Went to the Loras-Monmouth game.  Monmouth is definitely the real deal.  However, I have never been so offended listening to opposing fans!  There were a group of students and former players standing near the visitor stands being overboard obnoxious.  They were even yelling ethnic slurs toward McGrew on the sideline, who is a student assistant this year.  Never been more proud to be an Iowa Conference fan!!! It may get heated, but I've never heard anything like this before!
We have a team/fans out here like that. The only thing is, it's a high school team. I think it probably originated in Pop Warner football/ grade school. What they dont realize is that there making themselves look like fools. It's aggrevating and hard to tune out.

DutchFan2004,
Hopefully it wont take me 4-5 years to figure out. What I have figured out is that this one of the most respectful and enjoyable boards to be on. To add to what I had to say about some high school teams/fans, we have a popular board for high school here. I still go on it, having a son playing high school ball. There's a lot of people and statements that get removed from that site, due to disrespect (that's the best word I could come up with).
I appreciaete the patience and the answering of my questions on this site! ;D ;D

Spending the weekend in Rochester with my recovering Mother in law, and just catching up on the Wartburg game. I think this is 4 years in a row now that Wartburg won't finish undefeated in the non conference, maybe 4 out of 5, and things have worked out alright conference-wise for the Knights. Not too worried at this point, and won't be unless we are sitting 0-3.
To be honest I'm still pretty excited about Friday night.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Thanks! I seen the 25 link. Looks like I was just jumping the gun on getting on there too early.  :o

No disrespect to Pat and his team for the top 25 but don't count on the top 25 till later on Sunday.  With that poll it not up till he gets all the votes and sometimes the coaches don't get it in right away.  It will be up this evening sometime.  Pat does a great job but he can only do as good of job as the voters do.  AZDutchman you are like I was 4-5 years ago.  When you learn the ropes it will become more clear.  This site is the best for D3 bar none.

I would say, too, especially on Labor Day weekend the poll is later. I ask for ballots by 3 p.m. ET but I think that's happened once or so per season.

Also, too, we have at least one coach voting on the panel that had a long trip this weekend, so we may be waiting for his ballot.

A few observations from a little statistics browsing:

Jarred Lackey's first two touches go 108 yards - and the Dutch rush for 374 yds - cool
UD tallies 600 yds vs Rockford Reagents - maybe the NATHC (conference of both Lakeland and Rockford) isn't such stiff competition all around.
BV held to 17 yds rushing - ouch
SNC and Warty go 1033 offensive yards - pretty disappointing for the Knight D, and for Yordi at only 14 of 26 passing.
Coe QB Boyle goes 25 of 32 - nice, but at 8 y/rec. looks like the KoHawks are playing dink and dump, still  the best win for IIAC on the day!
Simpson D gives up 450 yds, and Unkrich and Shelton both leave the game in the third, we hope those are minor injuries
No running game at Luther either, only 26 yds, and the D surrenders 450 also
Loras 29 of 49 attempts for 320 yds - only 58 yds in running game - ouch again?
Congrats to the RAMS, frosh QB steps in for an admirable job - 28 attempts only 1 pick, 190 yds passing and  Burdick goes 125 rushing

upon further review, 4 straight 200 yard games for Yordi is nothing to be disappointed in, 14 of 26 is above 50%, I hadn't had my coffee that early this morning.  BUT SNC's qb went 28 of 37 for 314 which is closer to the # of attempts I was expecting from the Knights passing game.

So, with week one in the books, who about some opinions from the board;

Most impressive Win?
Most disappointing Loss?
Biggest surprise from IIAC team?
Most impressive individual performances?

I'll go first
Coe knocked off what is typically a very tough opponent, moves them up the ladder a bit in my book
Disappointed in Wartburg's loss, but they are rebuilding and against a playoff caliber team, I'm more disappointed in the Norse, just thought they would be better than a 30-13 loss to a mid-MIAC team.
In the RED, 374 yards rushing form the team that barely average 100 oper game last year!!  Congrats Dutch!
How about Andrew Burdick for the Rams 190 passing and 128 rushing as a freshman.

Another long trip home from Northfield. The good news is that the Norse are really good at blocking kicks. The bad news is that most the opponents kicks are extra points.

Congrats to Coe for a good win for the IIAC and to Central, Cornell and Dubuque for taking care of business.

I'll go along with your answers. Some pretty impressive numbers put up by some individuals from UD and Central, but I'll go with the young QB from Cornell.

-Coe over a solid Augustana team...although the were down last year and dont run the wing t like they used to, the Augie of old may be lost forever, we will see how this stacks up as the year continues.
Most disappointing Loss?
-Gotta be Wartburg, preseason conference favorites against a likely playoff opponent if they would win the IIAC and lose. Lack of defense surprises me from a perenially strong defensive team, it is early though.
Biggest surprise from IIAC team?
-Hmmm Luther getting walloped by the Oles, Wartburg losing...not sure here.
Most impressive individual performances?
-Gonna be a homer and go for Centrals running game, specifically Lackey, first 2 carries for 108, first time at RB in his career. The QB from Cornell also had a nice game!

I will go with a tie.  Coe gets a HOME win against a traditionally tough opponant.  Cornell gets a road win against a team they lost at home to last season.  And broke an 18 game losing streak as well.

Wartburg losing in OT after giving up a TD as time expired.  Coming a week before the Knights annual tough game against Augsburg has to come as a dissapointment to the defending conference champs.  I think the Knight offense will be fine.  The Knight defense needs to step up now.  I suspect they will as the season progresses.

Sounds like a homer pick.  But with only 4 IIAC teams winning.  I liked Dubuque puting a 60-7 score up on Rockford.  New coaching staff and only 24 returning players for the Spartans.  Even if Rockford isn't much of a team, 600 yards total offense and under 200 yards given up by the defense is a pretty good win.

Another homer pick.  Mr. Spaulding at UD rushes for 158 yards on only 12 carries and scores 3 touchdowns.  Colton Hansen...12-17-1 isn't all that impressive...but, 240 yards passing on only 12 completions with 2 touchdown passes and 1 touchdown rushing is kinda sorta impressive.

Honorable mention goes to Alex Macey - 2 receptions for 41 yards and 1 TD.  Always a good idea to score a TD when your parents and GRANDPARENTS travel over 1,000 miles to see you play in person...also good to get a story of you written up in the paper as well ;D

Purple Heys

Add Don Bladt's 3 picks with a TD.  I believe that puts him among the national leaders.

BTW - I asked him to score me a touchdown last week...he said OK.

I asked Burdick if he was ready...he told me he was going to put on a show...all things considered, he did.

Cornell's clairvoyance training is paying off.   :D

To elaborate a bit on the Luther-St. Olaf game:

I wasn't surprised by the anemic offense of the Norse. They are young, with only one senior making the travel squad in the O-Line, and a lack of explosive players at the skilled positions. The Oles returned everyone from a good defense last year and there will be a lot of teams that struggle to score points on them.
I was disappointed with how uninspired they played throughout the game. The defense was disappointing on every level, particularly in the secondary, which was supposed to be their strength. To be fair, they didn't put any pressure on the Ole QB's, but the only passes that were not completed were either drops or flat out missed open targets. If you are going to be a poor tackling team, you should make it a point to get more than one defender around the ball. That improves your odds.

Purple Heys

It was a win...we have lot's to clean up, but any win you walk away from is a good win at Cornell.  We are not picky.   8)

On the other hand I believe we kept some arrows in the quiver with respect to game plan so that was good too.  But like I said, we need work.  I thought our freshman corners availed themselves well too.  It was great to see our defense bow up several time during the game especially on a 4th and 1 QB sneak in which the Serbian Sackmeister willed himself to hold off the guard and center doubleteam to stuff the play for no gain.  In my 4 years this is the most aggressive defensive play by someone not named Gus at Cornell that I have seen...and it was more than just a couple of guys.

BTW - I got a glimpse as to how the other half lives with DF2k4 giving the Central score updates.

At one point I guess it was 40-3 and then some time later he said Lakeland made a "comeback" as Central won 40-17.   So I guess the Dutch "squeaked" this one out.    :)

I'm glad to see Coe win (  :o ), disappointed that BV and Wartburg lost from a conference prestige viewpoint.  I didn't see Simpson or Loras coming out on top though that would have been nice to see too.

I'll be posting more after we get back to San Diego tonight...

I like #18 Breitbach for Coe. Did an nice job in the secondary. Deja Vu.

I liked the "Tinker Boys" on Offense...that is Coach Thurness' nickname for them.

I think Boyle has what it takes to  be an effective IIAC quarterback, and Hammes is solid.  Plenty of targets for Boyle to hit.

Great game Kohawks!
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Who is the Coach Thurness that you refer to?  Back when I was teaching at UD, there was a Thurness (Bob I think was his first name) on the Spartan coaching staff ... and he left UD for a job at Coe.  Could it be the same guy?
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀
