CR Gazette Article on Cornells TE
Californian finds a home among the tall corn (and beans) in Iowa

By Jeff Johnson - The Gazette

Alex Macey knew about the corn. Youre from out of state, you always know about the corn. I never came on a visit. I took a shot in the dark, the Cornell College tight end said.I had no idea what it looked like here. All I expected was corn. I didnt even know there were beans. For some reason, Macey decided four years ago to leave the Pacific Ocean paradise of Oceanside, Calif., for the corn and the beans.

Alex Macey has a chance to be an All-American candidate at tight end,Dillon said. His improvement from his freshman year to where he is now ... he is literally uncoverable right now (for) an inside defensive player. I dont think theres a linebacker or a safety that can try to lock him up and cover him right now.

Hes 6-6, 250 pounds, and hes a 4.6 40 guy. Hes got the total package. Weve got to manufacture ways to get him the ball. And manufacture ways to get some victories. Or at least one. Cornell has lost 18 straight games, 28 straight Iowa Conference games.

Actually, there were two reasons he went to Mount Vernon college and football.

I just wanted to play football, and they gave me the best shot to do that,Macey said.At first, I wasnt really planning on going to a (four-year) college. I was planning on going to a community college. But they got me in, they showed me I can do well in school. They did their job here, I did my job back home, and here I am. You wont find a more inviting receiving target in the Iowa Conference than the 6-foot-6, sideburn-clad 250-pounder.

Thats good since Cornell will be breaking in a new quarterback this season.

Macey emerged with 37 catches in just eight games in 2008. He has 59 in his career.

If Coach Matt Dillon has anything to say about it, and he does, look for that career reception total to be matched this season.

And the world sees his "super sweet Lew Alcindor" muttonhops.   :D

Buying about 10 copies of the CRG right now.   ;D

Heys Jr needs to grow out the "sweet Lew Alcindor chops" into the full "Bill Walton beard" from his Portland Trailblazers days!!!

I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

Stats from Central look nice at first glimpse...504 of offense...374 rushing (look our for Lackey IIAC) Granted got to take the opponent into consideration though...good start for the Dutch!

Just got home from Minahan Stadium, so not writing on the Blackberry anymore.

Wow, what a game.

Wartburg has an excellent offensive line. Made some huge holes and gave the QB lots of time. He's very good as well. WU used at least three running backs, with #1 the best of the bunch.

St. Norbert was playing catchup most of the day, but was matching WU TD for TD all afternoon.

Wartburg was hurt by penalties. Lots of them. One personal foul blow to the head was questionable, and one pass interference called on an orange Knight defender was a bad call. But even taking those two, WU had too many penalties on both sides of the ball.

SNC had two turnovers, both inside the WU 30. But WU couldn't convert either time. The second SNC turnover was with less than 3:00 left, but SNC forced the punt and drove down the field in the last 1:40.

SNC was stopped at the 1 as the clock rolled. Finally spiked it with 3.5 left, but then got a delay penalty, backing up to the 6. A fade pass TD was successful as time expired. And, despite another SNC penalty on the EXP, the kick was good. Bonus football.

SNC scored on 2 plays.

WU got down to the 2, and was eventually faced with a 4th and goal from the 2. Tried to run it in but was stopped.

Final, OT
St. Norbert - 42
Wartburg - 35

Sat by some very nice Wartburg people.

All in all a very entertaining game. Closely contested. Some nice plays and players on both sides of the ball. Wartburg just had too many penalties, couldn't convert on turnovers and couldn't put SNC away. SNC hung in there all afternoon, didn't let WU get away from them, and then made the plays at the crunch time.

Coe is going to win every game this year scoring nine on avg. and keeping the opposition averaging 7.

Sorry. Put it on the Midwest page, the Iowa score page and regular Iowa page. Wasn't sure how the Iowa folks check those things...

Went to the Loras-Monmouth game.  Monmouth is definitely the real deal.  However, I have never been so offended listening to opposing fans!  There were a group of students and former players standing near the visitor stands being overboard obnoxious.  They were even yelling ethnic slurs toward McGrew on the sideline, who is a student assistant this year.  Never been more proud to be an Iowa Conference fan!!! It may get heated, but I've never heard anything like this before!

Coe's offense was much more effective than I thought it would be, but they better find someone who can snap the ball.  Without the bad snaps the game isn't nearly as close and my ulcer doesn't get nearly as big as it got today.

Walston,
a late congrats to you on your monkey stomping Friday night.

a couple things I've seen & read today that really perplexed me.

1) UNI having 2 consecutive FG's blocked (they clearly outplayed the Hawks and will have a hell of a season- again)

2) WB losing with being +2 in turnover margin And their  defensive stats from today's game.

gave up 515+ total yards  QB was 28 of 37 for 314 yards and four touchdowns
AND  they ran for 210 yds at 6.6 per rush?!

I haven't seen these kind of numbers given up since the ass kicking we took against PLU and they won the nat'l championship by 21+pts that year.

on top of this, they've got  Augsburg next week who always gives them fits

on a good note, the WB offense also put up 500 yards and some points with no turnovers.    The Defense is going to have to improve real fast if they want a chance to repeat this year.  Fortunately for fans like myself, Coach Willis will (should) get that squared up.
