in 15 games. Who needs 'em? ;D

WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

Well, I think the holder would get manhandled after every touchdown if there weren't a kicker back there with him. I think Mount Union might score a TD or two.

MUC 2008 stats actually record 28 punts in 15 games...

In their only close game vs. UW-W, MUC punted 3 times.

UW-W's kicker missed 2-4 FG's, MUC was 1-1 and the final score 31-26 would have turned if UW-W converted 1 more and the MUC kicker botched his only attempt.

As I recall UW-W's kicker was one of the best in school history; but at least one of his misses was inside 40 yards ("makeable?").

MUC's punt inside the 15 resulted in UW-W driving 87 yards to make it 31-26.

I would guess both these teams would place the higher value on the kicker...

As much as people bang on Kickers and/or punters they have one the most important/stressful positions on the team. They see the field a very small amount of time, but when they do see the field the pressure is on. Whether its punting to gain better field position. Or kicking six field goals to win a game, ala Cornell vs. Luther 2007!!!!!

I would agree that the kickers/punters get the raked over the coals a lot.  I don't think they get it more than the other players.  I don't think they have it any more stressful that any other position on the field from a coaching stand point.  A qb makes a bad read or throw and the coaches know it, the running back makes a bad read and does not hit the right hole the coaches know it, a lineman makes a bad block or misses an assignment and the coaches know it.  In short I don't think the kickers or punters have that much more pressure on them.

The UWW kicker is Jeff Schebler, a Davenport, IA native.  He already holds th e Division III career record for field goals. He enters his senior season with 61 FG's after eclipsing the previous record of 52 FGS, set  by a Mount Union kicker in the late 1960s.

I bet he'd like to have 2 more...

He missed from 39 and 42 yards...Would those be, in general terms, well within his range?

As a general rule I have not been impressed by most of the D3 kickers I have seen...I would take the top 3 HS kickers from the San Diego area, year-in and year-out over what I have seen watching D3 over the years.

Same with Iowa. A handful of D1 kickers every year in the state.
Kicking is one of those things that the physical skillset is the same regardless of Division so the good ones are going to be getting paid to play.

Yes and no.  Mossbrucker is the first U of Iowa player to get a scholarship.  Daniel Murray is paying his way.  So did Nate Kaeding.  Cundiff from Drake would have been paying his way as well.  At least I was told that about U of Iowa.  But yeah, the good ones will find their way to D1 schools.

I think soccer, only having recently become popular in Iowa, will have an effect on the kicking games of football teams in our state.  Small schools that now have soccer will most likely have kids that will end up at IIAC schools.

There are some decent kickers Heys,  not to bust on your Rams but I think they have trouble filling that postion.  Central has had ok kickers lately.  Viggars is pretty accurate but not a huge leg.  I think he is good from 40 but I think that from 45-50 its 4 down territory for most schools at this level.  I think even at the D1 level they struggle to find guys that can kick 50 yarders.

I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Thought for the day:

In America you've got American football and baseball and all those other ball games, soccer has become a little niche that the women have kind of filled.

I agree with you...there are some decent ones and I would classify the Central duo as in the upper echelon in the conference.

As for Cornell's...ugh.   Don Bladt had to do it last year and it was unfair to expect too much from him.  We haven't had a decent punter in the 3 years I've followed the Rams and IMHO our lack of a placekicker has cost us games.  You want to win the close ones, you've got to have consistent positive contribution from the kicking game.

I put the poll up because I believe the kicking game wins you 1 game every year and possibly 2 or 3.  And the lack thereof loses just as many...I've witnessed it firsthand the last 3 years.

To be fair I was speaking of San Diego kickers not punters.  We've had some real good kickers the last several years...an offshoot of strong soccer clubs in the area.
