Thought for the day:

What do I think of the team's execution?  I'm in favor of it!

Charlie Kohawk

Kohawk defense is as good as advertised. Offensive production was a pleasant surprise. Nice to finish on the winning side of a close one for a change.
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

Outside the Crate

There was so much offense in today's St. Norbert/Wartburg game that it's hard to judge the quality of either defense.  Perhaps we just had two very strong offensive efforts.  Time will tell.

Having said that, Wartburg has some work to do.  St. Norbert will be in the money in the Miidwest.  They have a very nice team again, and they'll give Monmouth a solid run for the prize.

Fun game to watch.  Great crowd, including a ton of Wartburg people.  Glad I made the trip despite the loss by Wartburg.

A fun day in Grinnell, Iowa...

Met DF2k4 and CaliRam...had a great time watching the Rams do some things right.

With a Freshman starting at QB, it was nervous time as he fumbled his first exchange with the RB.  He threw a pick in the end zone when maybe he could have ran it in but that was it...so on the whole he came out ahead on the positive/negative scale.  Threw 2 TD's, something that didn't happen all last year.  Threw balls away rather than forcing some in.  And the kid ran with abandon.  At 165?!  He needs to be judicious with that.

As to the Kicking Game Poll...Brian King proved my preference for a stud punter...3 punts inside the 20 and one dies on the 3.  He kept Grinnell pushed back for most of the day.  Plus he plays a mean ILB with several vicious hits inside.

Our kicker missed 2 PAT's.

On the whole the punter was of more value.

Defense played fairly well +1 on TO's with Don Bladt coming up huge.  The D Gave up one long drive and one long TD on a blown call.

Offensively...we need some work...missed blocks...some cramping slowed us....but the highlights were a 97 yard drive, sustaining some drives that gave the D a chance to rest.   This game could have been 35-14 or more...on the other hand it could have easily been lost...but this year's Rams had more heart than last year's it seemed to me.

You can't leave me....all the plants will die.

Old Dutch

A few observations from a little statistics browsing:

Jarred Lackey's first two touches go 108 yards - and the Dutch rush for 374 yds - cool
UD tallies 600 yds vs Rockford Reagents - maybe the NATHC (conference of both Lakeland and Rockford) isn't such stiff competition all around.
BV held to 17 yds rushing - ouch
SNC and Warty go 1033 offensive yards - pretty disappointing for the Knight D, and for Yordi at only 14 of 26 passing.
Coe QB Boyle goes 25 of 32 - nice, but at 8 y/rec. looks like the KoHawks are playing dink and dump, still  the best win for IIAC on the day!
Simpson D gives up 450 yds, and Unkrich and Shelton both leave the game in the third, we hope those are minor injuries
No running game at Luther either, only 26 yds, and the D surrenders 450 also
Loras 29 of 49 attempts for 320 yds - only 58 yds in running game - ouch again?
Congrats to the RAMS, frosh QB steps in for an admirable job - 28 attempts only 1 pick, 190 yds passing and  Burdick goes 125 rushing

you know they've been banging on that door, especially against the Dutch last year.  If this Frosh QB improves through the year there's a good chance they'll get one.  I think Grinnell has been improving so this is a good win for them.

Say what happened to Bush ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Transferred to Morehouse College...D2 in Atlanta.  I would expect he redshirts this year unless they switch his position.  They got an established QB there.

In reading the home page of D3football.com I noticed two upsets in the top 10. (No. 4 North Central and No. 8 Willamette) I tried locating the updated top 25 and could not locate. Anybody have any info?

Thanks! I seen the 25 link. Looks like I was just jumping the gun on getting on there too early.  :o

No disrespect to Pat and his team for the top 25 but don't count on the top 25 till later on Sunday.  With that poll it not up till he gets all the votes and sometimes the coaches don't get it in right away.  It will be up this evening sometime.  Pat does a great job but he can only do as good of job as the voters do.  AZDutchman you are like I was 4-5 years ago.  When you learn the ropes it will become more clear.  This site is the best for D3 bar none.

Looking at the summary of the Wartburg game.  Some questions for the Knight backers.  1st and goal from the 6 and four running plays in OT.  With Yordi at QB and him being touted for preseason MVP (and deservedly so) why not 1 pass attempt?  Just curious as to your thoughts.

Yeah when you compare the time the d3 poll is out compared to the major college polls, it's an even more impressive effort. It's not like these guys have an AP-like staff.
