Heys, thanks for the carne asada. It hit the spot tonight. Dutchfan, it was nice meeting you this weekend. Late congrats to Cornell players and staff. I thought they did a great job of fighting for an entire game. There were mistakes made throughout the game but I believe that they were all coachable mistakes. That freshman QB reminds me of Chris Lovely. What needs to happen now is work in the film room and work at practice to correct mistakes that were made and continue to improve. There have been a couple of 2-0 preseason years and then the big zero in the IIAC win column. I'm not gonna be like ShowMe and call the Rams world-beaters but I think that they have a chance to compete this year and win some games. I'm a little jealous that McDonald and Burdick get to run behind that bigger O-line. I wouldn't mind having those big boys blocking a few years ago. I think Cornell is moving in the right direction. I know it's early but I'm still optimistic while remaining a realist. Good luck this week and continue to work hard.

Thought for the day:

We have to be realistic. If we don't win, life will continue.

A few observations from a little statistics browsing:
... No running game at Luther, only 26 yds, while the D surrendered 450

Quote from: Exerpt from Wisconsin Lutheran Preseaon Write-up
DEFENSE  - The Warriors finished third in the NAC in total defense, allowing 315.2 yards per game, and second in the conference in rushing defense, giving up just 118.1 yards per game on the ground last season. "Our veteran defense is going to make it very difficult for opponents to run the ball against us," says Coach Miller.

Heys, thanks for the carne asada. It hit the spot tonight.

I'm glad you liked it.   :)

I should be back out later this month and  I will try to arrange to bring more.

Thanks for coming out and supporting Jr. and the Rams.

The In-laws really loved the campus...they have a pretty good frame of reference having lived in Claremont Colleges (Pomona-Pitzer-Claremont-Harvey Mudd-Scripps).

They too, were not expecting the hills and the charm of the campus.  The article on Jr. in the CR-G was a nice thing for them to see...they already had 3 copies for us when we came down to breakfast...

We drove them around and they saw Coe and of course, Grinnell.

The cinnamon rolls at Perkins were a highlight.  We took Jr. and a couple of buddies to Genghis Grill...we enjoyed it and the boys got a good pregame meal.

We had a nice tailgate opportunity at Grinnell...their facilities, when all is said and done, will be very nice.  I met a few of the parents of Jr.s teammates...all great folks.  I look forward to a Home tailgate event.

We also walked on the nearest "beach" at Palisades Kepler State Park.  They had a nice time.

Regarding Cornell's O-Line...some big hosses.  And they seem to really enjoy the work.  I believe several stayed and worked out over the summer together while other did work at home.

They were big, young, and at times soft last year.  This year they are a year older and definitely not soft...they've even developed a bit of a mean streak.

The biggest of them hasn't cracked the starting lineup, but gets plenty of snaps.  On one play he moved the pile about 5 yards forward.

The good thing is the core leadership guys on the O-line are juniors Owen, Rachal, and Hull) with 3 big sophs (Whirry, North, and The Schwarz)...I look for this group to continue to improve and with it the Rams' chances for an IIAC win improve as well.

What I saw last Saturday was consistent ball control and forwar progress.  Our offense gave the defense a chance to get some rest.  The defense responded by getting Grinnell back off the field.

2 penalties...procedure on our RB and a hold.  I'll take that for a 1st game.  Played with some discipline.

T.O.P was 37:33 to 22:27  with 79 offensive plays it was the offense getting tired.

One of the game officials collapsed with an apparent heart attack...was a scary moment.  Ambulance onsite plus Cornell and Grinnell training staff were right there to help the fellow...later reported to be doing fine.

We are glad to hear you're doing well out there and get well soon!

Reality check:  It was only Grinnell

We need to step it up against Carleton.

Way to go Cornell Football   :) :) :)

In today's CR Gazette

Rams help block flood
By Jeff Johnson - The Gazette

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cornell College football team helped. It just took awhile to find someplace to do it.

Matt Dillon gathered 36 of his players and drove to Marion last Thursday after the coach heard a call for volunteers to help sandbag in neighborhoods bordering flooded Indian Creek. Once the group got to the area, it was told there was nothing for them to do.

Someone finally suggested the team head toward 40th St. Dr. SE in Cedar Rapids, behind the Outback Steakhouse on 1st Ave.

That part of Indian Creek also had flooded. "They had the sand and everything all there," Dillon said. "So we filled sandbags and got them lined up for the people to use. I think we were there about three hours." Dillon said he had little trouble convincing most of his players to volunteer their assistance.

"That's kind of what the Cornell community is about," he said. "It's not just about your education or playing football.

It's about being willing to help other people when they need it. "The guys really stepped up to the plate. Hopefully we did some good."

Players of the Week Sept. 6, 2009

Offense: Brad Boyle, Coe College, New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska
Boyle, a sophomore quarterback, was 25-for-32 for 207 yards and a touchdown in Coe's 9-7 season-opening win over Augustana (Ill.). The 25 completions rank fifth-most in school history for a single game. He also tallied a game-high 16 carries for 16 yards.

Defense: Don Bladt, Cornell College, Shelby, Iowa/AHST
Bladt, a senior defensive back, intercepted three passes in leading the Rams to a 28-21 season-opening victory at Grinnell, snapping Cornell's 18-game losing streak. Bladt had a 60-yard touchdown and picked off another pass in the end zone for a touchback in the fourth quarter. His first pick of the day, which he returned 30 yards, set up Cornell's first touchdown in the second quarter. Bladt also tied for the team lead with seven tackles in addition to handling regular kickoff duties.

Special Teams: Elliot Rausa, Coe College, Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus Catholic
Rausa, a junior kicker, was 1-for-2 on field goal attempts, making a 26-yarder with 11:52 to play in the game to provide what ended up being the winning points. He also assisted on a tackle.

8 of the 9 games were on the road...and during Labor Day weekend.  The 1 game that was @ an IIAC school brought in over 2,900.  The 3 games that brought in 500 or fewer...2 NAC conference teams and Grinnell.  Not schools or conferences known for their football.  3,600 at St. Olaf, 2,200 at St. Norby aren't bad.  Seeing 1,821 in the 10,000 seat stadium at Platteville might be a little odd.  Overall, not too bad.  Hopefully we have sunny skies and similar temps this coming weekend.  I think attendance will be nice.  We will be in Dubuque cheering on the Spartans.

Interesting to note.  The UD announcer mentioned there were a lot of people at Rockford wearing Spartan Blue.  Maybe all those new kids from Wisconsin and Illinois are starting to pay off with butts in the seats!!!
